Transmigrating into a Wasteland Cannon Fodder Slag A [GL Yuri] - Chapter 32.1
The two of them returned to the inn with the toolbox, and as soon as they arrived, Hei Ye came to greet them.
“Did you guys also feel that something was off about this village?” he asked.
Yan An nodded. “Did you find anything?”
“No,” Hei Ye shook his head. “But I was on the roof, and I looked through my binoculars, and there was nothing. It’s just too strange.”
Fang Qiang, hearing their conversation, got a scared look on his face. “You two are the ones who insisted on stopping here. If something happens, you have to protect us.”
Yan An shot him a cold look. “You can leave now.”
The RV was in no condition to be driven, and they would have to face countless zombies on the road. They needed to reinforce it first.
Fang Qiang was furious, but he just turned around and sat back on his chair. “I’ll give you half an hour. If you can’t get it ready by then, we’re leaving.” He added under his breath, “Women are such a hassle. What’s the point of dragging this out?”
Gu Xia was not about to let this slide. “Shut up,” she said, taking out her gun and firing a shot at the chair Fang Qiang was sitting on. The chair leg broke, and he landed on the ground with a thump.
“Boss!” his lackeys yelled, rushing to help him up.
Fang Qiang, who never thought Gu Xia would actually shoot, was first terrified, then embarrassed in front of his crew. He shrugged off their arms. “Gu Xia, you’re crazy! Shooting me like that. You want me to kill you?”
Yan An’s eyes narrowed. She raised her sniper rifle and aimed at Fang Qiang’s arm. Her first bullet was corroded by his ability, then the second and third… seven bullets in a row were eaten away. But how much of an energy reserve could Fang Qiang have? Yan An kept firing. His lackeys were about to rush forward, but when one of them was hit in the leg and fell to the ground, no one else dared to move. They all scattered, looking for cover inside the inn.
With his men hiding, Fang Qiang yelled, “I’m sorry, Grandma Yan An! I shouldn’t have threatened Grandma Gu Xia! I was wrong!”
Yan An stopped firing. Fang Qiang let out a sigh of relief, but she quickly reloaded her rifle and aimed at his leg, firing again. Without his corrosive ability, could he dodge a bullet? The bullet hit his thigh, and he collapsed, wailing in pain.
Her high-precision sniper rifle could fire twelve shots a second. There was no way Fang Qiang could have blocked them. Could his Class-C corrosive ability even handle that? Yan An was only aiming for his legs. If she had aimed at his chest, he would have been dead already.
She spoke in a chilling voice, her eyes fixed on Fang Qiang. “If I kill you, I won’t need to reinforce the car.” They wouldn’t have to reinforce a car if they took his armored one, would they? He had called them slow. If she had stolen the car, they could have left a long time ago.
Yan An’s expression was grim. She had been putting up with Fang Qiang for a long time. “You talk to my girlfriend like that? Do you think I’m dead?” She hadn’t bothered with him before because they were in the middle of a mission and needed to cooperate, but if this was his attitude, they might as well break up the team. The only people she originally wanted were Hei Ye and Xiao Hua. Fang Qiang and his crew were just an extra bonus, and only because of his Class-C corrosive ability.
She had been kind enough not to just steal the car. Fang Qiang was speechless, and Hei Ye walked over. “It’s getting late. We need to hurry up and get the car ready.”
After a moment of silence, Yan An spoke to Fang Qiang in a cold voice. “You guys can leave now. You don’t have to wait for us.”
“I’ll go,” Fang Qiang said, “but only if Xiao Hua heals me first.”
Xiao Hua was Hei Ye’s younger sister. It was her decision whether to heal him or not. Even though they were on good terms with her, they couldn’t just order her around.
Yan An ignored him. Gu Xia walked over to her and stroked her hair. “Don’t be angry.”
“Okay.” She wasn’t that angry. She just couldn’t stand him talking that way to Gu Xia. He had been so arrogant, acting as if they were afraid of him or needed him. She had just been keeping the peace, which only fed his unfounded ego.
Yan An walked to the RV and began to remove the broken glass. The glass had to be cleaned out before they could weld the iron plates and wire mesh.
“I’ll handle the cleanup. You get the modifications ready,” Hei Ye said, walking over with Xiao Hua in his arms. He then placed Xiao Hua in Gu Xia’s arms. “Gu Xia, would you mind looking after Xiao Hua?” He saw that Gu Xia, despite her frail appearance, was capable. When she shot the zombies, she was surprisingly reliable. Compared to Jiang Feng, Hei Ye felt he could trust Gu Xia more.
Gu Xia had also wanted to help, but seeing Xiao Hua in her arms and Fang Qiang glaring at them, she decided it was better to hold the little girl. Xiao Hua was looking curiously at a sling bag on Gu Xia’s shoulder. Inside was the cat Yan An had just rescued.
“Do you like it?” Gu Xia noticed the little girl’s gaze.
“Mmhmm,” Xiao Hua said with a cute nod.
“You can pet it.”
Xiao Hua hesitated for a moment, but she couldn’t resist the charm of the cat. She reached out and began to pet it. For the past month, all they had seen were zombies. They hadn’t seen any small animals at all. Although Xiao Hua was young, she had been through so much in the last month that her childish innocence was slowly fading away. It was an inevitable change. In the apocalypse, if a child didn’t want to die, they had to grow up fast.
Gu Xia smiled, watching the heartwarming scene. After petting the cat for a while, Xiao Hua looked up and asked, “Does it have a name?”
“Not yet. Do you want to name it?” Gu Xia was excited to see what the little girl would name the cat.
Xiao Hua thought for a moment. “How about… Little Black?”
