Wait, I Got in the Wrong Car (GL) - Chapter 49
“Is it good?”
“Very good.” Mo Ying smacked her lips. The ice cream melted quickly, and its flavor faded just as fast. The only taste that remained on her lips and tongue was Lou Anran’s. It was unique. She mentioned it casually, as if it had always been a fact. “Lou Xiaohei, you taste even better.”
Lou Anran felt a sudden tightness in her chest. Her obsidian eyes darkened with a hint of danger as she noticed the smear of ice cream on the girl’s cheek.
She stepped forward, and the sunlight flared into her eyes, making her blink. In that moment, she realized that people all around them were staring. Their open handholding and kisses along the way had clearly drawn attention.
Lou Anran gently reached out and wiped the smear away. “Baby, if you keep trying to tempt me like this in public, we’ll have to finish this date in a hotel room.”
Mo Ying’s cheeks turned a deep shade of red. The corners of her eyes were still tinged pink from the earlier kiss, giving her the appearance of someone who had just cried. That only made her look more captivating. “Huh?”
Lou Anran suspected that this little heartless girl had no idea what she had meant. Without saying more, she pulled her along, their fingers tightly entwined. “There are plenty of rides here. Which one would you like to try first?”
Mo Ying quickly let go of her confusion. Amusement parks had only surfaced in her memories a few times. To her, they were magical and joyful places. A paradise that every couple should experience together. “Let’s do everything today.”
There were over a dozen attractions, including the drop tower, carousel, haunted house, and Ferris wheel. Even with an entire day from sunrise to sunset, it might not be enough to try them all.
Lou Anran rubbed her temples. “Baby, maybe just choose a few of your favorites first.”
Mo Ying raised her hand to shield her eyes from the bright sun and looked up. She saw something slicing through the clouds, twisting and turning as the sound of people screaming filled the air. Her eyes grew wide with excitement, and she caught just a glimpse of its tail. “What is that flying thing? It looks like so much fun.”
Lou Anran did not respond right away.
The roller coaster line was already packed. Even from a distance, the queue stretched out like a long dragon moving at a crawl. Mo Ying licked her sugar figurine with delight, then handed the other half of Sun Wukong to Lou Anran. “Wow, Lou Xiaohei, everyone is going on that one. It must be really fun.”
Lou Anran stared at the dense crowd ahead. Her temples began to pulse. The sound of wind mixed with high-pitched screaming stabbed at her ears. It was exciting, but also overwhelming. “Baby, look at all those people waiting. We might be in line for hours. How about we try” she glanced around and spotted a nearly empty area “the carousel? It looks nice.”
Mo Ying blinked and turned to where Lou Anran had pointed. The carousel, lavish in its design, shimmered with golden light under the sun. She took a bite of her sugar figurine and nodded. “Sure.”
They waited only a few minutes. When it was their turn, Mo Ying eagerly chose a large horse and climbed on. Lou Anran was left with a much smaller one, barely big enough for her. She sat down with a sigh, feeling like a kindergartener squeezed onto a tiny plastic stool. Her long legs had nowhere to rest.
As she glanced around, she realized they were surrounded by children, ranging in age from toddlers to early teens. The accompanying adults were mostly mothers and grandmothers.
Among the spinning wooden ponies, Mo Ying and Lou Anran stood out. When the music began, a young mother nearby noticed the two of them sharing bites of the sugar figurine. A little boy behind them stared so intently at the candy as it passed between them that drool threatened to spill from his mouth. The woman beside Lou Anran smiled at the sight of such a tall girl squeezed onto the small horse. “You sisters have such a lovely bond. Excuse me, where did you get that sugar figurine?”
Mo Ying bit off the last piece of the candy right in front of the child’s eyes and spoke with her mouth still full. “We’re not sisters. Lou Xiaohei is my little girlfriend.”
Lou Anran, “…..”
Even after they stepped off the carousel, Mo Ying still could not figure out why the woman had suddenly scooped up her child and left in such a rush. She looked genuinely puzzled. “Was it because I didn’t share with the baby?”
Lou Anran answered calmly. “Too much sugar is bad for children. Don’t worry about it.”
