- Chapter 39 - Who Allowed You to Bully Her?
Friday was a holiday.
Most students at the school were boarders, and the area outside the campus was packed with waiting parents. However, some students chose not to go home and stayed in the dormitory instead.
Qin Nanxi was the only one in her dorm who hadn’t gone home. Wen Zhixu had originally planned to lure her off-campus to teach her a lesson, but now it seemed they could just find a spot without surveillance.
Neither Wen Zhixu nor Tang Mo had gone home either. Wen Zhixu had plans to carry out, while Tang Mo usually just followed her lead—if Wen Zhixu went home, she went home; if not, they stayed in the dorm together.
The reason? Their families were too strict.
“Nanxi!” Wen Zhixu leaned over the desk, stretching her upper body toward Qin Nanxi. “Let’s go out to eat together!”
The cafeteria was closed on weekends, and the staff had already left by Friday afternoon. So, boarding students who stayed had to eat out, with most opting for the malatang stall not far from the school gate.
Qin Nanxi hadn’t packed her bag. She didn’t plan to return to the dorm yet—her roommates were still there, and going back would only invite trouble. She’d wait until lights-out.
She continued flipping through the materials in front of her. “No, you go ahead.”
The day before, Qin Nanxi had told Wen Zhixu not to bring her meals anymore—she was fine now. But Wen Zhixu always found excuses to keep her around, then had the cafeteria staff deliver food to her.
Under those circumstances, Qin Nanxi couldn’t refuse.
She could easily turn down Wen Zhixu, but she still had to be polite to others.
Wen Zhixu pretended not to hear. “Let’s go downtown for some stir-fry! Tang Mo said there’s a new place that’s really good.”
Though both Wen Zhixu and Tang Mo were young ladies from wealthy families, their families had adopted a hands-off approach because of their outgoing personalities. They weren’t given too much money, but enough to get by.
If anything serious happened, their families would step in—otherwise, they handled things themselves.
“No need,” Qin Nanxi maintained her studying posture. “I brought bread. I need to study now. If you want to eat, you and Tang Mo can go ahead.”
“I don’t wanna~” Wen Zhixu pouted. “Tang Mo went out with her senior.”
“Achoo!” Tang Mo sneezed suddenly outside the school gate. She had originally planned to go downtown with Wen Zhixu for dinner, but Wen Zhixu said she wasn’t going out tonight, so she had no choice but to eat with her sister instead.
But her nose was itchy—she wasn’t even sick!
Still, she had helped Wen Zhixu arrange to meet those three people later. Around eight or nine, when it was dark, would be perfect. With fewer teachers on campus during the weekend, they wouldn’t even need to find a secluded spot—the sports field would do.
Qin Nanxi: “Wait until I finish this problem.”
Wen Zhixu straightened up, grinning. “Got it!”
“Wait!” Qin Nanxi suddenly turned her head, meeting Wen Zhixu’s gaze. “This meal… I’ll treat you!”
Wen Zhixu had already done more for her than expected, and she had saved up a little. Treating her to a meal would be a way to return the favor.
Wen Zhixu stared intently at Qin Nanxi before smiling. “Then let’s have wontons! I’m suddenly craving them!”
Qin Nanxi felt shy under the intensity of that gaze and averted her eyes slightly. “Didn’t you want stir-fry? Let’s just go for that.”
“If you want it, we’ll go…” Wen Zhixu leaned in again. “But I can’t let the host spend money and not even get what they like!”
Wen Zhixu was always like this—constantly leaning in close to her. Qin Nanxi had told her many times, but Wen Zhixu never listened. Every time she got this close, Qin Nanxi’s heart would race uncontrollably. Sometimes, she managed to keep her expression neutral, but the loud “thump-thump” of her heartbeat was impossible to hide.
Qin Nanxi’s face flushed slightly as she leaned back against the wall. “Go back to your seat first. We’ll just have stir-fry. I’ll take you to eat once I finish this.”
“Roger that!” Wen Zhixu raised her hand in a playful salute before flopping back into her seat. “Yes, ma’am!”
The sudden gesture made the math problems in front of Qin Nanxi dance like floating cubes. She tried to focus, but the tiny numbers only grew more unruly, eventually morphing into two girls embracing, kissing, and then—
Snap. Qin Nanxi shut her book and stood abruptly. “Let’s go eat.”
Wen Zhixu, who had just finished telling her mom she wouldn’t be home this weekend, jolted in surprise. “O-okay.”
The city wasn’t far from school, and a direct bus ran right outside the gates. “Is taking the bus okay?” Qin Nanxi asked.
Wen Zhixu nodded eagerly. “Of course! I love riding the bus.”
“Um…” Wen Zhixu hesitated, then sat back down and rummaged through her desk. “Do you like music? I have an MP3 player.”
She usually used it while jogging, preferring softer tunes, but she wasn’t sure what Qin Nanxi liked.
“Sure,” Qin Nanxi agreed. “I don’t mind, as long as it’s not too loud or chaotic.”
Smiling, Wen Zhixu rearranged her playlist, putting their most familiar song first—maybe they’d share the same thought, being so in sync.
The bus was nearly empty. Wen Zhixu led Qin Nanxi to the back, letting her take the window seat before handing her an earbud.
