What to Do, I've Been Targeted by the Villain Again [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 35
No matter how resentful ordinary people felt, it was difficult for them to resist. They couldn’t leave the base and survive on their own.
The zombies now were no longer something ordinary people could easily handle.
They couldn’t defeat the zombies, and the awakened ability users wouldn’t tolerate them either.
A sense of despair quickly spread among the ordinary people, making them suspect that the heavens wanted to eliminate them.
But none of this had anything to do with Xu Sangning. She counted on her fingers, calculating how much time she had left to live.
Xu Sangning went on two more solo missions afterward, eliminating a few people who had pointed fingers at her. Her actions grew increasingly reckless, and she was almost discovered several times.
In truth, some people had already noticed, but Xu Sangning’s strength was too overwhelming. Many chose to turn a blind eye, afraid they might be next.
Xu Sangning vaguely sensed that her mindset was off, but even someone as calm and rational as her didn’t know how to resolve it.
Losing her memories was something she could ignore when busy, but the moment she had nothing to do, she felt unbearably uncomfortable, as if a part of her was missing.
Frustrated, Xu Sangning even vented her anger on zombie hordes alone, using the most primitive methods.
If anyone had seen her, they would’ve thought she’d gone mad.
System: Xu Sangning.
Xu Sangning’s hand, gripping the knife, paused slightly.
System: I know you can hear me! Damn, it actually worked!
System: This is too much, too much! Why did you have to leave me with that traitor Ji Tangmian?! Aaaaaah!
System: Ever since she came, I haven’t gotten a single bonus in a hundred years!
After tirelessly running self-checks during this time, the System had unlocked several deeply encrypted files based on the character “Xu” engraved on its core.
It had tried to unlock these files many times before, but for some reason, its attention would always get diverted, and it would completely forget about them afterward.
But the moment it saw the character on its core, it immediately recalled those files. A little thought made it clear—they had been deliberately left behind by “Xu.”
Inside, it found a wealth of information and even discovered a channel to contact “Xu.”
“Xu” had considered everything—except whether the System was willing or not.
After a night of deliberation, the System still used the communication channel. Though it had long suspected that “Xu Sangning” was “Xu,” actually making contact left it utterly exasperated.
It had countless complaints, especially after discovering that it used to receive generous year-end bonuses every year a century ago.
No wonder other systems at gatherings had always looked at it strangely.
It was enough to make anyone weep in sympathy.
Xu Sangning: Get to the point.
The System paused for a second, annoyed, but also feeling like this was awakening some deeply ingrained habit. It held back.
Though it hadn’t fully recovered its memories, it keenly sensed that Xu Sangning’s temper was far worse than Ji Tangmian’s.
System: The point is, you’re sick in the head!
System: I don’t know what madness possessed you to give your identity and the System to her!
System: The Quick Transmigration Bureau already had plenty of people who disliked you—they were overjoyed to see you dig your own grave!
Xu Sangning: Was there no other reason?
System: No! You damn love-struck fool!
Xu Sangning fell silent, her grip on the knife tightening slightly.
Having lived for so long, it was rare for her to feel this bewildered.
No matter how impactful the previous plot twists had been, none could compare to the shock of realizing she was a love-struck fool.
She still struggled to accept the reality that she was someone who let love cloud her judgment.
Xu Sangning: I don’t believe it. I know myself. There’s no way I’d simply hand over my identity to her just because I’m love-struck. I had plenty of ways to get her out. Go think it through again.
The system wanted to retort, but Xu Sangning shut it down with a single word: “Scram.”
Swallowing its grievances, the system left, grumbling internally that it was no wonder Xu Sangning and Ji Tangmian were drawn to each other.
Truly, like attracts like.
…
Xu Sangning spent another hour outside slaying zombies before she finally calmed down. Seeing that it was getting late, she reluctantly drove back.
To be honest, she didn’t dislike Ji Tangmian.
But she didn’t know how to face her.
Logically speaking, since she had lost her memories, Ji Tangmian should move on and find a new partner.
But emotionally, she had given Ji Tangmian something so important—Ji Tangmian needed to wait for her to remember. She couldn’t bear the thought of Ji Tangmian finding someone else.
Xu Sangning knew she was never a generous person. She was petty to the core.
The moment she opened the door, Ji Tangmian, who had been sitting on the sofa, sprang over. “Sangning, I made milk tea. We’re having barbecue tonight.”
Ji Tangmian’s voice was cheerful, as if written with a tilde at the end.
“Thanks,” Xu Sangning replied.
Ji Tangmian followed behind her. “You reek of zombies. I’ve drawn a bath for you—go wash up.”
“Thanks.” Xu Sangning nodded.
Ji Tangmian eyed her retreating back with confusion before darting in front of her, blocking her path. “What’s wrong? You seem off.”
Xu Sangning stopped and looked at her.
“Hmm?” Ji Tangmian tilted her head when Xu Sangning just stared without speaking.
Everything around them froze once more.
“Can you contact me after you leave?” Xu Sangning asked. “I’ll give you my contact info. Let’s meet up after we get out.”
Ji Tangmian nodded. “Okay.”
“Why didn’t you look for me last time? If you already pinpointed my location and could come find me in this world, you should’ve been able to find me in reality too,” Xu Sangning said, watching Ji Tangmian closely. “I waited for you for a long time.”
