Wait, I Got in the Wrong Car (GL) - Chapter 44
Lou Anran slowly slipped beneath the surface of the sea. Across the water, a massive shadow surged toward her. It was a colossal fish, measuring somewhere between three and five meters in length. In the shallow bay, the two collided directly. The sea churned violently around them, the pressure weighing against Lou Anran like invisible chains.
The great white shark swam with cheerful energy, its bloody jaws opening wide as if showing off. Twenty-six sharp upper teeth gleamed in a fierce grin, with bits of red flesh still stuck between them.
Damn it. She had known Yu Xuan would never let her simply soak in seawater and call it even.
Lou Anran’s scalp prickled. A chilling fear ran through her as she sensed the beast might swallow her whole. Instinctively, she began swimming back. Moments later, the rushing sound of waves grew deafening beside her.
“Yu—” Lou Anran choked violently just as the great white shark flipped its tail and slid past her. Its sleek body moved alongside hers and even slowed its pace to match hers.
If not for the sheer size, she might have mistaken it for a playful pet teasing its owner.
Startled and struggling to breathe, Lou Anran curled into herself, coughing and flailing. Seawater engulfed her completely. Even through the shifting liquid, she could see the silly-looking shark circling her, its massive jaws appearing to search for the best place to bite.
Seconds passed before Lou Anran realized the shark did not seem interested in eating her. Instead, it gently nudged her with its terrifying head. Each push guided her several meters closer to shore, where Yu Xuan stood with her arms crossed at the water’s edge.
Suspicious, Lou Anran decided to test a theory. She stopped swimming and held her breath, letting her body sink.
Something unexpected happened. The great white shark froze for a moment, then immediately used its thick body to push her upward, escorting her all the way back to the beach.
Lou Anran landed on the sand like a discarded doll, motionless.
Yu Xuan crouched beside her and quickly turned her over. After checking for breath and finding it faint, she said, “Lou Anran, wake up. You’re not seriously planning to die like this, are you?”
Lou Anran wanted desperately to respond, but her breath-holding skills were lacking. As Yu Xuan pressed on her chest to resuscitate her, the pressure made her chest ache. The mouthful of seawater she had held in finally burst out, spraying Yu Xuan’s face.
Yu Xuan blinked in silence.
Lou Anran widened her eyes in panic. “Cough, cough… Fourth Sister, the shark! Did you see a huge great white shark?”
The shark had already vanished. The sea surface was calm once again. It looked as if nothing had happened.
If she hadn’t faced that terrifying creature up close, Lou Anran might have believed it had all been a dream. Somehow, she was still alive.
Yu Xuan stiffly wiped the water off her face. “There was no great white shark. You probably drank too much seawater. If you really encountered one, it would have swallowed you whole.”
Lou Anran glanced at the ocean. The dimwitted shark might still be lurking below, though it had disappeared from view. She slumped back onto the sand and patted her chest. “That was terrifying. Absolutely terrifying. I’m lucky I know a little swimming.”
Yu Xuan had not expected Lou Anran to endure that long. Most people would have wet themselves at the first sight of Xiao Bai and screamed for help. Instead, Lou Anran had struggled all the way until Xiao Bai had to carry her to shore.
Yu Xuan had been waiting for Lou Anran to call for help. If she had, that would have given her the excuse to stop everything. Someone as timid as Lou Anran was not fit to be Xiao Wu’s girlfriend. If she fainted just from seeing Xiao Wu’s tail, what then?
Yet Lou Anran stayed silent through it all. Compared to Lou Annie, she seemed slightly more capable.
But then Yu Xuan remembered that Lou Anran had made Xiao Wu pregnant with a merbaby. Any brief admiration vanished. There was no way this woman deserved someone as pure and lovable as Xiao Wu.
Lou Anran stayed on the ground for a while before finally sitting up. A small smile touched her lips. “Fourth Sister, thank you for accepting us.”
Yu Xuan instinctively turned her face away. She wanted to deny it, but had already said too much. Taking it back now would seem petty. Under Lou Anran’s expectant gaze, she muttered, “Let’s wait until the merbaby is born. Maybe by then, I won’t even need to say anything. Xiao Wu might end things herself.”
Lou Anran took that as confirmation.
She stretched her limbs and began planning how to get their marriage certificate before the baby arrived. That way, there would be no past or future debates.
Both women climbed into the car with their own thoughts. Yu Xuan dropped her off at the filming site. “I hope Xiao Wu never hears about today.”
Lou Anran had expected that. She nodded. “Xiao Wu has been mentioning you a lot recently. Even baby fish is more active. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure she stays happy.”