Mo Ying puffed up with pride. “I’m not a child anymore. Lou Xiaohei, I want to get another sugar figurine later. Not Sun Wukong this time. Let’s ask them to make a little mermaid.”
Just as she began heading back toward the roller coaster line, Lou Anran felt a sudden unease. She reached out and gently took her hand. “Baby, how about we do it now? Let’s make two. One of you and one of the baby fish.”
Mo Ying looked intrigued by the suggestion.
Noticing her hesitation, Lou Anran spoke more persuasively. “What if the vendor closes? We might miss the chance to get the Little Mermaid and baby fish. The roller coaster will still be there. Let’s make the sugar figurines first. Maybe the crowd will be smaller later and we will not even need to wait.”
Mo Ying had never dealt with these things before. She did not know that popular attractions always had steady waves of people. When one group finished, another would soon take their place. Some thrill-seekers even went back for another ride. “Alright, let’s make the sugar figurines first.”
The vendor was an elderly woman with hands as wrinkled as tree bark. Yet her fingers were nimble, almost magical. In no time, she shaped a lifelike little mermaid out of golden sugar. Mo Ying held it, admiring every detail, reluctant to take a bite. Then the old woman crafted the baby fish. It looked just like the mermaid but was smaller, rounder, and adorably chubby.
Lou Anran paid with her phone. Noticing Mo Ying staring at the two figures like she was making an impossible decision, she suggested, “Why not eat the baby fish first?”
Mo Ying instinctively hid the baby fish behind her back and glared at her. “No way.”
The baby fish was an exact replica of the mermaid, which Mo Ying believed was how her baby fish should look. Just like her. With a sparkling gold tail. That old woman’s skill had made them so vivid that they looked alive.
“Oh no.”
“Ahahaha, you’re awful! Who comes up with ideas like that?”
A rowdy group of young girls burst through the crowd. Lou Anran reached out to pull Mo Ying aside, but Mo Ying instinctively stepped back. One of the girls, too busy laughing and walking backward, bumped into her.
There was a soft cracking sound. The baby fish Mo Ying had been protecting shattered completely, falling from the stick in pieces.
Mo Ying turned around. The group was still laughing and pushing each other. The broken candy was crushed beneath several feet, reduced to shards too far gone to piece together.
Mo Ying stood frozen, then let out a cry. “My baby fish!”
“Yanyan, I think you hit someone.”
“So what? It’s not like I lost a limb. Besides, these limited edition sneakers I just bought got dirty. Do you know how much I paid for them?”
The girl who had crashed into Mo Ying sounded utterly unconcerned. She even looked annoyed at the sticky candy pieces stuck to her sole. After scraping them off on the ground, she turned around and found Lou Anran glaring darkly at her. The rest of her words died in her throat.
Mo Ying puffed up with anger. Her beautiful green eyes shimmered with flecks of gold.
The girls around the sneaker girl stared at Mo Ying, mesmerized. One pointed and whispered, “Wow, her eyes have golden light. So pretty.”
Mo Ying flinched. Her pupils widened, and she quickly buried herself in Lou Anran’s arms, trying to hide her strange eyes. “Lou Xiaohei, they stepped on my baby fish.”
Lou Anran gently patted the girl in her arms. “I’ll make her pay for ten of them.”
The girl who bumped into her immediately protested. “Why should I?”
Lou Anran’s face stayed dark. “Because you hit someone and didn’t even apologize. You stepped on their stuff and think you don’t owe anything? Do you want me to call your mother or would you prefer another solution?”
The girl hesitated. “Go ahead. Let’s see if she loves you more or me.”
Mo Ying stared at her with a strange expression. When she looked up, she caught sight of Lou Xiaohei’s tense jawline. It always tightened like that whenever she was upset.
“Lou Xiaohei.”
Lou Anran noticed a glint of gold flickering in the girl’s eyes. She had seen it before, though never quite this clearly. “What is it?”
Mo Ying said softly, “Don’t be mad.”
Lou Anran let out a low chuckle. “I would never get mad at a little brat.”
