What to Do, I've Been Targeted by the Villain Again [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 25
Xu Sangning glanced at Ji Tangmian and took a few steps to the side, putting some distance between them.
Ji Tangmian looked back at Xu Sangning with a hint of grievance in her eyes before pitifully lowering her head.
“She’s pretending to be pitiful again.”
“How dare she act like that! She’s gotten several of us killed along the way. We shouldn’t have let her tag along—she’s nothing but bad luck.”
“Who told her to be a healer? Ugh, it’s so annoying that someone so useless ended up with healing powers.”
Whispers spread among the group.
Xu Sangning glanced at Ji Tangmian once more and took the opportunity during their break to review the entire script.
The female lead, Su Mo, grew up in an orphanage in a small town. Life there taught her that if she wanted something good, she had to fight for it—falling behind meant going hungry. When the apocalypse arrived, she quickly adapted to its brutal rules.
She trusted no one, but her formidable abilities naturally drew followers. To secure resources, she eventually formed her own team, bowing to popular demand. Su Mo’s rising influence in the base made the base leader fear a power grab, prompting him to plot her assassination—only for her to turn the tables and kill him instead. After the internal strife, she took full control of the base.
The male lead, Lin Yi, had minimal presence throughout the book. To the base’s inhabitants, he was little more than Su Mo’s kept man—and in truth, the rumors weren’t far off. Lin Yi’s ability was purely altruistic: staying near him allowed other ability users to naturally grow stronger. After Su Mo discovered his power, she imprisoned him by her side.
Of course, Lin Yi wasn’t exactly mentally stable either. He was more than willing to be confined—he reveled in being controlled by Su Mo. The moment he saw her with bl00d splattered across her face while executing a traitor, he fell in love at first sight.
The romance in this book revolved around an extremely controlling woman and a masochist.
Ji Tangmian was Su Mo’s college classmate, though their relationship had always been lukewarm. Still, after discovering Ji Tangmian had awakened healing abilities, Su Mo brought her along.
Ji Tangmian’s character was both foolish and malicious, holding grudges over the slightest offenses. At first, she unintentionally caused many deaths, but upon realizing she was the base’s only healer, she grew tyrannical, eliminating anyone who opposed her. Because Su Mo frequently defied her, Ji Tangmian eagerly participated in the old base leader’s plot to kill Su Mo. Later, when Su Mo found a way to strip abilities, Ji Tangmian was thrown into a horde of zombies after losing hers.
In the book, Xu Sangning survived for two months. Ji Tangmian lasted six.
Xu Sangning didn’t know what to say. She looked over at Ji Tangmian, who happened to be sneaking glances at her. Noticing Xu Sangning’s gaze, Ji Tangmian immediately grinned.
Perhaps to fit this world’s setting, Ji Tangmian’s face was slightly rounder than in the last world, making her smile seem dopey.
Xu Sangning couldn’t understand why, across so many small worlds, the two of them kept running into each other.
She lowered her head and nibbled on her bread.
The story had just begun—they were currently following Su Mo’s team to the Eastern Base.
Xu Sangning glanced at Su Mo in the distance. The woman sat on the windowsill, gazing outside. Lin Yi lingered nearby, watching her with infatuation in his eyes. Before Su Mo discovered Lin Yi’s usefulness, the two mostly maintained this dynamic.
Su Mo knew Lin Yi was looking at her, but she couldn’t care less. Lin Yi was good-looking, but in the apocalypse, good looks weren’t of much use—at least not to Su Mo.
To Su Mo, Lin Yi couldn’t even compare to Ji Tangmian.
Lin Yi was just a useless waste who knew how to eat, while Ji Tangmian was a slightly more useful waste—even if she had a tendency to get people killed.
Xu Sangning withdrew her gaze and stuffed the remaining bread into her mouth.
Ji Tangmian glanced at Su Mo, then at Xu Sangning, frowning slightly.
Ji Tangmian: Why is she staring at Su Mo?
System: Maybe she likes the heroine’s type.
Ji Tangmian: Nonsense.
Ji Tangmian quietly shifted her position, moving closer to Xu Sangning again.
Xu Sangning: “…”
Ji Tangmian wanted to get even closer, but after a single glance from Xu Sangning, she froze in place.
System: Host, your courage is smaller than an ant’s.
Ji Tangmian: Screw off.
Once the break was over, Ji Tangmian seized the opportunity to claim the spot next to Xu Sangning.
“Big sis, you don’t mind if I squeeze in with you, right?” Ji Tangmian said, leaning against Xu Sangning.
“Green tea b1tch,” someone behind them sneered without hesitation, rolling their eyes at Ji Tangmian. “You should be sitting on the roof—stop trying to get us killed.”
Ji Tangmian pouted, feigning hurt. “I already said it wasn’t on purpose! Zombies are terrifying! You guys are brave, but I’m not! If I weren’t this cowardly, I might not have even awakened my healing ability!”
“Hmph.”
Ji Tangmian blinked at Xu Sangning, then secretly scratched her palm.
