What If I Ended Up Marrying My Enemy? - Chapter 26
Chapter 26: Confession
But of course, Yu Zhixue couldn’t exactly place himself on a stall, so he had to message them again:
“Not that one.”
This time, the replies came much slower, as if the question had stumped them. After quite a while, they finally sent back a few uncertain responses.
“I think… he really likes small animals. I once saw him feeding a stray cat.”
“Maybe the ginkgo leaves at school? He always stares in that direction when taking photos.”
…
Yu Zhixue looked at the messages, carefully noting each one down. Then he sent back a brief:
“Thank you.”
With these new insights and what he had already prepared, things were more or less complete.
He stared at the lines of text on his computer screen, picked up his phone, and made a call to the person in charge of the commercial street to finalize the arrangements.
When everything was settled, Yu Zhixue shut the computer.
Turning around, he saw Yu Wenxuan sitting in a chair nearby.
There was a book resting in Yu Wenxuan’s palm, but he wasn’t reading it—he’d been watching Yu Zhixue the whole time. Once he saw the laptop close, he asked:
“You’re done?”
Yu Zhixue hesitated.
“…Not really?”
The plan was complete, yes—but now he had to figure out a way to get Yu Wenxuan there.
Yu Wenxuan shut the book and said seriously, “You left me hanging for over an hour. Don’t provoke me like that.”
Yu Zhixue suddenly felt a little guilty. He stood up, walked over, and climbed into Yu Wenxuan’s lap.
Yu Wenxuan set the book aside and wrapped an arm around his waist, resting his forehead on Yu Zhixue’s shoulder.
Unable to resist, Yu Zhixue ran a hand through his hair and said softly, “I’m here now, aren’t I?”
Yu Wenxuan chuckled in his arms, his breath brushing against the curve of Yu Zhixue’s collarbone, tickling him and making him shiver.
Then Yu Wenxuan’s cool fingertips touched just beneath his collarbone as he casually said, “Shouldn’t I get a ‘Thank you, baby’?”
The tickling in his collarbone suddenly didn’t matter anymore—because now Yu Zhixue’s ears were burning.
He covered them with his hands and started thinking about how to get Yu Wenxuan out of the house.
If he asked directly, it would be too obvious.
He thought for a moment and then tried to ease into it:
“Are you free these days? Come with me somewhere.”
Yu Wenxuan mimicked his tone:
“Probably not?”
Yu Zhixue: “…”
He leaned over and rubbed his cheek against Yu Wenxuan’s face, murmuring sweetly, “Then say you are free.”
After getting that bit of affection, Yu Wenxuan didn’t press for details. He just echoed softly, “If I’m free, I’ll be with you.”
Yu Zhixue pretended like his goal had been achieved. He let out a sigh of relief and stayed sitting on Yu Wenxuan’s lap for a while, then casually added:
“You also have to come shopping with me tomorrow. Otherwise, it will be lonely.”
Yu Wenxuan raised an eyebrow.
“It?”
Yu Zhixue pointed across the room. Following his gaze, Yu Wenxuan saw the teddy bear plush sitting next to the desk.
Well then.
Getting a companion for the plush bear because it’s “lonely”?
Yu Wenxuan accepted it in just one second. That was exactly the kind of thing Yu Zhixue would come up with.
Besides, he had been annoyed by that bear moving from the bedside to the desk for quite some time now.
Yu Wenxuan readily agreed:
“Then once it has a companion, don’t keep it by your side anymore.”
Yu Zhixue silently apologized to the bear in his heart, then agreed out loud.
…
Time passed quickly, and the long-planned day arrived.
Starting from the morning, Yu Zhixue was unusually energetic. In fact, he actually woke up before Yu Wenxuan—which was shocking in itself.
As soon as he opened his eyes and saw Yu Wenxuan’s face so close, he turned away and tried to sneak out of bed quietly.
Unfortunately, Yu Wenxuan’s arm was firmly wrapped around his waist.
Yu Zhixue had to gently peel it off, bit by bit.
Just as he finally loosened enough space to slip out, Yu Wenxuan’s brows furrowed in his sleep.
He wasn’t fully awake yet—just subconsciously sensing that the warmth in his arms was slipping away.
Instinctively, he reached out and pulled Yu Zhixue back into his embrace.
A low, sleepy voice murmured from behind him, “Why are you up so early? Stay with me a little longer.”
That one sentence made Yu Zhixue pause.
He felt the steady rhythm of breath behind him and thought—spending a little extra time like this wasn’t a waste at all.
True to his word, Yu Wenxuan only slept for a few more minutes. About ten or so later, he opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was the nape of Yu Zhixue’s neck, half-hidden beneath soft black hair.
He loosened his hand from Yu Zhixue’s waist and leaned in slightly, inhaling his scent.
Same shampoo—but somehow, it smelled so much better on Yu Zhixue.
Knowing Yu Wenxuan was now awake, Yu Zhixue finally got out of bed. Today, he’d decided to make breakfast himself.
While he stood in the kitchen, Yu Wenxuan was still upstairs.
Looking inside the fridge, Yu Zhixue decided to make something simple: sandwiches.
The toaster was already preset, and the condiments were ready. He just needed to fry two eggs and some bacon. Shouldn’t be too hard.
But let’s just say… for someone who once managed to burn cookies, frying eggs wasn’t going to be a walk in the park either.
It took three tries before Yu Zhixue finally got one that looked acceptable. After that, he got the hang of it and assembled everything nicely.
