Unexpected (GL) - Chapter 2
Jinghai University, Girls’ Dormitory Room 211.
“Xie Jing, are you going to the club activity on Thursday?” Zhou Yan stuck her head halfway out from the bathroom and asked.
“No, my friend asked me to play a dungeon with them.”
Xie Jing replied without even looking up. She had a milk-flavored lollipop in her mouth and her fingers tapped away on the keyboard quickly. She rejected her roommate’s warm invitation without hesitation.
After speaking, she drove straight into the arena.
Xie Jing, 18 years old, Sagittarius, a first-year computer science student, 159 cm tall, a southerner studying in the north.
Xie Jing was an optimistic girl addicted to the internet. Her favorite things were playing games, listening to music, and reading novels. With such lazy hobbies, it was a miracle she even got into college—must be thanks to her ancestors’ blessings. But even after getting into college, she kept being lazy.
Her mom ran a company, and her dad was a doctor. Their biggest wish for her was to live a happy life. Since she was young, she never had to worry about food or clothes, and her only joy was gaming.
No matter what kind of game was out there, Xie Jing had probably tried it.
Her favorite game was Jianwang 3. Not because it was super fun, but because the people in it were very interesting. She had a good talent for gaming, so she genuinely enjoyed playing.
After finishing twenty victories for the week with her friends, Xie Jing logged off, grabbed her clothes, and rushed to the school’s big public bath. She planned to take a shower first and then head to night study.
When she first came to this school, Xie Jing wasn’t used to showering naked in front of so many people. For a long time, she went off-campus to bathe alone. But it was troublesome and ridiculously
expensive. After half a semester, she compromised for various reasons. After all, she was nearsighted and had astigmatism—she couldn’t see clearly even if someone stood naked right in front of her.
Xie Jing showered quickly and walked back to the dorm.
The school had a strict rule for freshmen: from Monday to Friday, they had to attend two periods of night study every evening. Xie Jing didn’t complain. During study hall, there were no teachers,
and students could play on their phones, so it wasn’t that bad.
But the good days didn’t last. Bad news hit suddenly.
A school leader discovered during inspection that most students were secretly using their phones. After that, the school strictly required everyone to hand in their phones before night study.
That rule was like a bomb thrown into a crowd. The whole class went into chaos, but no one dared disobey. Later, the class leader used class funds to buy a cloth pouch with numbered pockets—one for
each student ID. If someone didn’t hand in their phone, it was obvious.
From then on, those two hours of night study became the hardest time of the day for students.
At 8:30 p.m., Xie Jing absentmindedly picked at her fingers, feeling like every second dragged forever. Suddenly, her eyes met someone else’s.
Xie Jing wasn’t good with faces and didn’t recognize who it was, nor did she know their name. The person wore a face mask, revealing only a pale forehead and deep black eyes. The way they looked at
Xie Jing was a little strange.
She paused for two seconds, trying to figure out who it was.
“What are you spacing out for? It’s your turn.”
Zhou Yan nudged her elbow, signaling her to ‘play chess.’
Their dorm had three people, but one bed was empty. Besides Zhou Yan, Xie Jing’s other roommate was Chen Yuan. Unlike Xie Jing and Zhou Yan—who only studied sometimes—Chen Yuan loved studying. She
slept later than Xie Jing, who was addicted to games, and woke up before dawn. She practically lived in the library and study rooms, always sitting front and center in the classroom.
Someone like her naturally didn’t fit in with Xie Jing and Zhou Yan. But luckily, all three had decent personalities, so they got along without conflict.
After finishing two rounds of tic-tac-toe with Zhou Yan, Xie Jing finally made it through night study.
As usual, she returned to the dorm and planned to play a 25-man dungeon. Today was no different. As soon as she got back, she turned on her computer, logged in, and joined the team. Even though she
wasn’t leading, she still put on her headset and adjusted the microphone.
For some reason, she kept getting distracted during the dungeon. The image of those deep black eyes kept popping into her head.
She made a few mistakes, then quit the team and logged off quietly without asking for any rewards.
The dorm was quiet tonight. Zhou Yan had gone to bed early and had fully drawn her blackout curtains—no idea if she was asleep or not. Chen Yuan was still studying at the end of the hallway in the
dorm’s study room.
Xie Jing glanced at her roommate’s neatly arranged bed, yawned, and climbed up the ladder to her own.
The next second, she missed a step.
Luckily, she was holding on tight and didn’t fall.
Xie Jing looked back in shock at the bed across from hers, confused. While gaming earlier, she vaguely remembered Zhou Yan saying something—something about someone new moving into their dorm?
Who?
The bed on the other side of the hallway was covered with a black curtain. She couldn’t see inside. Xie Jing stared at the curtain for a while, then, still puzzled, crawled into her own bed.
She had just laid down when the dorm door creaked open.
Chen Yuan had finished studying and returned. Her bed was next to Xie Jing’s, while Zhou Yan’s bed was across the hallway. The bed across from Xie Jing’s, which used to be empty, was now occupied by
someone unknown.
