What to Do, I've Been Targeted by the Villain Again [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 27
Xu Sangning looked at Ji Tangmian.
Just accompanying Ji Tangmian out the door was enough.
Yet for Ji Tangmian, it seemed that as long as Xu Sangning was by her side, she was happy.
So easily satisfied.
It had been the same in the previous world.
But back then, Xu Sangning had waited outside for so long, and Ji Tangmian never reached out to her.
Based on Ji Tangmian’s behavior, she must have recognized Xu Sangning.
Had something delayed her?
Xu Sangning took a sip of her drink and exhaled softly.
Honestly, why was she even making excuses for Ji Tangmian now?
And of all places, Ji Tangmian had to choose the most inconvenient spot for a conversation… Xu Sangning swirled her cup.
She really wanted to yank out whatever was in Ji Tangmian’s head and ask what was going on.
Xu Sangning quietly watched Ji Tangmian. Noticing the gaze, Ji Tangmian subtly turned her face, presenting her best angle in an attempt to dazzle Xu Sangning.
But Xu Sangning averted her eyes, clearly missing the intention.
The hotpot meal lasted two hours. Afterward, Xu Sangning took a long, soothing hot shower.
Water usage was restricted for most, but not for Ji Tangmian. Xu Sangning was essentially freeloading—though on second thought, now that she was a water-type ability user, with enough practice, she could conjure hot water herself.
Even though she had just arrived in this world, Xu Sangning felt as if she hadn’t bathed in ages, making the hot shower all the more satisfying.
She changed into a practical tracksuit and left with Ji Tangmian.
They lived on the eighth floor. The elevator had long stopped working, so they had to take the stairs.
Ji Tangmian usually hated climbing stairs, but with Xu Sangning beside her, even this mundane task became enjoyable.
“Should we take a stroll around the base later?”
“Better not.”
Just from the eighth floor to the first, Xu Sangning had already caught a few disdainful glares. Wandering around the base, she worried they might get jumped. Given their current reputations, they’d only be on the receiving end of a beating.
Ji Tangmian’s storyline had started half a month earlier than hers, but in just that short time, she had managed to earn the dislike of so many people—quite the talent.
And it was clear Ji Tangmian relished the whole “you hate me but can’t do anything about it” persona.
Downstairs, Ji Tangmian wheeled out her personal bicycle. The two exchanged a glance.
In the end, Xu Sangning took the initiative, pushing the bike while Ji Tangmian happily climbed onto the back, wrapping her arms around Xu Sangning’s waist.
Ji Tangmian: Quick, take a photo! Capture this beautiful moment!
System: Couldn’t you spend your points on something actually useful?
Ji Tangmian: The most useful thing is already bought.
Ji Tangmian leaned against Xu Sangning’s back, her cheek nuzzling lightly against it.
System: 6.
System: You remind me of a saying—’We had no fate, until I paid for it.’
Ji Tangmian: What nonsense! We were always fated! Shut up! Mute! Mute!
The center of the base wasn’t far from where Ji Tangmian lived. Taking a shortcut by bike would only take five minutes. But since Xu Sangning was worried about getting ambushed, she opted for the main road instead, stretching the trip to fifteen minutes.
“Ji Tangmian: Look, she took the long way around. She must think riding bikes like this is so romantic, hehe.”
The system didn’t think so, but it stayed silent, afraid of being scolded if it disagreed.
It genuinely believed that Ji Tangmian could conjure up an epic love story all on her own, without even needing Xu Sangning to respond.
When they arrived at the base’s central building, Xu Sangning parked her bike and looked up to see Ji Tangmian’s flushed face.
At first, she thought it was from the wind, but the dreamy look in Ji Tangmian’s eyes made it clear that wasn’t the case.
So, what exactly had Ji Tangmian been fantasizing about in those short ten minutes?
Xu Sangning waited downstairs while Ji Tangmian went up alone.
Since the plot point of tattling didn’t involve her, Ji Tangmian didn’t insist she come along.
Leaning against the bike with her hands in her pockets, Xu Sangning stared into the distance, lost in thought.
Days without missions in the apocalypse were incredibly dull.
“Xu Sangning?”
