What If I Ended Up Marrying My Enemy? - Chapter 3
Chapter 3: A Little Bit Cute
After walking out of the villa, he finally relaxed and let out a sigh, trying to sort through his thoughts.
He really couldn’t understand why he would end up marrying Yu Zhixue five years later. He didn’t know himself, and he didn’t want to ask Yu Zhixue either.
In the end, Yu Wenxuan pulled out his phone and called Cheng Yu.
A lazy voice came through the line. “What’s up, Young Master Yu? Your wife’s already home, and you still have the mood to call me?”
The moment he thought of that “wife” being Yu Zhixue, Yu Wenxuan felt uncomfortable all over.
He lowered his voice. “Shut up and give me your address. I need to talk to you.”
…
Newcastle Bar.
Yu Wenxuan looked at Cheng Yu sitting at the bar drinking and walked over to take a seat beside him. “Can’t you pick a more decent place?”
Cheng Yu protested loudly, “How is this not decent?! Young Master Yu, not everyone is as uptight and loyal to their spouse as you are.”
Yu Wenxuan was tall, with broad shoulders, long legs, and a naturally upright posture. He was still wearing the high-end suit from his meeting. His handsome face carried an indifferent expression, giving off a distant air.
That combination of calm elegance and untouchable aura was dangerously attractive.
From the moment he walked in, everyone at the bar had been stealing glances, clearly wanting to strike up a conversation.
But the moment Cheng Yu shouted that sentence, the crowd silently backed off, simply sighing in their hearts—
Such a perfect man, married young… and totally whipped!
Yu Wenxuan narrowed his eyes slightly and cast a cold glance at Cheng Yu.
Cheng Yu instantly shrank back and changed the topic. “So… what did you want to talk to me about?”
A custom cocktail was placed in front of Yu Wenxuan. He turned the glass slightly but didn’t take a sip.
Yu Wenxuan wasn’t dumb enough to directly ask how he and Yu Zhixue ended up together. He simply said, “Just checking in on how you’re doing.”
Cheng Yu: “?”
Cheng Yu went silent for a moment, then buried his face in his hands. “So… Yu Zhixue told you, huh?”
Yu Wenxuan didn’t really understand, but that didn’t stop him from replying, “Yeah.”
“You really don’t have to check on me. It’s just a breakup, I’m used to it.” Cheng Yu lifted his head. “Just kinda embarrassing since it happened in public.”
Now Yu Wenxuan got it. Cheng Yu had gotten dumped at the airport, and Yu Zhixue just happened to witness it.
Yu Wenxuan tried to console him. “Feelings are unpredictable like that.”
Cheng Yu nodded in agreement. “Exactly.”
Yu Wenxuan lowered his gaze and spoke more deliberately, with an odd tone in his voice. “Five years ago, I never would’ve thought I’d end up with Yu Zhixue either.”
Cheng Yu’s thoughts were immediately derailed. “Right?! When you first told me you two were together, I almost thought Yu Zhixue had kidnapped you or drugged you or something.”
Thinking back on it, Cheng Yu was still shocked. “Who would’ve thought it was for real? You two even got married. Life is full of surprises.”
Yu Wenxuan paused. “I still don’t get it, really. He hated me so much in college—how did we even end up together?”
Back then, everyone in the entire business school knew they didn’t get along. Wherever Yu Wenxuan showed up, Yu Zhixue would also attend and compete with him.
Not only that, he’d always look at Yu Wenxuan with a mocking and disdainful expression.
At first it was just Yu Zhixue picking fights with Yu Wenxuan, but eventually even Yu Wenxuan was affected, and actually started treating Yu Zhixue as a rival.
He thought that kind of rivalry would go on forever. But now, that guy had suddenly become his husband.
Cheng Yu waved it off. “People change. You still remember all that, huh? Yeah, back in college, Yu Zhixue was always looking to mess with you. I used to get so mad seeing how smug he looked—I almost wanted to step in and deal with him myself.”
Then he added with lingering fear, “Good thing I didn’t. Otherwise, I’d be getting tag-teamed by you two husbands now.”