Yu Xuan waved a hand. “Fine. But if you treat her poorly, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
Once Yu Xuan’s car was out of sight, Lou Anran’s expression shifted. She pulled out her phone. “Did you catch anything useful on camera?”
Chu Shu had been so stunned by the footage that she could barely speak. The great white shark, at least four meters long, had swum dangerously close to Lou Anran. During the recording, she nearly called emergency services.
Any normal person would have fainted. Still reeling in shock, she sat in front of the computer. “Boss, you’re really putting your life on the line for love.”
Lou Anran replied, “I didn’t think Yu Xuan would actually kill me. She just needed to let off steam. The shark was a surprise.”
Thankfully, Mo Ying had been behaving oddly for days, repeatedly warning her about great white sharks. Her Fourth Sister had a habit of feeding people to them.
And sure enough, one appeared.
Chu Shu forwarded the remote footage. “A surprise? That was terrifying.”
The video was filmed from a distance, but the resolution was crystal clear. The great white shark glided through the blue waves, swimming in a loop. As for Lou Anran…
She deleted the video at once. It was too humiliating.
When Mo Ying came home, she found Lou Anran wrapped in a blanket on the sofa. She rushed over and nearly knocked the laptop onto the floor. “Lou Xiaohei!”
She sniffed around Lou Anran and her damp hair like a search dog. “Did you go to the beach without me?”
Lou Anran opened her mouth to explain, but sneezed. Then another sneeze came, and another. Her head throbbed. “Baby, why would I go to the beach alone?”
Mo Ying narrowed her eyes. “But I smell seawater on you.”
Lou Anran quickly invented a story. “I went to eat seafood with a client. They accidentally poured seawater on me.”
Mo Ying had never eaten local seafood and didn’t know that it was usually not raised in real seawater. Her cheeks puffed in anger, her eyes wide. “Someone bullied you? I’ll beat them up.”
Lou Anran laughed at her seriousness. She was about to explain, but another round of sneezing cut her off. “Baby, you’re pregnant now. You can’t be getting into fights. These days, money can fix anything.”
Mo Ying tilted her head. “Did you hit them back?”
Lou Anran sneezed again. “Don’t worry. I won’t let anyone get the better of me. But tonight, I need to rest. I’m too tired.”
She crawled into bed. Mo Ying lay beside her for a while but woke later to an alarming heat radiating from Lou Anran.
“Lou Xiaohei. Lou Xiaohei.”
Lou Anran opened her eyes sluggishly and tried to lift her arm. Before she could, she slipped back into unconsciousness.
Mo Ying grew frantic. She leaned in and heard Lou Anran muttering. “Mom… Mom, don’t go.”
She shook her, but Lou Anran didn’t respond. For the first time, Mo Ying noticed how hot Lou Anran’s body had become. For someone with a cool, fish-like body, the heat was unbearable.
She wanted to call someone, but her phone had been taken away. She couldn’t use Lou Anran’s phone or computer.
She had no one to turn to.
Knock, knock, knock!
In the stillness of the night, the sound echoed throughout the villa.
Chen Ruiling woke up from the noise. At first, she thought it came from another room. Then she heard Mo Ying call her name softly.
“Ah Rui. Ah Rui.”
“What’s wrong, Xiao Yu’er?”
Mo Ying was sweating from panic. Without waiting, she pulled her into the room and closed the door. Then she dragged her to the bedroom. “Lou Xiaohei won’t wake up no matter what I do. Is she going to die?”
Chen Ruiling blinked.
She hadn’t seen Lou Anran look this peaceful in a long time. Seeing her like that left her frozen for a whole minute.
It was the middle of the night, and Lou Anran was in Mo Ying’s bed.
Chen Ruiling eventually stepped forward and touched her cheek. Her hand flinched.
“She has a fever.”
Mo Ying clutched her wrist tightly. “But she won’t wake up. Shouldn’t we take her to the hospital?”
Chen Ruiling sighed. “If you wake everyone now, how will you explain that she’s in your room?”
Mo Ying had not thought that far. “But she’s sick. She needs a doctor.”
Chen Ruiling paused. “It will be morning in two hours. If she wakes up, let her decide if she wants to go. Can you wait until then?”
Mo Ying looked at her. “Ah Rui, do you think she’ll wake up?”
Chen Ruiling searched the room but couldn’t find any medicine. “She will. I think I packed something for fevers. Stay here.”
Mo Ying lay beside Lou Anran again, gripping her hand tightly. Then she pressed her forehead gently to hers and whispered, “Lou Xiaohei, look, I even brought your ex here. You should be happy enough to wake up now.”
