- What to Do, I've Been Targeted by the Villain Again [Quick Transmigration]
- Chapter 13 - Wagging Tail
Xu Sangning couldn’t figure out how she had accidentally tapped the video call button—and why the person on the other end had picked up so quickly. She hadn’t even had time to react.
“My phone slipped and hit me. Sorry, I don’t know how I ended up calling you on video,” Xu Sangning said, rubbing her nose.
“It’s fine,” Ji Ying chuckled softly. “Playing with your phone while lying on the couch does come with the risk of getting smacked in the face.”
Xu Sangning sat up and looked at the screen. “Am I bothering you? If so, I can just—”
“No,” Ji Ying cut in immediately. “Of course not.”
“You seem pretty stressed about work lately.”
“A little… but it’s nothing serious. You know I like talking to you.”
Xu Sangning fell silent for a moment before laughing. “You’re so much better than my brother. If I talk to him for more than two sentences, he gets annoyed.”
“Next time, just ignore him and call me instead.”
“Okay.”
Another silence settled between them.
Xu Sangning really wanted to ask Ji Ying why she enjoyed talking to her. It wasn’t like their conversations were particularly meaningful—most of the time, they just skimmed the surface.
On the other end, Ji Ying picked up Ji Xiaohei and held the cat in her arms, waving its paw at the camera.
Xu Sangning leaned back against the couch and softly called out to Ji Xiaohei.
The cat sniffed around the phone, searching for Xu Sangning’s scent.
“Silly little thing,” Xu Sangning sighed helplessly.
——
Xu Qiexing had been hitting nothing but roadblocks lately—no matter what he did, someone seemed to be sabotaging him from behind the scenes.
He had people investigate, expecting it to be difficult to uncover the culprit. To his surprise, the person hadn’t even bothered to hide their tracks.
“Ji Ying?” Xu Qiexing was baffled. “What’s her problem?”
Though Ji Ying and Xu Sangning had already earned the title of “crazy duo” in his books, he honestly hadn’t expected Ji Ying to be this unhinged.
What’s more, after racking his brain, Xu Qiexing couldn’t recall any recent interactions with Ji Ying that might have accidentally offended her. So the possibility of that being the reason was zero.
Which meant… it had to be Xu Sangning?
Xu Qiexing thought it was highly plausible. After all, he knew his sister had a habit of acting recklessly and speaking without thinking—offending people was practically second nature to her.
When Ji Ying received Xu Qiexing’s call, she had to admit, it was a little awkward.
But thankfully, she’d been mentally preparing herself for this moment, so her skin was thick enough now.
“What’s your deal?” Xu Qiexing demanded irritably. “Did Xu Sangning piss you off?”
Ji Ying narrowed her eyes. “What’s your deal? Of course Sangning didn’t do anything.”
“Then why are you targeting me?”
“Exactly—I’m targeting you. Shouldn’t you be reflecting on yourself instead of blaming Sangning?”
Xu Qiexing: “…”
Xu Qiexing rubbed his temples in frustration. The whole reason he suspected Xu Sangning was because he didn’t know what he’d done wrong.
“You randomly accusing Sangning like this—she must put up with a lot from you normally.”
Xu Qiexing: ???
“Ji Ying, when was the last time you got your brain checked?” Xu Qiexing scowled. “Who in the world could possibly make her suffer?”
Now he suspected Xu Sangning had been badmouthing him to Ji Ying, which was why Ji Ying was giving him trouble.
But that logic didn’t hold up either. He and Xu Sangning were family—her annual dividends depended on how much he earned.
So in the end, he concluded that Ji Ying might just be genuinely unwell.
“Can you be more specific?” Xu Qiexing pressed his temples.
Ji Ying also had a headache but still sneered, “President Xu, if you don’t want others to know, then don’t do it in the first place.”
Without waiting for Xu Qiexing to retort, Ji Ying quickly hung up the phone.
For the first time in his over twenty years of life, Xu Qiexing felt utterly bewildered.
What on earth had he done?
Judging by Ji Ying’s tone, it might really have nothing to do with Xu Sangning.
So, what exactly had he done?
——
System: Host, the male lead’s mental state has entered a highly unstable phase.
“What does that have to do with me? I did everything according to your instructions,” Ji Ying leaned back in her chair, feeling a sudden lightness after speaking. “Now we just have to wait for the male and female leads to further develop their relationship.”
Ji Ying smiled.
Even if this plot point had derailed, as long as the next one arrived, she could probably still fix the mess she’d created.