“You don’t think Yu Zhixue’s personality is a bit too cold? Doesn’t really seem suited for marriage,” Yu Wenxuan said carefully.
“Ha…” Cheng Yu gave a weak snort. That line was all too familiar.
Yu Wenxuan used to say stuff like that to him all the time—either, “I feel like Yu Zhixue doesn’t really like me,” or “Don’t you think he’s a bit too dense?”
Back then, Cheng Yu didn’t understand the nature of a man in love, and would go along with it loyally, saying things like, “What? How could he treat you like that?!”
But without fail, Yu Wenxuan would immediately cut him off. “You don’t get it. Actually, Yu Zhixue is…”
Eventually, Cheng Yu figured it out.
Yu Wenxuan didn’t want a buddy to vent to about his wife.
He wanted a single dog to feed dog food to.
So Cheng Yu replied from experience, “Yeah, Yu Zhixue really is too cold. How did you two even get together?”
He counted silently in his head. Three seconds later, Yu Wenxuan would start defending him—“But Yu Zhixue is cute even with that cold face. One time he…”
Followed by 800 words gushing over his beloved.
Sure enough, when Yu Wenxuan heard Cheng Yu’s response, he felt oddly validated.
—So there were still sane people in this world who thought he and Yu Zhixue weren’t a good match.
So he said, “I want a divorce.”
“Mhm, your Yu Zhixue is the cutest…” Cheng Yu responded absently.
Then he froze.
Wait.
What did he just say?
Divorce?!
Yu Wenxuan saw Cheng Yu’s expression twist in shock. “Yu Wenxuan, are you insane?!”
Yu Wenxuan shot back, “You’re the insane one.”
“No wonder… no wonder you specifically came to see me today. You never come just to check on me.” Cheng Yu’s voice was dazed, muttering, “Did you piss Yu Zhixue off? I’m warning you, this kind of joke doesn’t fly. If your wife hears about this, you’re dead.”
Now Yu Wenxuan truly understood.
There wasn’t a single sane person left in this world.
He didn’t bother arguing with Cheng Yu anymore. After paying the bill, he turned to leave.
Cheng Yu’s voice still rang out behind him, loud and sincere: “Just apologize when you get back, bow if you have to! Learn from me, bro—saying sorry to your wife isn’t shameful!!”
The people in the bar: Whoa… juicy gossip alert.
Yu Wenxuan felt his temples pounding. He turned around and said, “Shut up.”
Watching Yu Wenxuan’s figure disappear from the bar, Cheng Yu sighed and ordered another stiff drink.
“…Those two wouldn’t last without me…”
…
Yu Wenxuan had originally planned to book a hotel room and stay the night outside, but in the end, he still hailed a cab back to the villa.
He had to face it sooner or later.
Just as he was about to open the door, he suddenly remembered the sticky note on the entryway wall.
He hadn’t drunk anything, but the bar was filled with alcohol fumes, and Cheng Yu had gone on and on like a drunken lunatic. Naturally, some of the smell had rubbed off.
So Yu Wenxuan stopped in his tracks and stood outside in the cold wind, waiting for the smell to dissipate before going in.
He closed his eyes tightly.
Why did his own stupid promise from five years ago have to be fulfilled by him now?
But before he could stand there too long, the door suddenly opened.
Yu Zhixue had already changed out of his earlier outfit and was now wearing a white silk pajama set. His exposed collarbone was tinged pink, and his long hair was still damp—he must’ve just finished showering.
Yu Wenxuan felt like his eyes had been burned. He turned his head and discreetly looked away.
Even though he didn’t like Yu Zhixue, he had to admit… he’d become even more beautiful than five years ago.
Yu Zhixue looked at the motionless Yu Wenxuan and silently pulled him into the house, then closed the door.
Before Yu Wenxuan could ask how he knew he was outside, the house’s AI voice chimed in, “Someone has been lingering at the entrance for a long time. Please be cautious, Master!”
Yu Wenxuan: “…”
After dragging him inside, Yu Zhixue didn’t say anything else and went to the kitchen to make food.