Her fingers brushed Qin Nanxi’s ear, and the reddening was unmistakable. Wen Zhixu smirked, then took the chance to pinch her earlobe. “Nanxi… is it hot? Should we open a window?”
The bus was already chilly—Wen Zhixu’s bare arms even had goosebumps. Qin Nanxi turned away, staring out the window. “No, it’s fine.”
Wen Zhixu really wanted Qin Nanxi to take off her blazer. The classroom had no AC, and sometimes she could see sweat beading on Qin Nanxi’s forehead. Why she never removed it was a mystery.
“What… song is this?” Qin Nanxi suddenly asked halfway through. She turned to Wen Zhixu, then added, “It’s really nice.”
“I’ll tell you later.” Wen Zhixu grinned, leaning closer to rest her head on Qin Nanxi’s shoulder. “I’m carsick. I need a nap.”
Qin Nanxi’s lips parted, but seeing Wen Zhixu’s eyes already closed, a faint smile lingering, she decided against speaking. Let her rest.
Then Wen Zhixu’s eyes fluttered open. “Do you feel bad for me?”
Qin Nanxi: “…”
“Get up.” Qin Nanxi shoved her away, annoyed. “You’re too heavy. My shoulder hurts.”
Wen Zhixu planted her hands on her hips. “No way! I work out every day—look how toned I am!”
“Then you’re both skinny and heavy,” Qin Nanxi lied through her teeth to avoid exposing herself.
Wen Zhixu pressed half her body against Qin Nanxi, her hand resting between Qin Nanxi’s thighs, and said, “But I’m a delicate girl.”
On the nearly empty bus, no one paid attention to what the two were whispering in the confined space. Taking advantage of the moment, Wen Zhixu lightly bit Qin Nanxi’s earlobe.
Qin Nanxi shuddered, her face instantly flushing crimson. She stammered in anger, “Wh-what are you doing?”
Wen Zhixu smoothed the hair by her ear. “Nanxi… your hair was messy. I didn’t have a free hand, so I had to use my mouth.”
Qin Nanxi turned her head to gaze out the window, then shut her eyes tightly, cutting off all interaction.
–
By the time they returned to school after dinner, it was already dark. Qin Nanxi went straight to the classroom to do her homework, while Wen Zhixu had other matters to attend to and parted ways with her early.
Before leaving, Wen Zhixu still tried to tease Qin Nanxi, but the latter remained unresponsive.
Wen Zhixu figured Qin Nanxi was still holding a grudge. Well, no choice—next time, she’d just take her home to meet her mom.
Tang Mo was already waiting for her in the dorm. As soon as Wen Zhixu arrived, she said, “I got them to meet you. They were thrilled when they heard it was you asking. They’re waiting for you on the field now.”
“Good.” Wen Zhixu set down her bag and changed into a fitted T-shirt. The loose clothes she’d worn for the date earlier weren’t ideal for fighting. “Stay out of it when the time comes. Just keep watch by the entrance for teachers.”
Tang Mo’s upbringing was stricter—one misstep, and she’d get an earful from three people. Unlike Wen Zhixu, who only had to endure her mother’s scolding.
“If you can’t handle them, just call for me,” Tang Mo said, pulling a whistle from her pocket. “Blow this, and I’ll come help.”
Wen Zhixu took it. “Let’s go. Time for payback.”
The school was nearly empty on the weekend. Qin Nanxi’s roommates were strolling on the field, with Sun Li—the leader of their trio and the one who disliked Qin Nanxi the most—at the center.
There was no particular reason, except that Qin Nanxi’s grades were too good.
Sun Li walked along the track, her gaze occasionally drifting toward the entrance. She had a crush on Wen Zhixu and couldn’t understand why Wen Zhixu had ever been interested in Qin Nanxi. Thankfully, they’d broken up.
“Li-jie, do you think Jiang Qingyue asked to meet you alone?” the short-haired girl beside her asked.
Sun Li smiled, feigning shyness. “Probably just wants to be friends.”
“Li-jie! She’s here!”
Bathed in the faint moonlight, Wen Zhixu strode forward, her hair tied up high. The fitted outfit accentuated her flawless figure, making her stand out even in the darkness.
Sun Li stopped, smoothing her hair before walking to the center of the field with her friends, waiting for Wen Zhixu to approach.
“Jiang Qingyue…” Sun Li greeted warmly as Wen Zhixu arrived. “I’m Sun Li. What did you want to talk to us about?”
Wen Zhixu set down her phone and whistle. “I heard you don’t get along with Qin Nanxi?”
Given that Wen Zhixu had publicly dumped Qin Nanxi not long ago, most assumed she despised her. So, they played along.
“Yeah!” the short-haired girl chimed in. “We can’t stand her fake, holier-than-thou act. Who knows how wild she really is in private—”
A sharp smack cut her off.
The surroundings instantly fell silent. The short-haired girl covered her mouth, tears welling in her eyes as she stared at Wen Zhixu in shock before asking, “You… what are you doing?”
Wen Zhixu flexed her wrist—it seemed the bit of sanda she’d learned as a child had finally come in handy. Gripping Sun Li’s chin, her entire expression burned with fury.
“Who gave you permission to bully her?”
