What to Do if You Mess With an Omega? - Chapter 19
She had guessed correctly.
Xu Yuqing did have to attend a banquet that evening.
When Ning Hanzhu heard the invitation, she was astonished beyond belief. “What! You say you want to bring me to the banquet? This… this isn’t such a good idea.”
Xu Yuqing had someone prepare a splendid black-and-gold gown for her without any further discussion, then pushed her toward the changing room. “It’s just to have you accompany me through the motions. It’s not like I’m going to sell you off.”
Ning Hanzhu’s height had shot up fiercely lately, growing at an astonishing rate like a resilient little grass that had broken through the stone pressing it down and now surged upward. While others grew two or three centimeters in half a year or a full year, she had gained five centimeters in just a few days.
The clothes she had brought to the capital star no longer fit; they were too short now.
She tried it on with the mindset that it probably would not fit, so she could have an excuse not to go. This way, it would not be her actively refusing.
The result—
She pushed open the door of the changing room.
Xu Yuqing, who had been sitting on the sofa flipping through a magazine, heard the noise and quickly looked up. A flash of amazement crossed her eyes, and then she stood, walked over to Ning Hanzhu, and fastened a brooch to the front of her chest. “This gown suits you very well.”
More than just suiting—it seemed practically tailored to her measurements.
Ning Hanzhu now stood nearly one meter seventy-eight tall. In this black-and-gold suit, her legs appeared long, her waist slim, and her hips curvaceous. She turned left and right in front of the mirror, growing more and more amazed with each glance. Was the person in the mirror really her?
As the saying went, clothes made the man just as a saddle made the horse.
She was almost starting to admire herself.
Xu Yuqing took a barrier patch from the person nearby. “Use this.”
Ning Hanzhu glanced at it. “What’s the difference?”
Xu Yuqing said, “My medical team made it specially. It lasts forty-eight hours and the material is waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about your pheromones leaking if you sweat.”
Ning Hanzhu understood at once. The one from the hospital only blocked for twenty-four hours. The other woman must have been concerned that she might lose control of her pheromones in such a setting. But this was for the best—it saved her from constantly worrying about offending someone inexplicably.
She tore off the barrier patch at the back of her neck without a care and replaced it with the one Xu Yuqing had given her. She casually stuffed the used patch into her pocket, only to find it empty.
Xu Yuqing reached out her hand. “Give it to me.”
Ning Hanzhu did not think much of it and handed the used barrier patch to Xu Yuqing. As their palms touched, that soft, boneless sensation made her pause in a daze for a moment.
This woman might truly be made of water.
So soft.
The people nearby, however, showed expressions of surprise. They exchanged glances before lowering their gazes, as if they had seen nothing.
A trace of the uniquely Alpha pheromone scent lingered in Xu Yuqing’s palm. She had smelled it before; at first, it had been so domineering that it made her head spin. Upon closer whiff, she realized it was the thick, mellow aroma of wine.
Now, the lingering scent carried a hint of sweet grape fragrance as well.
Xu Yuqing stepped away for a moment. When she returned, a flush colored her face, as if she had applied rouge, and her cool eyes shimmered with moisture, like she had drunk too much.
Ning Hanzhu found it odd. “Why is your face suddenly so red? Are you running a fever?”
Her hand always moved faster than her brain.
The back of her hand lightly touched Xu Yuqing’s slightly cool forehead. Both of them froze.
Xu Yuqing’s pupils widened. She forcefully slapped the hand away and then glared at her fiercely. The culprit did not find the spot where she had been hit painful at all. Instead, she thought that glance was so tender and coquettish, like Cupid’s arrow striking straight to her heart.
Ning Hanzhu heard her own heart pounding wildly.
Oh no, she seemed to have crossed a line again.
She always forgot this world’s strange gender dynamics and instinctively treated the other woman like an ordinary girl. But she was a Beta.
An Alpha like her touching a Beta girl like that… she was probably being a total rogue.
Her mouth opened and closed several times, but she could not come up with any excuse.
Xu Yuqing had already composed herself, though. “Time’s almost up. Let’s go.”
A compact hover car waited nearby. After the two got in, the vehicle rose into midair at once. While Ning Hanzhu felt curious, she racked her brains for a way to apologize for what had just happened. Her hand had acted on impulse, but she had not meant it. Yet as she stared at Xu Yuqing’s exquisite profile, she lost her train of thought again.
This woman had seemed so cool and aloof at first, keeping everyone at arm’s length. But after spending time together, one could see she actually had a surprisingly good temper, especially patient with children.
Still, she could be infuriating at times.
That coquettish, little-woman pout from earlier was something she had never seen before. Had she misread it?
Had she really misread it?
Ning Hanzhu remained distracted all the way to their destination.
“Stay close to me in a bit.”
“Not a step apart?”
That probably meant her role was something like Yang Xiu’s—as a bodyguard.
Ever since stepping out of the hover car, Xu Yuqing wore a faint smile on her face, just like the casual demeanor she had shown when they first met. Ning Hanzhu could not help stealing a glance. This must be the mask she used to deal with others.
Thinking of Xu Yuqing’s lazy, disdainful true self in private, Ning Hanzhu immediately mustered all her focus. This banquet was probably just a formality Xu Yuqing had to go through.
Since she had come, she could not hold Xu Yuqing back.
As soon as her Alpha senses activated, before they even stepped into the banquet hall, a multitude of miscellaneous voices flooded her ears.
“I hear they even invited that person. I wonder if Young General Yan will come.”
“Oh my oh my.”
“Stop fangirling. She’s already taken.”
“I heard they even set a date for the wedding, but then something unexpected happened, and in the end, the wedding got canceled.”
“Really?”
“We can just ask Yan Yan and find out. If they didn’t get married, I think you could make a move.”
“Shh, Second Miss Luo is here.”
“A crazy Omega like that—we’d better not provoke her.”
…
They said three women made a drama, but Ning Hanzhu felt like there were at least thousands or hundreds of voices buzzing in her ears, chattering away about people she did not recognize at all.
A slender figure hurried from the side, running especially fast. Ning Hanzhu saw that Xu Yuqing seemed unaware and was walking straight ahead. In two more steps, they would probably collide.
She pulled Xu Yuqing’s wrist and drew her into her arms, dodging the impact. Xu Yuqing’s soft body pressed against her, and a fragrance wafted into her nose.
Ning Hanzhu twitched her nose. That scent was ethereal and elusive; she caught it for a moment, but it vanished just as quickly, leaving her heart itching.
Xu Yuqing, however, shook off her hand as if it were scalding hot and straightened up. That figure skidded to a sudden halt right in front of them.
“Sister-in-law, are you still mad at me?”
“???”
Sister… sister-in-law.
Wait, who was?
Ning Hanzhu looked at the girl in front of her, then at Xu Yuqing, whom she kept staring at. Then her eyes widened.