He had rushed back on a flight today and barely touched the airplane meal. Given the situation with Yu Wenxuan, it wasn’t like the man would cook for him anymore.
So he figured he’d just boil some noodles to fill his stomach.
With nothing better to do, Yu Wenxuan followed him into the kitchen and watched as Yu Zhixue searched around. “Didn’t I tell you to get some rest?”
Yu Zhixue paused slightly, then said, “I’m hungry.”
But after all that effort, the dish Yu Zhixue ended up with barely qualified as food.
Yu Wenxuan looked at the mess and thought: If grain knew this was how it’d end up, it would’ve chosen to rot in the ground.
Yu Zhixue realized it too and was about to dump it out and start over. Yu Wenxuan frowned and couldn’t help saying, “How about I do it?”
Yu Zhixue quietly replied, “Didn’t you want to divorce me? And now you’re cooking for me?”
Yu Wenxuan: “…”
So petty. He’s still holding on to that.
But ultimately, it was Yu Wenxuan’s fault. Seeing that slightly stubborn look in Yu Zhixue’s eyes, he struggled for a moment, then completely gave in.
“I said the wrong thing. Let me make it up to you by cooking, alright? I haven’t eaten either.”
Yu Zhixue didn’t respond, just silently stepped aside.
Yu Wenxuan wasn’t a master chef, but he was miles better than the disaster that was Yu Zhixue.
He rummaged through the fridge to see what ingredients they had and quickly settled on something stir-fry-able.
As he reached for the spices, Yu Zhixue asked, “Why aren’t you asking me if I eat spicy food?”
Yu Wenxuan was puzzled. “Don’t you?”
“You lost your memory of these past few years, didn’t you?” Yu Zhixue asked quietly.
Yu Wenxuan wondered why this man always zoomed in on the most inconvenient details. He finally answered truthfully, “Back in college, I saw you eating super spicy stir-fry at Window 5.”
Then he realized that wasn’t right—he and Yu Zhixue were married now.
That comment basically screamed: I paid super close attention to you in college!
Yu Wenxuan shivered at the thought and quickly added, “I just happened to see it. For me, those memories feel like they happened just a few days ago.”
Yu Zhixue didn’t understand why Yu Wenxuan was explaining so much. Standing beside him, he leaned over and said, “Mm, so can you hurry up and cook?”
Now, every time Yu Wenxuan heard the word “cook” from Yu Zhixue’s mouth, he flinched. He ignored everything else and rushed to get the food started.
Yu Zhixue wasn’t much help. When Yu Wenxuan began stir-frying, he just stood to the side, staring at him.
Yu Wenxuan suddenly thought of the stray cats from college. When he brought them cat food, they’d stare at him with the exact same look—Big, hungry eyes, totally fixated.
Then, in the next second, Yu Zhixue was overwhelmed by the smoke from the stir-fry and started tearing up.
Yu Wenxuan was startled. Seeing the tears gathering in Yu Zhixue’s eyes, he sighed. “Can you wait outside?”
As he walked out, Yu Zhixue kept turning back to look, clearly still craving that meal.
Yu Wenxuan moved quickly. He whipped up two simple dishes and boiled some noodles.
When he brought them out, Yu Zhixue had already set the table and was sitting properly in his seat—like this wasn’t just a meal, but a multi-billion-dollar negotiation.
Yu Wenxuan wasn’t in the mood. He ate a few perfunctory bites, while Yu Zhixue, on the other hand, seemed genuinely starving.
Watching Yu Zhixue’s long lashes flutter, Yu Wenxuan found himself asking, “Don’t you owe me something?”
Yu Zhixue paused mid-bite, cheeks slightly puffed. When he looked up, his eyes seemed rounder.
After a moment of thought, he tilted his head and softly said, “Thank you?”
Yu Wenxuan: “…”
Yu Wenxuan felt like he had just taken a critical hit from a combo move.
He quickly looked away and muttered, “No problem. Don’t mention it.”
But deep inside, he was thinking—If Yu Zhixue in the future always looked like this… then maybe, just maybe, he could understand why he ended up with him.
Because he’d just had a terrifying realization:
Yu Zhixue might actually be… a little bit cute.