Yu Wenxuan came downstairs, having planned to make breakfast himself—only to find Yu Zhixue already seated at the table.
On it were two sandwiches and two cups of warm milk.
There was no one else in the house. It was clear who had made them.
Yu Wenxuan took one look at the food on the table—and instead of complimenting the presentation like Yu Zhixue had expected—he went straight for the hand that had been splattered with oil, now slightly red.
His first words were:
“You worked hard, baby.”
…
It was one of those rare warm days lately—Yu Zhixue had checked the forecast two days ago, and today was supposed to be sunny.
Yu Wenxuan didn’t understand why they had to go all the way to the west side of the city just to grab a plush toy, but he didn’t object. He simply came along.
They were wearing matching couple outfits. Aside from the color and embroidery on the sleeves, they were identical—any outsider could tell at a glance what their relationship was.
Thinking they were just going shopping and grabbing some toys, Yu Wenxuan hadn’t driven himself. Better to avoid the hassle of parking in a busy area.
The ride arrived quickly. The driver rolled down the window and gestured for them to get in.
Yu Wenxuan opened the door, let Yu Zhixue in first, and then followed.
The driver had barely glanced at them earlier, but now—seeing their clothes through the rearview mirror—he smiled and asked, “Couple, huh? How long have you two been together?”
Yu Wenxuan replied casually,
“We’re married.”
The driver was stunned speechless. Both of them looked way too young—he never would’ve guessed.
He had originally wanted to ask if they were going on a date, but now he changed his wording:
“Are you celebrating an anniversary or something?”
Yu Zhixue’s hand tightened nervously around his scarf, like he’d just been exposed.
In a way, the driver had hit the nail on the head.
Sensing the tension, Yu Wenxuan leaned over and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Yu Zhixue mouthed silently, “It’s a bit stuffy. Can I take the scarf off?”
That easily redirected Yu Wenxuan’s attention. He adjusted the scarf carefully to make sure no wind got in—clearly indicating: No, you may not.
Then he replied to the driver, “No, just going to the arcade to grab some toys.”
The driver had guessed wrong again.
“Oh,” he muttered, then said nothing more.
Until a sudden chill hit his face—and he rolled up his window.
“Looks like it’s starting to rain. I’ll close the window, alright?”
Yu Zhixue froze.
Rain?
But the weather forecast said today was supposed to be sunny…
Now that the windows were shut, they could clearly see the dark clouds gathering outside. The sky was gloomy, and the rain didn’t look light.
Yu Zhixue pressed a hand against the glass. Outside, the drizzle splashed against his palm like a taunt.
The driver noticed his worry.
“No worries. I have an extra umbrella—take it with you if you need.”
Yu Wenxuan thanked him, but his eyes never left Yu Zhixue.
He had caught that flicker of disappointment in his eyes just now.
But for a trip to grab toys, what difference would rain make?
And Yu Zhixue wasn’t the type to get upset over something so small.
A suspicion quietly surfaced in Yu Wenxuan’s mind—but he said nothing.
When they got out, Yu Wenxuan held up the large black umbrella the driver had lent them, shielding them both from the rain.
But the confession site—the stalls and the setup—were all outdoors.
With the rain pouring down like this, the entire area had to be cleared out.
Yu Zhixue’s phone buzzed nonstop in his pocket. Message after message poured in. He could guess what they were about—but he had no heart to read them.
In that moment, only one thought occupied his mind:
Please, let the rain stop soon.
Yu Wenxuan gently touched his face and said, “Why are you spacing out? Didn’t you want to catch some toys? Let’s go.”
Yu Zhixue pressed his face into Yu Wenxuan’s palm for warmth and gave a quiet “Mm.”
He suddenly thought of those words Yu Wenxuan had once used:
Excited, nervous, afraid.
At the time, Wenxuan had said he was just joking.
But Yu Zhixue knew—it wasn’t a lie.
Now, it was his turn to feel it.
…
An hour later, Yu Zhixue walked out of the arcade with an armful of plushies—but the rain outside had only grown heavier.
From where they stood, the decorated street wasn’t far. He could see clearly now—flowers were scattered everywhere, ruined by the storm.
The moment he confirmed the rain wouldn’t stop, he finally pulled out his phone and sent a message:
They could pack up and leave.
While Yu Zhixue was doing that, Yu Wenxuan glanced in the direction he had been looking earlier.
There, in the distance, a sea of white balloons and roses.
His earlier suspicion was now completely confirmed.
He had thought maybe Yu Zhixue had secretly gone to chat with Meng again, or had some other plan.
But he hadn’t expected this.
Near the western city’s edge, a river flowed. Rain pattered down, making even the river seem restless. The streets were empty, save for the sound of running water.
Yu Zhixue set his plushies aside, hugged his knees, and sat on the steps. Head bowed, damp hair falling over his shoulders.
Yu Wenxuan stood in front of him, looking down.
“Why do you look so pitiful?”
Yu Zhixue looked up, his eyes full of rain and melancholy.
Yu Wenxuan wondered how he had missed all the signs. How had he believed they were just here for toys?
Now he understood.
The flowers. The balloons. The street. The rare sunny day.
Yu Zhixue had prepared all of it… just to confess.
But confession didn’t need all that trouble.
Yu Wenxuan knelt down, cupped his shoulders, and lowered his head slightly—then kissed him gently and calmly.
Because he thought:
You only need to stand in front of me, look up at me once—
And I’ll kiss you.