Xu Sangning instinctively gripped Ji Tangmian’s fingers, giving them a warning squeeze before letting go. She placed her hands on her knees and turned to look out the window.
Ji Tangmian: That was flirting.
System: More like you’re delusional.
Ji Tangmian sighed. Why had she even bothered talking to the system?
Xu Sangning stared out the window.
This place had once been a famous commercial district before the apocalypse, but now it was pure chaos. The lively crowds had turned into grotesque zombies, and the roads were littered with wrecked cars.
Xu Sangning spotted the bodies of those who hadn’t turned into zombies but had died in accidents. She exhaled slowly.
Even through the glass, the stench outside seemed to seep in. Everything reeked of impending doom.
The convoy moved slowly. With most ability users still at low levels, clearing the path was a sluggish process.
Xu Sangning hadn’t awakened her ability yet—she would unlock her water-based powers tomorrow night during a zombie ambush.
The scenes outside were too grim, leaving everyone in silence.
Ji Tangmian wanted to talk to Xu Sangning, but in the confined space of the vehicle, any private conversation would be too obvious. Plus, too many people in the car disliked her—even the slightest movement from her drew irritated glances.
The next night, the group rested outside the city.
Xu Sangning lay with her eyes closed but couldn’t sleep. At two in the morning, she opened her eyes and turned her head—only to find Ji Tangmian staring back at her with wide, unblinking eyes. Clearly, Ji Tangmian wasn’t asleep either. Then, without a sound, Ji Tangmian grinned like an idiot.
The two exchanged a glance before looking out the window. A dark mass of zombies was approaching, appearing especially terrifying under the cold moonlight.
They closed their eyes again, only opening them when the night watchman’s shouts startled them awake.
The convoy surged forward, with those at the front struggling to clear a path. But their abilities were too weak, and the number of zombies too overwhelming—breaking through seemed impossible. The zombies blocked their escape with their bodies.
The vehicles were forced to stop. An unarmored car ahead had its windows shattered by the zombies, and screams pierced through the glass, reaching their ears.
Xu Sangning and the others covered their mouths tightly, not daring to make a sound. The people inside the car trembled, shaking the entire vehicle. In the darkness, Xu Sangning could almost hear the chattering of teeth.
Ji Tangmian pretended to be frightened, leaning against Xu Sangning and burying her head in her shoulder.
Trapped inside the car, they were like lambs waiting for slaughter, powerless to resist, as if death was their only fate.
The zombies circled the vehicle, their rotting faces pressed grotesquely against the glass. Disgusting maggots crawled from one eye socket to another.
One zombie slammed into the glass, and the man in the driver’s seat screamed uncontrollably, covering his head—he thought the window had broken, but it hadn’t. Yet his screams drew more zombies.
Hearing the commotion, the zombies gathered, slamming against the windows one after another. They felt no pain, relentlessly battering the glass.
Uncontrollable sobs filled the car—someone had started crying.
At the critical moment before the glass shattered, Xu Sangning stretched out her hand. A jet of water burst from her palm, knocking the zombies back. She exhaled in relief.
Meanwhile, Su Mo at the front finally broke through his limits, unleashing his power. A row of zombies was crushed into pulp by an invisible force.
Xu Sangning lowered her hand, relieved.
Those filthy things had almost exploded on her—thankfully, she’d reacted in time to create a water shield.
Xu Sangning stepped out of the car to help clear the remaining zombies. She passed the vehicles that had been breached by the undead, not looking inside. The lingering stench of bl00d told the whole story.
When they set off again, four cars’ worth of people were missing. After narrowly escaping danger and silently weeping, only despair for the future and numbness in the face of death remained.
“Wow, you have an ability too!” Ji Tangmian’s cheerful voice clashed with the heavy atmosphere in the car.
“Yeah.”
“A water-based ability! You’ll never have to worry about drinking water again.” Ji Tangmian looked at Xu Sangning. “How about I heal you for free, and you give me water?”
“Deal,” Xu Sangning nodded.
“Can you shut up? You’re so annoying!” the person in the passenger seat snapped at Ji Tangmian.
Ji Tangmian pursed her lips. “This isn’t your car! Why are you yelling at me? My voice is way quieter than your shouting. If you get hurt by a zombie later, don’t come crying to me!”
“Hah, if you refuse to heal us, we might as well kill you! If it weren’t for your healing, who’d want you around?”
“I was just talking! You’re so unreasonable!” Ji Tangmian crossed her arms. “I’m telling Su Mo about this later!”
“Hah, you think Su Mo cares about you?”
Ji Tangmian stared fixedly at the back of the person’s head, then lowered her gaze and fell silent. It was clear this individual had just made it onto her death list.
“They’re so damn annoying, they really deserve to die,” Ji Tangmian whispered, leaning against Xu Sangning.
Xu Sangning looked down at Ji Tangmian. This time, she was maintaining her character setting quite well—though she didn’t respond to the remark.
She wasn’t exactly a good person either, but she wouldn’t show it so blatantly.
After all, her character wasn’t stupid.
