What to Do if You Mess With an Omega? - Chapter 24
The hover car vanished in a puff of smoke.
Ning Hanzhu was more inclined to think that Xu Yuqing had simply forgotten her by accident rather than deliberately leaving her behind without a care.
So she did not dwell on it.
After all, she had not left home entirely unprepared. She opened the map Lu Yutang had given her and checked it. The optical computer displayed her exact location on the map in detail. She pulled up the previously marked residential spot, and soon the distance along with routes appeared.
It was highly intelligent and very user-friendly.
Ning Hanzhu chose to take the hover train back to the residence. She did not wait long at the station before the train arrived. After studying it, she found that the hover train here was much like a subway, though much faster.
Sitting on the train and looking outside, she could hardly make out anything. She had originally wanted to take in the capital star’s charm, but after passing two stations, she gave up and simply pulled out her optical computer to fiddle with.
The original body still had some memories of the capital star. Ning Hanzhu quickly marked the Ning main family’s location on the map, thinking of the Ning family members she had encountered at the banquet today.
They would surely learn soon enough that she had returned to the capital star.
The Ning family did know of Ning Hanzhu’s existence, but that was no big deal. After all, she was just a child of mediocre aptitude who had been sent away. Even if she came back, what could it possibly mean?
Who could have imagined that Ning Yingwu, limping home, would immediately drop a bombshell, like a thunderclap from a clear sky.
Ning Hesong, the head of the Ning family, paced back and forth in front of Ning Yingwu with his hands behind his back, his face tense. “Are you sure that little beast is stronger than Yan Bojing?”
Ning Yingwu replied uneasily, “Probably.”
“What do you mean ‘probably’? It either is or it isn’t. Did you see it or not?”
“Hey, if you and Dad hadn’t kept grilling me with questions, I wouldn’t have missed the head-on clash between them. I heard it from the others at the banquet. Plenty of people saw it.”
The woman on the sofa saw the father and son quarreling over someone who should not even exist. She rubbed her forehead. “It’s all baseless gossip. Look how worked up you two are getting.”
How could Ning Yingwu not be anxious?
He had not even remembered who Ning Hanzhu was at first, but after his father’s reminder, he recalled how he had snatched things from her as a child and even had people beat her. “Mom, you don’t know how formidable she is now. Somehow she latched onto Miss Yuqing. The two of them were all hugs and cuddles. It’s infuriating.”
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got.
He had spent so much money, yet he had not even gotten close to Xu Yuqing.
Jealousy twisted Ning Yingwu’s face.
Du Rongrong sat up straight at those words. “Son, do you mean she has become that person’s protector now?”
Ning Yingwu could not say for sure. “I don’t know if she’s a protector, but when they left, she carried Miss Yuqing away.” Thinking of that glaring scene, Ning Yingwu hated how he had not just had her beaten to death back then. He had gone too easy on her. “After all these years, when has Miss Yuqing ever let anyone touch her like that? She must have used some trick to bewitch Miss Yuqing.”
Du Rongrong saw how every sentence from him circled back to Xu Yuqing, and it gave her a headache. “Enough. If she really is that person’s protector, then we’re in trouble.”
Ning Hesong sighed at that. “If that’s the case, then do we have to personally bring her back home?”
Du Rongrong frowned.
The trash they had barely managed to bundle up and ship off all those years ago—they actually had to welcome her back? Just the thought made Du Rongrong feel like she was suffocating.
“Wait until I look into it first. What if it’s all rumors and hearsay? We’d just be stirring up trouble for nothing.”
Besides, she did not believe Ning Hanzhu could have such good fortune.
Xu Yuqing, a woman who looked down on everyone—how could she possibly look down on someone like her when she had turned down a young talent like Yan Bojing?
She did not believe it.
Xu Yuqing did not believe it either. Over these years, she had dealt with all sorts of Alphas, seen them go mad over a mere trace of her pheromones, utterly lacking in self-control. She had seen them profess love with their words, only to lose all reason and turn into beasts at the scent of a compatible pheromone.
No Alpha had ever escaped her grasp. If she wanted, she could have many protectors.
But she only found these Alphas utterly repulsive and disgusting.
A mere Ning Hanzhu.
She hesitated for a moment but still had the AI find someone to pick up Ning Hanzhu, lest she get lost in this unfamiliar place.
Mm, she had not meant to abandon her.
It was just that the thought of sitting face-to-face with her earlier, while she… made her deeply uncomfortable.
Xu Yuqing had the AI purge all the pheromones from the hover car and activate the air circulation. Even after the car had driven far away, she could not help asking, “How high did the pheromone index in the air go just now?”
[58 percent. Master, your heat has come early. Shall I book a doctor for you?]
Xu Yuqing’s heart jolted. She always kept her pheromones below 50 percent and had never had this happen.
But she still could not help asking, “How high did hers go just now?”
[0]
Xu Yuqing fell silent, saying nothing for a long time. Only after a while did her puzzled voice emerge. “Could it be that while I was away, they forgot to maintain you regularly?”
Otherwise, how could an AI make such a huge mistake.
[Master, during the time you were away, Bai Bai cleaned up my internet junk every other day and gave me a full maintenance every five days.]
“…”
Xu Yuqing returned to her residence harboring such suspicions. She parked the hover car, and the AI chattered on in her ear.
[I have booked a doctor for you. She will arrive in ten minutes. You can also take time for a glass of fine wine to soothe your mood. Shall I prepare a new blend for you?]
Wine?
The dizzy, immersive feeling from earlier had not yet faded. She even felt as if the sweet grape scent still lingered on her.
Xu Yuqing refused without thinking. “No, give me a glass of lemon—” Thinking of the fruit drink Ning Hanzhu had handed her at the banquet earlier, she changed her mind at once. “A glass of plain water.”
Right, she loved plain water.
The AI said nothing this time. As Xu Yuqing sat down on the sofa, it directed the household nanny robot to hand her the glass of water.
Xu Yuqing was still pondering the AI’s error in the hover car. But what if it had not been an error?
She took a sip of water.
Suddenly, it tasted bland and flavorless, not good at all.
Xu Yuqing set the glass down again, feeling even more irritated.
Ning Hanzhu had not lost control because of her. On the contrary, she had stayed calm and composed the whole time, without even crossing any lines. For some reason, a thread of displeasure rose in Xu Yuqing’s heart.
