Unexpected (GL) - Chapter 3
At 8 a.m. the next day, on the second floor of the second cafeteria at Jinghai University.
“Did you hear? Our class has a new transfer student.” Zhou Yan leaned in close to Xie Jing’s ear and spoke mysteriously.
“Huh? How can someone transfer at this time?”
Normally, you can only switch majors after the first semester and passing the exams, right?
“I don’t know. Maybe she has connections,” Zhou Yan mumbled as she stuffed a thin-skinned, meat-filled wonton into her mouth. “That’s not important. What’s important is—do you know where she lives?”
Xie Jing suddenly thought of that bed from last night and said in surprise, “Don’t tell me it’s our dorm?”
“That’s right. She’s the one sleeping next to me.” Zhou Yan gave Xie Jing a thumbs up and continued, “She gets up really early and makes no noise at all. When I opened my eyes, she was already
gone.”
“Her schedule is just like Chen Yuan’s. Who leaves the dorm before 7 a.m. when class starts at 8:30?”
“What am I gonna do? I heard she’s a top student too. What if she’s hard to get along with? How am I supposed to keep slacking off in the dorm?” Zhou Yan said anxiously.
Xie Jing glanced at her while chewing a shiny steamed dumpling and thought: There’s someone here who slacks off even more than you. I’m not worried, why are you?
“It’s fine. Worst case, you just do what I do—play games, watch shows, wear headphones.” Xie Jing smiled.
“I don’t want to wear headphones. They hurt my ears. And the three of us were living just fine. Now suddenly there’s a stranger. Of course, it feels uncomfortable.”
Zhou Yan had heard a lot of gossip lately about dorm fights. Rumor had it someone from the neighboring department had to move out and rent because of personality clashes.
There were few girls in their computer science major. The dorms had never been full before. Now someone from another major suddenly moved in—what if she has a dominant personality?
What if she insists on lights out at 9:30 every night?
“Don’t overthink it. Maybe she’s not as hard to get along with as you imagine,” Xie Jing said.
“You didn’t see her yesterday. She’s super cold. I talked to her, and she just nodded and said ‘mm.’ She’s like Chen Yuan times a hundred! Just thinking about living with her for four years makes me
nervous…”
Xie Jing had almost finished eating. She put down her chopsticks and wiped her mouth with a napkin. “If that’s the case, how about I switch beds with you? You can sleep next to Chen Yuan instead?”
“Huh? Really? Xiao Jing, I love you! From now on, if you tell me to go east, I’ll never go west!” Zhou Yan looked so touched, she almost hugged and kissed Xie Jing.
“Ahem… that’s really not necessary…”
If Xie Jing hadn’t finished her breakfast, she definitely would’ve spit it out after hearing that.
After eating, they went back to the classroom. It was Thursday, and they only had classes in the morning. The afternoon was reserved for the school’s regular club activity time.
“Xiao Jing, are you really not coming to the club fair?” Zhou Yan held onto Xie Jing as if reluctant to part after their afternoon nap.
“Nope.”
Xie Jing opened an Excel sheet and glanced at it, then said firmly, “I still have to get my first win in the battleground and do several ten-player runs. The cooldown resets tomorrow!”
“But I did a tarot reading for you! If you go out today, you’ll definitely meet your true love!”
Zhou Yan decided to use her ultimate move.
Xie Jing: “…”
That excuse… was way too far-fetched.
“It’s true!! Just come with me! You can play the game later tonight. I’ll even help you with battlegrounds. I’m not great at PvE, but I can still handle PvP!”
Zhou Yan was clearly desperate for a companion to go out with. She hadn’t played an online game in ages.
“Forget it. Just spare your poor little lightweight laptop,” Xie Jing muttered.
What she didn’t say was that Zhou Yan’s PvP skills were just barely above trash tier.
“Um… so will you go?” Zhou Yan asked cautiously.
“Let’s go,” Xie Jing said.
She had really wanted to just stay in the dorm and play games. But seeing Zhou Yan’s hopeful eyes blinking at her, she changed her shoes and followed her out.
She wasn’t interested in that so-called “true love” Zhou Yan talked about. She just wanted to keep her company.
The club fair was held in an open-air area by the campus lake. Besides students and staff, even people from outside the school would often come to watch.
Xie Jing and Zhou Yan arrived early and were able to grab seats. Zhou Yan tossed two books onto a black marble bench to claim the spot, then pulled Xie Jing down to sit.
Xie Jing had applied to a few clubs to earn second classroom credits. She was fair-skinned, pretty, and carried herself well. Thanks to her experience as a guild leader in Jianwang 3, she had zero
social anxiety.
Though she was from the South, her Mandarin was perfect. She passed several club interviews.
But due to scheduling issues, she had to quit some. In the end, she kept only the skateboarding and broadcasting clubs.
The club fair usually had performances like singing, dancing, and skits. Xie Jing found it pretty interesting.
It was a Northern university, so there were lots of good-looking guys and girls. They danced beautifully—totally on a different level from a southern girl like her.
Especially the lead dancer—so stunning she could debut on the spot. Xie Jing felt the trip was worth it.
There were a few minutes of rest between acts. After the dance club finished and got off stage, people started making their way to the audience. Some were drinking water, others were replying to
messages on their phones.
Xie Jing saw a girl in flowing sleeves walk straight toward her and Zhou Yan.
“Are you Xie Jing?” the girl asked.
“Huh? You know me?”
Xie Jing stared at her face, trying to recognize her. But maybe because of the makeup, she couldn’t tell who she was.
The girl smiled, and the glitter under her eyes sparkled in the sunlight. “My name is Shen Xinghe.”
The moment she heard the name Shen Xinghe, Xie Jing’s eyes went wide.
Shen Xinghe!!!
Xie Jing looked at her slowly growing HP bar and suddenly got excited, hitting the keyboard like crazy. She had reduced damage and managed to counter-kill a few players who, like her, had just
entered the poison zone. Just when she thought she was about to die and her soul was about to return to her hometown, a deeper shade of green appeared on her character.
Xie Jing: “???”
No way—she thought she was definitely going to die. Her hands had already left the keyboard.
Staring closely at the invincibility buff on her character, Xie Jing suddenly noticed a purple figure slowly falling beside her.
System broadcast: MeowMeowMeowMeow killed Xinghe.
This Xinghe seemed to be from a neighboring class. Earlier, when Xie Jing shouted in a small group chat, “Anyone want to play PUBG?” and logged in, she had also posted a team-up request.
Unexpectedly, Xinghe silently joined the team.
At the time, Xie Jing saw she had healer gear and didn’t expect that Xinghe could also deal DPS this well—she had even made it to the final circle.
Just now, she gave Xie Jing the “Spring Mud” buff and helped her counter-kill several players. After that wave, Xie Jing had thought she was definitely dead. But unexpectedly, Xinghe was still holding onto a “South Wind” buff, and even though her own health was low, she still gave it to Xie Jing.
How could Xie Jing not be shocked by this!
So unfair! No DPS player could resist this!
Xie Jing’s slender fingers hovered above the keyboard. Her heart was pounding like a drum.
5… 4… 3… 2… 1…
The invincibility ended. The moment “South Wind” disappeared, Xie Jing rapidly pressed several keys, and the result screen suddenly popped up on the monitor.
First place!
They had won the game!
After exiting the PUBG map, Xie Jing sent a friend request to Xinghe.
But strangely, Xinghe didn’t accept right away. It wasn’t until Xie Jing sent a private message with a question mark that the system finally showed they had become mutual friends.
Xie Jing quickly typed and sent a message:
[Xinghe! You’re amazing. Let’s play together again sometime!]
