What If I Ended Up Marrying My Enemy? - Chapter 37
Chapter 37: Cheek
Yu Zhixue was pulled into the room by his wrist. The moment he stepped into the office, he heard the sound of the door closing and locking behind him.
The crisp click rang in his ears, followed by a kiss that was even more urgent than before.
His back was pressed against the cold surface of the door. Yu Zhixue’s chin was lifted forcefully by Yu Wenxuan, leaving him with no choice but to look up. A flush crept up quietly from the side of his neck.
The possessive kiss left him breathless and dizzy. Through the narrow gap between their bodies, his gaze drifted toward the desk.
There was a bouquet of flowers and a bag—which probably held his ice cream.
Yu Wenxuan immediately noticed his distraction. His grip tightened slightly as he ordered, “Look at me.”
Yu Zhixue’s attention was pulled back.
But after a while, Yu Zhixue realized the other still had no intention of stopping.
Although the kiss felt good, his ice cream seemed on the verge of melting.
His mouth was completely occupied, and he couldn’t speak to remind him. So, Yu Zhixue began using the tip of his tongue to gently push back, trying to get Yu Wenxuan to stop, but it was futile—he was easily overpowered.
Worse yet, his tongue was hooked slightly in response.
Yu Zhixue: “!”
He looked up again, refocusing his gaze, only to find Yu Wenxuan still looking calm and composed—completely unfazed by the fact that he was misbehaving inside someone else’s mouth.
Left with no choice, Yu Zhixue hardened his heart and bit Yu Wenxuan on the lip.
Finally, Yu Wenxuan stopped.
As air filled his lungs again, Yu Zhixue felt like he might cry. Uncertain, he quickly raised his hand to cover his eyes.
Seeing him like that, Yu Wenxuan spoke helplessly, “How come you still look so pitiful after so many kisses?”
Yu Zhixue stayed silent.
His hands blocked his face, so Yu Wenxuan couldn’t see his expression. “Put your hands down, will you? I can’t see your face.”
Truthfully, even without looking, he could imagine exactly what Yu Zhixue looked like. After all these years, he knew him inside and out.
His eyes would be watery, slightly red, his expression beautiful yet fragile.
But even so, he still wanted to see it for himself.
The slight tremble in his arms gave away Yu Zhixue’s hesitation. After a moment’s pause, he finally lowered his hands.
Thankfully, he wasn’t crying yet.
“Weren’t you the one who told me to come kiss you? Why are you sulking now?” Yu Wenxuan bent down to meet his gaze.
“I’m not sulking,” Yu Zhixue murmured, tone light as he complained, “You kissed me for too long. My ice cream’s going to melt.”
Yu Wenxuan turned to glance at the desk, then chuckled. “Go eat it.”
Yu Zhixue had expected him to say something like “just a few bites” or “only eat half,” but Yu Wenxuan said nothing.
Maybe he forgot?
Since he forgot, Yu Zhixue didn’t bother reminding him. He walked over and opened the bag. The ice cream did look slightly melted, but not too badly.
The packaging was delicate, and the portion was small, with only a little bit peeking above the wrapper—probably just a few bites.
Just as he unwrapped the spoon, Yu Wenxuan came up behind him, resting his face in the crook of Yu Zhixue’s neck. “Not planning to feed me a bite?”
Yu Zhixue scooped a spoonful and held it out, but Yu Wenxuan didn’t take it. “I’ll just take a bite directly.”
Yu Zhixue didn’t quite understand the difference between using his spoon or biting directly, but still, he held out the ice cream for him.
Yu Wenxuan took a massive bite, nearly devouring the entire visible tip.
Yu Zhixue was dumbfounded.
He stared at the half-eaten dessert in his hand—barely a third left—and then looked back at Yu Wenxuan, wide-eyed.
Yu Wenxuan didn’t care much for desserts. One big bite was enough to give him a cold ache in his teeth.
Seeing the dazed and shocked look in Yu Zhixue’s eyes, he turned his head and gave a soft laugh.
Yu Wenxuan hadn’t warned him beforehand because he already had a plan—and he never considered the possibility of failure.
Because he knew that no matter how much Yu Zhixue liked something, if he wanted it, Yu Zhixue would always be the first to offer him a bite.
That, perhaps, was what it meant to have a clear sense of love.
The ice cream was delicious, but Yu Zhixue barely got a taste. He bit his spoon, staring at him with a trace of grievance in his tone: “You did that on purpose.”
Yu Wenxuan came over to smooth down the hair he had ruffled earlier and apologized, not denying it, “I’ll take you out sometime soon. You can buy whatever you want.”
“…Really?” Yu Zhixue asked.
Yu Wenxuan smiled. “Really.”
From what he knew, Yu Zhixue had been busy lately. The earliest time they’d probably be able to go out together would be the weekend. After a few days, buying another one wouldn’t be a big deal.
Generously, Yu Zhixue chose not to argue. “Then you better remember.”
Looking at the pen on the desk, Yu Wenxuan asked, “Want me to write a guarantee?”
Hearing that, Yu Zhixue actually handed him paper and pen. As he pushed them over, he muttered, “You’re the one offering—I never asked for it.”
Yu Wenxuan took the materials and began writing with practiced ease, his strokes sharp and swift.
As he wrote, he nodded. “Mm, I want to give you a guarantee.”
Yu Zhixue took the finished paper, looked it over for a few seconds, and then carefully pressed it down under his belongings.
“Let’s go eat,” Yu Wenxuan said as he stood up and reached out a hand. “Still got room?”
Yu Zhixue placed his hand in his and muttered, “I barely ate anything.”