The group of girls nearby was stunned. Something about the exchange had caught their attention.
“Yanyan, do you know her?”
Yanyan folded her arms. “No. Why would I know her?”
“Yanyan, it’s just a piece of candy. Let’s pay for it.”
“Yeah, we were the ones who ran into her first.”
“Exactly.”
Lou Yanyan grew even more agitated. “I will not pay. Absolutely not. If anyone should be paying, it should be you. And she got my shoes dirty, too. I have not even asked you to cover the cleaning fee.”
Mo Ying looked at the white sneakers that had been stepped on. The overlapping footprints made it impossible to tell which marks belonged to whom. The shoes looked pitiful. She tried to recall what had happened, but she had been too distraught over her shattered baby fish. In a soft voice, she asked, “Did I step on them?”
“Of course you did,” Lou Yanyan snapped. “Are you trying to deny it now? Two women clinging to each other in public. You are disgusting.”
Lou Anran let out a cold laugh. “Lou Yanyan, you have picked up quite a few nasty tricks. Who taught you to twist things like that? When you bumped into her, your back was facing us. Baby, did you stomp on her with your heel?”
A timid voice came from behind Lou Yanyan. “I… I think I stepped on them. I am sorry, Yanyan.”
Lou Yanyan was left speechless.
Lou Anran pulled out her phone and tapped a few keys. “Pay or not. I want you to apologize to Mo Ying for what you just said and did.”
Mo Ying blinked. “Lou Xiaohei, you said you weren’t angry.”
Lou Anran paused. Her response was perfunctory. “I’m not angry. But if no one taught her manners, then someone else will have to do it for her.”
The call went through.
“Uncle Huang, just a small matter.”
“I’ll pay! I’ll pay!” Lou Yanyan only heard the beginning and rushed over like she had seen a ghost. She tried to cover Lou Anran’s phone. “I’m sorry. I apologize. I’m really sorry.”
Lou Anran raised the phone higher. The call was still ongoing. “Ten. Not one less.”
Lou Yanyan nodded repeatedly. “Ten. I’ll pay all ten. But don’t make that call.”
—
“Uncle Huang, I’ll visit Grandpa in a few days.”
“Alright, Miss. Do you need me to prepare anything in advance?”
“No. Just tell Grandpa I’ll be bringing someone with me.”
After the call ended, Lou Yanyan obediently handed over ten baby fish sugar figurines to Mo Ying. While the old woman sculpted them, Yanyan kept glancing at the two and muttered bitterly, “This is all because Grandpa dotes on you. Otherwise… hmph.”
Mo Ying found it fascinating. Lou Yanyan was obviously the rebellious type. Usually, kids like that were the hardest to deal with. But Lou Anran had handled her in just a few sentences. “Wow, Lou Xiaohei, you are amazing.”
Lou Anran, however, was deep in thought about bringing Mo Ying home. She did not want anything half-hearted or unclear. “Baby, come home with me next week to meet Grandpa.”
Mo Ying looked confused. She remembered the novel describing Lou Anran as someone who severed ties with her entire family. When she went mad, she had nearly wiped the Lou family out.
“Is he good to you?”
The one person in the Lou family who treated Lou Anran the best was not her father, Lou Siyuan. It was the old man of the Lou family. If he and Mo Ying’s grandfather Chen Jianyun had not insisted, refusing to let a mistress enter the house, then her custody and even her last name might have changed.
Perhaps out of guilt for the wrongs she endured growing up, Lou Anran had spent years living overseas with her grandfather. The old man had always cared for her deeply. Despite only speaking a few times each year, he never failed to check in on her. Among all the grandchildren, he had a clear soft spot for her. It was as if the passing years and distance had never strained their bond.
Still, Lou Anran remembered fearing him as a child. Whenever the old man sat at the head of the table with a sharp gaze, she would freeze like she had fallen into an ice cellar.
Maybe she had just been too young back then. After everything she had seen and experienced over the years, that kind of elder’s authority no longer held power over her. After spending time with him again, she had found him rather endearing.
When Mo Ying asked so suddenly, Lou Anran was caught off guard. Many old memories came rushing back. “Grandpa will like you.”