Hei Ye sighed. “Doesn’t ‘Swallow’ sound better?”
Yan An scoffed. “A cat named Swallow? Are you serious?”
“Then what should we call it?” Xiao Hua was getting confused.
In the end, Yan An gave it a name. “Let’s call it Bai Ze.”
“Bai Ze has a tiger head, and tigers are also felines. Besides, there’s already a Big Black and a Little Black. Let’s call it Bai Ze, and its nickname will be Big White.”
Hei Ye looked defeated.
Gu Xia nodded. “Big White it is.”
“A black cat named Big White… Only you two could come up with that.” Hei Ye shook his head in exasperation and went back to work.
Not far away, Fang Qiang was glaring at them, his eyes darting to Xiao Hua in Gu Xia’s arms. He and his men had been shot in the leg and were only given basic bandages. If they left now, they wouldn’t be able to get treatment from Xiao Hua.
Those who were wounded wouldn’t be able to run far, and they certainly wouldn’t be able to face the hordes of zombies waiting for them.
In the end, Hei Ye couldn’t bring himself to abandon them. After he finished cleaning the glass shards, he let Xiao Hua heal their gunshot wounds. With her Class-A healing ability, Xiao Hua didn’t need to touch them. She just had to put her hands up, and her power healed their wounds. Yan An had used a sniper rifle, and the bullets had gone straight through their legs, which was good, as they didn’t have to dig them out.
With their legs healed, Fang Qiang and his crew settled down.
“What are you standing around for? Go help out,” Fang Qiang ordered his men, who immediately went to Yan An’s side to help cut and carry things. Yan An’s small generator came in handy for the welding and cutting.
Soon, Yan An had taken the tempered glass from the inn and was cutting it to size to install on the RV. She had to replace the front and back windows with glass, otherwise, the wind would be too much. With her skills, it didn’t take her long.
She left the side windows intact but welded metal plates over the broken ones, leaving small holes that could be plugged or used as gun ports. On the outside of every window, she also added a layer of wire mesh to prevent zombies from pounding on the glass. She then welded a drill bit, about as thick as an arm, to the center of each of the four wheels.
All of this took nearly an hour. The island was a two-hour drive from here, so it might have seemed unnecessary to spend an hour reinforcing the vehicle. However, from the videos she had seen, the road ahead especially the one leading to the island, was swarming with zombies.
It was a two-hour drive to the nearest pier, a twenty-minute boat ride to the island, and then another two-hour climb up the mountain to the military base. This was the fastest route to the safe zone, so it wasn’t a simple two-hour journey.
Of course, they didn’t have to take a boat. There was also a sea bridge, which would take thirty to forty minutes to cross by car. In the past, since the island was a scenic area and a military base, private cars were not allowed to drive up to it. Yan An was considering taking the sea bridge instead, as there were likely too many zombies at the pier, and there might not even be any boats.
With the RV now roughly reinforced, everyone boarded and prepared to leave. Huang Yunyun followed them quietly. She had also helped with the modifications, and it was obvious from the cold stares Fang Qiang gave her that she had made her choice. One that he didn’t like. Her choice meant that Gu Xia had not misjudged her.
Yan An looked at Huang Yunyun, who still looked terrified. She took a box of twenty bullets from her bag and tossed them to her. “Here, take these.”
Huang Yunyun looked at the bullets in her hand, unable to believe that Yan An would give them to her. She clutched the bullets tightly, her voice trembling. “Th-thank you.” For a regular person, a gun was a valuable tool for survival in the apocalypse.
Yan An didn’t say anything. She got up and opened the sunroof, letting the sunlight in to charge her generator. The generator was connected to a food processor, into which she placed clean rice, vegetables, sealed chicken br3ast, and a little salt. She then turned on the food processor.
Hei Ye was driving again, with Jiang Feng in the passenger seat. Gu Xia sat in the back holding Xiao Hua, and Huang Yunyun sat in the middle. With only six people, the RV felt much more spacious. Yan An’s tools were also in the car, as she couldn’t just put them in her space with so many people around. This freed up some room in her spatial storage.
She watched her porridge cook, waiting for it to be ready. The food processor was extremely useful, and with the solar-powered generator, they could have hot food at any time. They were about to face a major battle, and they needed to replenish their energy. Huang Yunyun offered to take care of the porridge, and Yan An agreed. She looked up at the sunroof, which was now covered with wire mesh, and walked to the back of the RV.
There were zombies following them, trying to grab onto the wire mesh, but the RV was too fast. The drill bits she had welded onto the four wheels were working perfectly, killing any zombies that got too close. The reinforced RV wasn’t as tough as an armored vehicle, but any zombie that got near was doomed. Unfortunately, they didn’t have enough time or materials, or Yan An could have made the RV even better. She thought she would have to modify a car for herself in the future. One that she could put in her space to use whenever she wanted.
Yan An leaned against Gu Xia’s shoulder, looking tired after spending almost an hour working on the mechanics.
“Want to take a nap?” Gu Xia offered, patting her lap.
“Okay,” Yan An said. She didn’t actually want to sleep; she just wanted to rest her eyes. She didn’t know what they would face next. That strange village still felt like a foggy mystery. Even though they were far away, she still felt uneasy. She couldn’t explain what was wrong. Her mind was a mess, and she started to doze off.
Hei Ye’s voice suddenly woke her up. “We’re about thirty to forty minutes from the pier. We should arrive around 3:30 p.m. if we don’t run into a large horde of zombies.”
“So, everyone, we need to decide now whether we’re taking the pier or the sea bridge.” He continued, “It’s likely that both the pier and the sea bridge will have a lot of zombies. Maybe even more than the expressway in Pingzhou City.”