……
They didn’t have their food delivered and instead went down to the cafeteria to eat together.
The cafeteria was nearly empty by then. The few people they passed seemed flustered and avoided eye contact.
Yu Zhixue found it odd but didn’t overthink it, obediently following Yu Wenxuan to get food.
He was a picky eater and didn’t like vegetables much.
Looking at Yu Wenxuan’s already-full plate, Yu Zhixue tried to sneak away with his own.
But just a few steps out, Yu Wenxuan placed a hand on his shoulder, glancing at his vegetable-less plate and said quietly, “Go get some greens.”
Yu Zhixue resisted.
Yu Wenxuan added, “Three seconds. If you don’t move, I’ll do it for you.”
Reluctantly, Yu Zhixue picked a little bit of vegetables. But Yu Wenxuan’s gaze lingered.
“……” Yu Zhixue paused, biting his lip, and added a bit more—just barely within his tolerance.
Yu Wenxuan knew his limits better than he did himself. After estimating the amount, he finally nodded. “Let’s go.”
Throughout the meal, Yu Zhixue tried multiple times to sneak vegetables into Yu Wenxuan’s plate but was caught every time.
Even acting cute didn’t work. In the end, he had no choice but to eat them himself.
After eating, he opened his phone to find several unread messages—all from one person: Ji Hua.
The first message made Yu Zhixue’s pupils quake.
“President Yu, someone saw you two in the break room. Everyone knows about your relationship now.”
“Also, everyone’s asking what to call him.”
What were they even doing in the break room earlier?
Yu Zhixue’s memory rushed back.
They had lingered there for quite a while, being all lovey-dovey—he even kissed him.
His expression turned cold immediately, too noticeably so. Yu Wenxuan, seeing how he suddenly wilted while holding his phone, asked, “What’s wrong?”
Yu Zhixue didn’t tell him. He slid the messages away and replied, “Nothing. Just work stuff.”
Whether Yu Wenxuan believed it or not was unclear.
Scrolling down, Yu Zhixue realized there really were some work-related messages.
He read through them, then ignored the earlier ones and finally replied to Ji Hua:
“I’ll head over this afternoon.”
After sending it, Yu Zhixue looked up at Yu Wenxuan and said, “Looks like you’ll have to fulfill your promise sooner than expected.”
Yu Wenxuan: “…What do you mean?”
Propping up his cheek, with a few rebellious strands of hair falling along his face, Yu Zhixue replied, “I just got a message. There’s a project in Nancheng I need to go check on. But it’s really simple.”
“So,” Yu Zhixue smiled, “this afternoon, you’ll have to take me shopping.”
His smile was unusually bright, eyes curving into a charming arc. All the usual chill was gone, replaced with warmth.
Yu Wenxuan hadn’t expected things to turn out this way—but there was no way to say no, especially since the guarantee he just signed was still in Yu Zhixue’s possession.
And if Yu Zhixue was smiling, then everything else didn’t really matter.
Yu Wenxuan sighed and pinched his cheek. “Got it.”
……
Yu Zhixue wasn’t lying—it really was a simple matter.
The person in charge over there was already nervous just seeing Yu Zhixue in person. When he saw Yu Wenxuan too, he nearly panicked.
Not knowing how he had managed to summon these two high-level figures, he nervously rushed through the process at lightning speed.
When he finally escorted them out, he thought he saw the two of them holding hands in the distance.
With the work out of the way, it was time to slack off. Though a few documents were still left on Yu Zhixue’s desk, he decided to leave them for later.
Yu Zhixue asked Yu Wenxuan to take him back to that store and buy him the same dessert again.
Once inside, Yu Wenxuan ordered the exact same thing based on memory, but the shop owner regretfully informed them that the ice cream was sold out.
He double-checked the order and turned to Yu Zhixue. “They’re out of ice cream. Want a cake instead?”
The weather was a bit chilly outside. Yu Zhixue’s long hair draped behind his shoulders, and he blew into his clasped hands for warmth. Around his neck was a scarf Yu Wenxuan had forced onto him.
He looked all soft and fluffy.
“That’s fine,” Yu Zhixue replied. A little disappointed, but he wasn’t too fussy.
Hearing that, Yu Wenxuan looked over the display and pointed to a nicely presented cake. “This one.”
The shop owner quickly packed it up. “Would you like it to-go?”
Thinking Yu Zhixue would eat it right away, Yu Wenxuan was about to ask when he felt something press against his shoulder.
Yu Wenxuan was quite a bit taller than him, so Yu Zhixue couldn’t see what was happening. He stepped forward on tiptoe and rested his face on Yu Wenxuan’s shoulder.
His chin settled there as he answered on his behalf, “No need. We’ll eat it now.”
The shop owner was startled by the sudden head poking out, and then got a little excited, softening their voice: “I’ll give you some extra biscuits too.”
Yu Wenxuan, puzzled, turned his head to see the fluffy head on his shoulder.
No wonder the shop owner reacted like that.
Even though Yu Zhixue was on tiptoe, it wasn’t quite enough. His cheek was squished, plump and round.
He looked extremely cute.
And somehow, he didn’t realize it. Tilting his head, he gave Yu Wenxuan a confused look, not understanding why everyone was staring at him.
In the end, Yu Zhixue accepted the little cake along with the complimentary biscuits.
Just as he was about to try a bite with his fork, he noticed Yu Wenxuan still staring at him with deep, unreadable eyes.
Even though he had been tricked once before, Yu Zhixue hesitated for a second—then still held out the dessert and asked, “Want a bite?”
He did want a bite.
Just not of the cake in Yu Zhixue’s hand…
But of his cheek.