Mo Ying smiled sweetly. “If he’s good to you, I’ll like him too.”
The ten sugar figurines were quickly completed. All of them were shaped like baby fish. Lou Yanyan spoke with a strange tone. “I already did what you asked. Don’t go spreading rumors about me. Otherwise… hmph.”
She walked away and grabbed a sugar figurine of her own, crunching into it furiously as she stomped off.
Lou Anran could not be bothered with a brat. She did not spare her even half a glance.
Mo Ying had trouble holding all the figurines. Lou Anran helped by taking six of them. Between the two of them, their hands were full. They looked at each other and laughed.
“We can’t ride the roller coaster like this. Baby, how about you eat the other nine?”
Mo Ying was too reluctant. As she looked at the smaller figurines, it was as if she were looking at the real baby fish. She lifted her head with a conflicted look just as a roller coaster flashed past them like a dragon dancing in the sky.
“Lou Xiaohei, how about we come back for another date tomorrow?”
Lou Anran’s lips twitched slightly. “Let’s head home and store these first.”
Mo Ying looked alarmed. “We can’t eat them.”
Lou Anran nodded and secretly committed the chubby baby fish design to memory. Sugar figurines would not last long. They were far more fragile than other keepsakes.
…
The next day, a heavy downpour ruined their outdoor date plans and also dampened Mo Ying’s desire to ride the roller coaster.
Lou Anran saw her sitting quietly with her phone and secretly let out a sigh of relief.
“Lou Xiaohei, wow!” Mo Ying suddenly jumped up on the sofa, her eyes glowing with excitement. “I… I have five hundred thousand fans now!”
“What?”
“Lou Xiaohei, five hundred thousand!” Mo Ying proudly placed her hands on her hips, standing tall like a triumphant queen. Her smile was radiant. “So many people like listening to me sing. This is amazing.”
Lou Anran’s first thought was that Ni Xinyu must have bought a wave of fake followers online. Five hundred thousand? That seemed a bit too flashy.
Worried that the girl might get too excited and fall off the couch, she quickly moved over and wrapped her arms around her legs. As she peeked at her phone, she saw a verified big-name account had reposted a clip of Mo Ying sitting on the sofa watching a show.
The caption read, “Xiao Wu, charge ahead. Third Brother will always be your strongest support.”
The comments below were full of mystery:
LoveYouTenThousandYears: Little Sister-in-law, charge ahead. Cheering for you.
Ye Moli’s Main Wife: Wow. Their family’s genes are insane. Not only does she sing beautifully, but she’s gorgeous too. And she’s… she’s my husband’s real sister!
DiehardFanOfXiaoYu’er: Ahhh, I finally found you. Xiao Yu’er, charge ahead. The future is bright.
Second Brother: Haha, I placed my bet right. Xiao Yu’er is amazing.
PigAbove: Months later, and I still get to hear you sing. I feel so lucky.
Octopus: Ahhh, Goddess please look at me. I’m your livestream fan Octopus. I can’t believe you sang Su Bai’s song even better than he did. So impressive.
…
Comments like these were endless. Most called themselves Little Sister-in-law, clearly coming over from Ye Moli’s fan group.
Lou Anran could not help clicking into Ye Moli’s Weibo profile. His profile photo showed an androgynous face with a wicked smile, the kind only a bad boy could wear.
They say women love bad boys.
This type of man had drawn in countless girlfriend fans. Naturally, those same fans had now flocked to Mo Ying’s account and become Little Sister-in-law fans.
Ye Moli, an international gemologist with 50 million followers. His popularity rivaled that of a top celebrity. With just a casual repost, he had pushed Mo Ying’s momentum on the Sing for the Song program to the front of the pack. She was now far ahead of the competition.
In a way, her precious girl had already become popular before Lou Anran even had the chance to promote her.
This counted as their first direct contact. Looking at the mischievous man in the photo, Lou Anran could already tell he was not someone easy to deal with. She touched her chin thoughtfully. Her baby was far too outstanding, beloved by everyone. She needed to move faster to bring her home before complications arose.