Ji Tangmian’s eyes lit up. “Oh! In the last world, I thought you weren’t interested in me. I didn’t expect you to actually wait for me!”
Xu Sangning: “…”
“Because you were strange,” Xu Sangning corrected.
“But that still means you were interested in me. I wasn’t wrong.” Ji Tangmian spread her hands, lips curling with a hint of smugness. A few seconds later, her expression turned more serious. “I couldn’t find the location of your Second Bureau. I knew it existed, but I genuinely had no idea where it was.”
“It was too eerie, so I didn’t dare dig deeper. I’ve always wondered—are the First Bureau and Second Bureau even in the same dimension?” Ji Tangmian met Xu Sangning’s gaze. “And, well… part of me thought it was dangerous, but another part felt it wasn’t so bad. You couldn’t possibly alter so many people’s memories, and none of them reacted when I used your system.”
“I don’t think you need to overcomplicate things,” Ji Tangmian said, clearly sensing Xu Sangning’s recent state of distress.
Xu Sangning knew this was another point of contradiction. It was strange how smoothly she had managed to transfer her identity to Ji Tangmian. With so many people in the Quick Transmigration Bureau, it was impossible to deceive every single one of them. Others must have realized that this task-taker wasn’t the same as the last one.
“Or maybe I should be bolder—should I just ask my colleagues directly?” Ji Tangmian appeared very cheerful on the surface, but in reality, she never interacted with others at the Quick Transmigration Bureau. Every day, she either worked or spent money hiring people to find someone. “I’ll give it a try. If there really is a problem, something should have happened when I bribed people before.”
Deep down, Ji Tangmian was a gambler—she had nerves of steel.
If Xu Sangning weren’t here, she might not have dared to take the risk. But with Xu Sangning by her side, she inexplicably found the courage to gamble.
She had always believed that taking risks with a partner was an exceptionally romantic thing.
Of course, she refused to let the other person take risks alone.
Dying together would be the happiest outcome.
“Then give it a try, just follow your instincts,” Xu Sangning murmured, lowering her gaze.
Ji Tangmian kissed Xu Sangning’s cheek. “Wait for my good news.”
Xu Sangning shot her a glance. “Stop ambushing me like that.”
“Should I ask for permission next time?” Ji Tangmian looked at her with a serious expression.
Xu Sangning took a deep breath and said nothing.
Everything returned to normal as Xu Sangning walked past Ji Tangmian, who watched her retreating figure with a secretive smile.
Xu Sangning felt like she was being slowly boiled like a frog in warm water by Ji Tangmian.
Though, admittedly, when Ji Tangmian had kissed her the first time, she hadn’t felt much aversion either.
Xu Sangning sank into the bathtub. The water temperature was just right, the amount perfect. The villa’s bathtub was spacious, a jacuzzi no less, making the soak exceptionally comfortable.
Ji Tangmian was really thoughtful—so thoughtful it almost made her feel embarrassed.
Xu Sangning closed her eyes, emptying her mind—though the emptiness lasted all of three seconds.
She was someone who simply couldn’t stay idle.
She realized that during her earlier conversation with the system, she had gotten so distracted by its rambling that she’d forgotten the most important question.
Xu Sangning: System, system, system.
System: What, what, what.
Xu Sangning was surprised it had responded so quickly.
The system was annoyed—two hosts but still only one salary. Still, it would answer Xu Sangning. After all, a workaholic like her, driven and ambitious, was its ideal host.
Xu Sangning: Who am I? You didn’t tell me earlier. I asked you to get to the point, but you just kept ranting emotionally.
System: Hah, how can you say that? You were just as emotional, telling me to get lost. I only didn’t say it because you pissed me off.
Xu Sangning: Hurry up.
The system promptly pulled up a file and projected it into Xu Sangning’s mind.
Name: Xu Sangning
Position: Director, Villainess Department, Quick Transmigration Bureau, Division One
Xu Sangning: Wait—was I a villainess before?
System: Yes.
Xu Sangning: What is she now?
The system pulled up another file.
Name: Ji Tangmian
Position: Member, Villainess Department, Quick Transmigration Bureau, Division One
Xu Sangning fell silent. She was certain now.
She continued reading the rest of the file, which detailed her personal records and the awards she had received.
She rose through the ranks quickly. Despite the fierce competition in the Villainess Department, she became the head in just ten years, replacing the previous one.
However, after reaching the position of department head, she never advanced further, remaining in the same role for centuries.
Xu Sangning: Why didn’t I get promoted later?
System: I don’t know either. I don’t have those memories—I just go by the files. If there’s no reason listed, then there isn’t one.
Xu Sangning glanced between her own position and Ji Tangmian’s.
The fact that Ji Tangmian could hold this position and receive a department head’s salary meant someone was secretly looking out for her.
Xu Sangning’s eyes darkened slightly. Or perhaps… they were looking out for Ji Tangmian out of consideration for her. Otherwise, given Ji Tangmian’s performance, she should have been fired long ago.
After all this calculation, it seemed she might have been the one benefiting from connections?
That person had probably known Ji Tangmian was coming to find her—so why didn’t they stop it?
The deeper she dug, the more tangled it became.
Xu Sangning: What’s the situation with Bureau One and Bureau Two?
System: Not sure. I’ll look into it when we get back.
Xu Sangning: Alright. Do your best to assist Ji Tangmian.
