Wait, I Got in the Wrong Car (GL) - Chapter 43
Mo Ying had been startled by Yu Xuan and could not stop hiccuping. She curled into her seat, distracted and on edge, glancing nervously at the door again and again.
Her strange behavior soon drew the attention of the other three girls. Wanqi Tianxin followed her gaze several times, but all she saw was the door. “Xiao Yu’er, didn’t you say you went to see your family? That ended fast.”
Mo Ying patted her chest in lingering fear. “If I didn’t run, I’d have been beaten. When my Fourth Sister gets mad, even a great white shark backs off.”
Wu Si leaned in, curiosity flaring. “Your Second Sister, your brother, and your Third Brother are all stunning. Your Fourth Sister must be a beauty, too. But something’s weird. Your Second Brother is named Kong Rulan, your Third Brother is Ye Moli, and you’re Mo Ying. Don’t tell me your Fourth Sister has a completely different surname again?”
Mo Ying answered, “My Fourth Sister’s surname is Yu.”
Chen Ruiling raised four fingers. “Four people, four different surnames.”
Wu Si added, “Xiao Yu’er, your family is really unique. Are they all your biological siblings?”
Mo Ying blinked and nodded firmly. “We’re family. Of course they are.”
Wanqi Tianxin nudged Wu Si with her elbow. “So your Fourth Sister is even fiercer than a great white shark? If she sees us, will she swallow us whole?”
Mo Ying suddenly remembered that Wu Si was a fan of her Fourth Sister. She hesitated briefly, then rushed to defend Yu Xuan’s reputation. “Actually, my Fourth Sister is really nice most of the time. She just loses control when she’s really angry. She’s much gentler now.”
At least she no longer dragged people into the sea for a duel.
Often, Mo Ying believed the best solution was to run away.
The three exchanged amused glances. “Oh, the gentle Fourth Sister.”
…
Lou Anran noticed her little one pressing her ear to the door from time to time. Every five minutes, she would suddenly spring up from the couch to perform some strange maneuver, only to shake her head and return to Lou Anran’s lap.
“Baby, are you training your hearing?”
Mo Ying hushed her. “Quiet. I hear something.”
Faint footsteps echoed in the hallway along with girls’ cheerful voices. Since the competition started, more and more people had moved into the villa. The first and second floors were already full. To avoid trouble, Mo Ying always dimmed the lights in their room upon returning, creating a serene, shadowy space. When neither of them spoke, the world shrank down to the sound of their breathing. Everything outside felt distant and unreal.
Lou Anran reached out and scooped her into a full embrace. “What’s with you today, pressing your ear to the door like that? Practicing to be a wind-listener?”
Mo Ying was curious. “What does wind-listener mean?”
Lou Anran, as usual, touched her belly and was surprised by a bounce. “It means hearing things from far away. A few meters, hundreds of meters, even farther. Baby fish is more active than usual today.”
Mo Ying tensed. “Of course she is. She knows her Fourth Aunt is coming to beat up her mommy. She’s even more nervous than I am.”
Just as she was about to dash barefoot back to the door, Lou Anran grabbed her and looked confused. “Why would your Fourth Sister want to beat you? There must be a reason.”
Mo Ying puffed up her cheeks. “Not just me. You too.”
Lou Anran fell silent.
After hearing the full story of how she had ended up on Yu Xuan’s blacklist too, Lou Anran laughed helplessly. “It was just a misunderstanding. No need to be so angry. I think your Fourth Sister is reasonable. She won’t make things hard for you, and she certainly won’t trouble me. Don’t worry.”
Under Lou Anran’s gentle reassurance, Mo Ying slowly relaxed. She laid her head against Lou Anran’s stomach, then thought for a moment and said, “Lou Xiaohei, if my Fourth Sister shows up looking for you, it’s best not to see her. She’s terrifying when she’s mad.”
Lou Anran chuckled. She had sensed Yu Xuan’s stormy energy earlier that morning. “Alright. At her worst, will she eat me?”
Mo Ying shot upright and stared at her. “She can’t. Lou Xiaohei, you promised to raise baby fish with me. Are you planning to break your word?”
Lou Anran saw the fierce look in her eyes and quickly pulled her back into her arms, patting her shoulder gently. “Don’t be afraid. I’ll raise baby fish with you. Tomorrow I’ll have someone install a small camera outside our door. Then you can check the hallway anytime without having to creep up to the door. Just open your phone or the computer. Everything will be clear.”
Mo Ying was amazed. “You can do that?”
Lou Anran explained, “Once you debut, you’ll find it’s quite common. Sometimes you have to guard against people with bad intentions. But don’t worry. I’ll teach you slowly. I’ll protect you. I’ll even show you how to take apart basic surveillance devices and check for hidden cameras around us.”
