What to Do if You Mess With an Omega? - Chapter 20
A barrage of questions tumbled through her mind, leaving her heart itching like a cat’s claws. Ning Hanzhu stole a glance at Xu Yuqing’s expression.
The smile that had just appeared on Xu Yuqing’s face vanished. Her expression turned somewhat cold, as if she were looking at a stranger. “My engagement to Yan Bojing has long been null and void. I ask Third Miss Yan to address me as Miss Xu, just as she did in the past, to avoid any misunderstandings.”
Yan Yan looked as if she might faint at any moment, like a little white flower crushed by frost, tears welling up but not quite falling. Perhaps because Ning Hanzhu stood nearby, she took two steps forward only to retreat again. She used a resentful voice to murmur her accusation in a low tone. “How can you do this, sister-in-law? My brother has been devoted to you alone. He waited for you for five whole years.”
Xu Yuqing’s expression did not change at those words. “That’s his business. I did not ask him to wait.”
Whoa.
Ning Hanzhu caught a whiff of melodrama from those few words.
Yan Yan stared in shock, as if she could not believe those words had come from her mouth. Xu Yuqing had no interest in saying more to her, though. She walked around her and continued forward.
Xu Yuqing noticed the person at her side hesitating to speak. “What do you want to ask?”
Ning Hanzhu had many questions she wanted to ask, but in the end, she could not voice a single one. She wanted to know who Yan Bojing was. She also wanted to know what it meant that the engagement no longer counted…
But after thinking it over, she realized these were all Xu Yuqing’s personal matters. Moreover, their relationship had not grown close enough for her to pry into them.
Ning Hanzhu pulled her thoughts back. She suddenly mentioned, “Second Miss Luo is heading this way.”
Xu Yuqing gave her a suspicious glance.
Luo Tianran had already heard from that group that Xu Yuqing had arrived. But upon seeing that Xu Yuqing had actually brought Ning Hanzhu along, she let out an “oh” and wore an expression full of anticipation for the drama.
Ning Hanzhu always felt that Luo Tianran’s gaze stripped her bare inside and out, utterly blatant. She subconsciously tugged at her jacket.
Luo Tianran withdrew her gaze and linked arms with Xu Yuqing with a cheeky grin. “When it comes to taste, Sister Xu’s eye is the sharpest. As for those fangirls in the banquet hall, Sister Xu need not pay them any mind. Let’s go sit over there.”
Ning Hanzhu quite agreed with that.
She had just overheard quite a few voices, most discussing how some Alpha was handsome and gentle, or how another Alpha was devoted and stubborn. They sounded like a bunch of lovestruck youths, less like a business banquet and more like a matchmaking event.
Hm? Hm, hm?
Could it really be some kind of matchmaking banquet?
Luo Tianran and Xu Yuqing found seats in a remote corner.
“Yang Xiu, fetch me some of the things I like to eat.”
“Yes, miss.”
As Yang Xiu left, he signaled to Ning Hanzhu. She caught on and followed. She saw this Alpha, who always appeared stern and unapproachable to outsiders, pick up a plate and take quite a few desserts. When he noticed Ning Hanzhu standing there dumbfounded, taking nothing, he let out a light scoff. “You probably don’t even know Miss Xu’s preferences. How dare you.”
Ning Hanzhu felt utterly confused.
Dare what?
Had she done something utterly heinous?
“Brother Yang, what exactly are you talking about?”
“I don’t deserve that ‘brother.'”
“Oh, Yang Xiu, if you have something to say, just say it straight.”
“…You’ll find out soon enough.”
“???”
Ning Hanzhu hated people who said half and left half unsaid the most. She was no mind-reading worm in their bellies, so how could she know what they were thinking?
But as for Xu Yuqing’s preferences, who said she did not know them?
Soon, Ning Hanzhu carried over two full plates of food and placed them in front of Xu Yuqing. “I just tasted them. The flavor’s decent.”
Luo Tianran was in the middle of forking a piece of blue mini-cake when she saw what Ning Hanzhu had brought. She choked at once. “Cough, cough, cough.”
Xu Yuqing handed her a glass of wine without missing a beat. “Why eat in such a rush? No one’s fighting you for it.”
“Where did this clueless fool come from? How could you bring something like that? It simply insults our Miss Yuqing’s refined taste.”
“???”
It was just a plate of spicy shrimp.
How did that insult her taste? Did interstellar people not eat spicy shrimp? What a bunch of hicks—they did not know the joy of spice.
Ning Hanzhu grew angry and turned toward the source of the voice. The newcomer wore flashy clothes, his hair slicked back in a big pompadour that exposed his full, shiny forehead. He looked somewhat presentable, but his mouth spewed no ivory.
But as he drew closer, Ning Hanzhu’s expression grew increasingly odd. “You wouldn’t happen to be a Ning, would you?”
Ning Yingwu glanced down his nose at her. “And who might you belong to? I’ve never seen you before.”
Ning Hanzhu suddenly laughed.
What a coincidence.
One stroke of the pen could not write two Nings, yet after just a few years, these people had forgotten her completely. Then again, who would think that someone discarded on Elf Star would return to the capital star?
The main Ning family branch probably assumed the sisters had died long ago.
Xu Yuqing’s lips curved slightly. “Young Master Ning doesn’t recognize her?”
Ning Yingwu had no intention of bothering with this Alpha who had popped up out of nowhere yet stood behind Xu Yuqing. He vaguely felt she looked somewhat familiar, but that was all.
If not for Xu Yuqing speaking up, he would have been too lazy to probe the meaning behind that familiarity. After all, she was just an irrelevant person. “Does Miss Xu think I should know her?”
He gave Ning Hanzhu a couple more glances.
Ning Hanzhu herself was not bad-looking, and with this outfit, she resembled some young master from a fine family. He just wondered which family had the skill to place her at Xu Yuqing’s side.
He could not recall.
He truly could not recall.
Ning Yingwu grew curious. “Have we met somewhere before?”
Ning Hanzhu had wondered before coming what attitude she should take if she encountered Ning family members. Now she knew. She sneered coldly. “Ning Yingwu, you’re not that old, yet your brain does not work very well. You actually forgot me.”
Xu Yuqing pulled the plate of spicy shrimp Ning Hanzhu had brought right in front of her. “Ning Hanzhu, come over and peel shrimp for me.”
Ning Hanzhu very much wanted her to peel them herself—she was not without hands.
But at the thought of Xu Yuqing’s excessively soft hands, Ning Hanzhu found herself already kneeling in front of her, focusing on peeling the shrimp.
Perhaps because the place differed, the interstellar shrimp did not resemble those from her world. These had large bodies and plenty of meat, but their shells looked especially ferocious, hard and covered in protruding spines. A slight carelessness could result in scratches.
Yet Ning Hanzhu peeled one effortlessly, drawing out a complete shrimp.
Meanwhile, Ning Yingwu stood there stunned like a wooden chicken upon hearing Ning Hanzhu’s name.
This was Ning Hanzhu?
The Ning Hanzhu who had beaten him as a child and whom they had later driven to some nameless star!?
She had not died long ago?
No one paid him any mind, though. Most attention focused on Ning Hanzhu, especially as she presented Xu Yuqing with a plate of perfectly intact shrimp meat. Not a single one in the dish had a broken tail.