“By the way, apply for mental compensation for me. It’s your male and female leads who messed up the plot, making me look like an idiot. I feel like my mental state is extremely unstable right now.”
The system was speechless.
System: Instead of properly completing your tasks, you just rely on squeezing compensation out of us?
The system glanced at Ji Ying’s past task records—this person always found ways to claim compensation from every angle, earning more from it than her base salary.
“You’re a wage slave, and so am I. Why make things hard for each other?” Ji Ying sighed.
Ji Ying and Xu Qiexing were now officially at war, though neither had informed their families, both having coincidentally sent their parents off on vacations.
Xu Qiexing had considered whether to tell Xu Sangning and have her rein in Ji Ying. Despite being somewhat obtuse in certain areas, he could still sense the strange dynamic between the two.
But Xu Qiexing had too much pride. After considering that asking Xu Sangning for help might lead to years of mockery, he decided against it.
Some people noticed the tension between the Xu and Ji families and tried to gather information, only to find that Xu Sangning and Ji Ying still seemed on good terms. After much probing, they ended up more confused than ever.
In the end, they concluded it was probably just rich people being restless with too much money.
Xu Sangning had been idle lately. Ji Ying was working overtime, and apart from occasionally sending her meals when she had no classes, they hadn’t seen each other.
She sometimes went upstairs to play with Ji Xiaohei but rarely ran into Ji Ying. If not for the subtle changes in the apartment, she might have thought Ji Ying hadn’t come home at all.
She was naturally lazy, and Ji Ying had made her even lazier.
Today, Ji Ying left work early. After half a month of continuous overtime, she felt her soul was about to ascend. The only thing keeping her going was having the system send out her compensation claim emails.
Xu Qiexing was also extremely vindictive, going all out in retaliation—though, of course, she hadn’t held back either.
When she opened the door and saw the light in the living room, Ji Ying froze for a second. Hearing no sound, she carefully closed the door behind her.
Walking into the living room, she saw Xu Sangning lying on the sofa, with Ji Xiaohei curled up beside her head—both fast asleep.
Ji Ying paused, blinked, and couldn’t help but smile slightly. She spent 100 points to have the system take a photo she could keep.
System: Such a spendthrift. You barely have any points left, and you waste them on this?
Ji Ying: You don’t understand a damn thing. Do you know what it means to say ‘priceless moments of beauty’?
【System: I don’t get it. All I know is that I’ll have to help you write another eight hundred compensation requests.】
Ji Ying moved closer, intending to find a blanket for Xu Sangning. But when she was still three steps away, Xu Sangning’s eyes snapped open with sharp awareness.
Their gazes met. Ji Ying froze for a second. Even though she hadn’t done anything wrong, she inexplicably felt a little awkward.
“You’re back,” Xu Sangning said, rubbing her head. “I just wanted to lie down for a bit, but I ended up falling asleep. You’re home early today.”
“Yeah, wanted to sleep early. If I don’t, I might just drop dead,” Ji Ying replied. She had wanted to chat with Xu Sangning—after all, it was rare for them to cross paths—but before she could say anything else, a series of yawns overtook her, effectively cutting off whatever she’d planned to say.
Ji Ying: “……”
Xu Sangning chuckled and reached out to ruffle Xiao Hei’s head. “Get some rest. I’ll head out now.”
“Okay,” Ji Ying said, yawning again.
Xiao Hei blinked sleepily at the two of them, stretched lazily on the couch, and then closed his eyes contentedly.
“In a few days, when I’m not as busy… could you wait and have dinner with me?”
“A few days? By then, I’ll be preparing for finals. I’ll be swamped,” Xu Sangning replied apologetically.
Ji Ying’s vision darkened.
Why was her life so hard?
“Alright,” Ji Ying sighed.
Xu Sangning studied Ji Ying’s expression and hesitated for a few seconds. “After my exams, I’ll come visit you at the company.”
“Okay.” Ji Ying’s face instantly brightened, and she happily walked Xu Sangning to the door.
【System: Ji Ying, you know, if you had a tail right now, it’d probably be wagging.】
【Ji Ying: A puppy? Or maybe a kitten—she’d definitely hold me in her arms and kiss me. She’s pretty lazy, though, so she probably wouldn’t take me out for walks. Without exercise, I might get fat, and then she wouldn’t be able to lift me anymore.】
The system realized it truly struggled to keep up with its host’s train of thought.
【System: You’re insane!】