Mo Ying looked up at her, completely entranced as she tapped away seriously on her phone. She hugged Lou Anran’s waist tightly and nuzzled her. “Lou Xiaohei, I’ll protect you, too. I’ll do my best to stop Fourth Sister from hitting you.”
Lou Anran almost laughed. But when she saw the earnest look in Mo Ying’s eyes, even a little heroic, her heart softened. She leaned down and kissed Mo Ying’s forehead. “Then I’ll thank you in advance, baby.”
After Mo Ying repeatedly emphasized how dangerous her Fourth Sister could be, Lou Anran was intercepted one early morning just outside the filming site.
Yu Xuan opened the passenger door directly. “Lou Anran, get in. I’m taking you to meet our expert doctor.”
“What?”
Lou Anran smiled and waved her phone. “Let me just inform my assistant about this schedule change so she doesn’t wonder where I’ve gone.”
Yu Xuan, who had driven herself, waited patiently for a minute. “Please.”
Lou Anran stepped up, then paused. “Since we’re seeing a doctor, how about I ask for time off and bring the little one along for a full checkup too?”
Yu Xuan narrowed her eyes. “I’ll take care of Xiao Wu. Are you trying to dodge meeting her doctor?”
Lou Anran had already guessed this was a trap. She got in without complaint. The car ride was silent. Eventually, Lou Anran spotted the deep blue coastline in the distance.
“Fourth Sister, you picked a lovely spot. But isn’t meeting guests by the sea a bit… intense? Some people don’t like water. Or swimming. I fell into the sea once as a child.”
Yu Xuan glanced at her. “I enjoy the sea, and so does Xiao Wu. If you dislike swimming or being in the water, then after the baby is born, I suggest you seriously reconsider whether this unexpected relationship should continue.”
Lou Anran thought she could hear the grind of Yu Xuan’s teeth as she said those last words. “Relationships are about two people working together. Only that way can you tell if you’re right for each other. Fourth Sister, have you ever been in love?”
Yu Xuan clenched her back teeth. “Have you not seen my tabloid scandals? What kind of stupid question is that?”
Lou Anran smiled faintly. “Then you should understand how rare mutual affection is. When I met Mo Ying, that was our fate. I only want a home that belongs to me. A home with Mo Ying and baby fish.”
Yu Xuan looked momentarily stunned. By the time they finished talking, the car had stopped by the shore. As they stepped out, their feet sank into wet sand. The ocean stretched out endlessly under the sun, dark and deep, as if hiding unseen forces.
“Lou Anran.”
“The view is beautiful. I’ll bring the little one next time. She would love this.”
Yu Xuan had no interest in small talk. Last time she had let the conversation wander, Lou Anran had completely derailed it. She had grown angrier just thinking about it after returning home. That frustration had led to this ambush.
She scanned the area. No one was around.
“Let’s not beat around the bush. That night, how exactly did you trick Xiao Wu into bed? I want an answer.”
Trick?
Lou Anran had expected this. She showed no surprise. “And what kind of answer do you want, Fourth Sister?”
Yu Xuan nodded at the ocean. “Simple. You jump in. Or I throw you in. Pick one.”
Lou Anran raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?”
Yu Xuan gave a faint smile. “That’s right. If you can swim back to shore, I’ll consider your wrongs toward Xiao Wu settled.”
Simple, brutal, and direct.
Lou Anran appreciated such straightforward problem-solving. “Alright.”
She shrugged off her coat and tossed it aside. Then she rolled up her sleeves and pants, looking as if she were going fishing. As she gazed at the calm sea, she hesitated. The quieter it was, the more ominous it felt.
Yu Xuan added, “If the water goes over your head and you panic, once Xiao Wu gives birth, you leave. No discussion.”
Lou Anran took a deep breath. Other people won girlfriends with gifts and sweet words. Hers involved jumping into the ocean. She would definitely have a serious talk with her little one later.
She stretched her legs and warmed up. “If I come back safely, does that mean you won’t stop me from being with Mo Ying?”
Yu Xuan sneered. “You think getting past me means you get to be with her?”
Lou Anran bounced in place. “This is just between us. It has nothing to do with anyone else.”
Yu Xuan hated how unfazed Lou Anran looked. As if nothing in the world could trouble her. “Fine. If you stay in the water for five minutes and I don’t have to dive in after you, I’ll back off.”
Lou Anran corrected her. “This isn’t just about dating. It’s about staying together forever. Don’t confuse the two.”
Yu Xuan snapped. “What difference is there? Stop playing word games. Get in.”
Lou Anran still wanted to argue, but the look on Yu Xuan’s face suggested she would get violent if pushed further. Barefoot, Lou Anran stepped into the sea. The deeper she walked, the colder the water became. Her white shirt clung to her chest, and something shimmered faintly like golden threads over her heart.
She did not notice. Her eyes were fixed on the distance ahead.
As the sea rose above her head, Yu Xuan snapped her fingers. From afar, something lurking in the water began to surge toward Lou Anran.