She turned her head toward the approaching voice.
The face was familiar, but not someone she knew well.
“Are you planning to stick with Ji Tangmian from now on?” the group asked politely.
“You’ll still need her for healing later. Why make things so tense?” Xu Sangning offered a gentle smile—one that made it hard to believe the person behind it would use others as human shields. “Even if she’s obligated by the base to treat the injured, she could still make things difficult.”
“So, you’re just going along with her?”
“That’s a bit harsh. We’re just living together. It’s not like we’re actively causing trouble for everyone.”
“Besides, I just want everyone to coexist peacefully. You’re all here because you want to survive. Why risk your lives over petty grudges?” Xu Sangning’s tone remained calm the entire time.
They were angry, but they couldn’t direct it at Xu Sangning. Deep down, they knew she was right. Even if they lashed out at Ji Tangmian now, they’d still have to go to her eventually.
In a base of nearly ten thousand people, she was the only one—one in ten thousand. That statistic made Ji Tangmian irreplaceable.
“Why did it have to be her with the healing ability…?”
“I think Ji Tangmian is just immature. She’s still young. I believe people are inherently good. If everyone treats her kindly, maybe she’ll change?” Xu Sangning smiled like a saint. “I just want to be the mediator.”
They thought Xu Sangning was a bit naive, but their impression of her shifted from “a bootlicker clinging to power” to “a naive saint trying to redeem a villain.” Their gazes even held a hint of admiration.
“She’s just scared,” Xu Sangning sighed. “Maybe she’ll grow out of it? Earlier, on our way back, we ran into a horde of zombies. Someone on the bike screamed. If I hadn’t suddenly awakened my ability, we would’ve died there. So, screaming in fear is actually pretty normal.”
“If Ji Tangmian had died there…” Xu Sangning looked at them, leaving the sentence hanging. Their expressions darkened.
As much as they disliked Ji Tangmian, they didn’t actually want her dead.
“So, let’s all focus on training and improving our abilities. That way, we won’t panic the next time something unexpected happens.”
“Xu Sangning, you really are… radiating saintly light.”
Xu Sangning chuckled. “I’m not. I just can’t change others, so I focus on changing myself.”
“What you said makes sense, but you should still be careful. Everyone who walked with Ji Tangmian before has already died,” the other person finally warned.
“Next time I’ll stay by her side and try to cover her mouth before she even opens it,” Xu Sangning joked.
A few people laughed along with her.
Xu Sangning watched them leave and leaned back against her bicycle, spacing out again. This time, no one came to talk to her.
The system, having observed the entire scene, couldn’t help but marvel—she had fooled them so effortlessly.
If Xu Sangning and Ji Tangmian were to team up for mischief, and without the constraints of the script, who would even realize something was off? They’d probably end up thanking her for being such a “kind-hearted” person.
But honestly, since Ji Tangmian liked Xu Sangning, the system couldn’t help but feel that Xu Sangning wasn’t exactly a saint either.
Ji Tangmian, having finished her dramatic and emotional complaint session, quickly emerged and happily ran toward her.
“Xu Sangning!” Ji Tangmian called out as she approached.
“Let’s go,” Xu Sangning pushed her bicycle forward. “Did anyone give you trouble just now? If so, I can go back and complain again—it’s no big deal.”
“No need. If we dawdle any longer, it’ll be dark.”
“Alright.” Ji Tangmian climbed onto Xu Sangning’s bike. “If anyone bullies you, just tell me. I can strut around the base without any issues.”
“Got it.”
Ji Tangmian wrapped her arms around Xu Sangning’s waist again. “It’d be nice if we could take a ride around the base.”
“Too tired to pedal.”
Xu Sangning’s current body wasn’t particularly strong. While her abilities would enhance her physical condition, the effects weren’t immediate.
“Ah, right, I forgot about that… I could ride instead if you want?”
“Just focus on going back to sleep.”
“Fine.” Ji Tangmian sighed in disappointment. “The sunset is so beautiful—it’d be perfect for a stroll.”
The system, ever so considerate, helpfully—and free of charge—snapped a photo of the zombies outside the base and sent it to Ji Tangmian.
Ji Tangmian: “…”
