- Chapter 6 - Complementary
Ji Ying had indeed wanted to do it, but she sensed the rejection in Xu Sangning’s eyes and ultimately gave up.
Now, seeing each other once a week and sharing a meal together was enough for her—it was still better than before.
Xu Sangning had developed a habit of checking for feedback every day, but the lack of response made her feel as though the company had already gone bankrupt.
She sent a message asking if the company had shut down, and the group quickly replied with two words: “Not yet.”
But when she asked about Ji Ying again, there was no response.
Though she didn’t know exactly what was going on with Ji Ying, it was clear something was wrong.
Xu Sangning was a cautious person. To ensure a smooth promotion, she usually refrained from badmouthing the company. But now, her mind was flooded with curses for the Quick Transmigration Bureau—she was just a hair’s breadth away from openly venting her frustration.
The next day, Ji Ying didn’t show up. The other trainees were looking forward to it, though, since they’d get free drinks again and could return to their dorms early.
Xu Sangning called Xu Qiexing three days in advance, asking him to attend the university anniversary celebration.
Xu Qiexing hadn’t planned on going this year—it wasn’t a particularly special anniversary, after all.
“It’s my first time performing on stage in college, and you’re not coming?” Xu Sangning leaned against the railing, her tone accusatory.
“Performing?” Xu Qiexing set down his work. “What kind of performance?”
“Poetry recitation.”
Xu Qiexing fell silent for a few seconds before asking skeptically, “Are you short on credits?”
“Are you coming or not?!”
“No. Let Mom and Dad go.”
Xu Sangning took a deep breath. She hadn’t expected the school celebration to be the sticking point with Xu Qiexing.
“I asked you three days in advance—I’ve never been this considerate before,” she said darkly.
“Then ask Ji Ying to go. Aren’t you and Ji Ying on good terms lately?” To be honest, Xu Qiexing had been genuinely surprised when he found out. Ji Ying and Xu Sangning seemed like they came from completely different worlds, yet they’d somehow found common ground and become close friends.
Xu Sangning gritted her teeth. “Yeah, she’s not even my real sister, and she cares about me. But my own brother won’t come to my first college performance! Fine. If you don’t come, don’t expect peace for the next few months—I’ll post your childhood photos online.”
“And there’s that time in high school when you cried after Mom and Dad scolded you. I recorded it,” Xu Sangning added when Xu Qiexing didn’t respond.
Xu Qiexing: “…”
“Did you get into trouble at school?” He genuinely couldn’t understand why she was so insistent on him attending some random school event. Though he’d always thought his sister was a bit odd, this was a first.
After Xu Sangning turned eighteen, she’d started distancing herself from him, avoiding unnecessary interactions unless she needed something. Once the marriage alliance with the Ji family was proposed, she’d taken to following Ji Ying around.
“No! Clearly, you don’t wish me well at all,” Xu Sangning snapped. “You have to come. I’ll bring you the ticket when I go home on Saturday.”
Without waiting for Xu Qiexing’s refusal, she hung up and immediately called her mother to complain about Xu Qiexing’s accusation that she’d gotten into trouble. Her tone made it sound like Xu Qiexing had committed some unforgivable crime.
“I finally mustered the courage to step on stage and showcase myself, and he had to crush my enthusiasm, even accusing me of doing something bad at school. Am I that kind of person?”
“Mom, Xu Qiexing seriously damaged my confidence and ambition.”
“Alright, alright, I get it. I’ll talk to him for you.”
“Scold him, and remember to record it.”
“Okay.” Mother Xu chuckled softly. “Someone in their twenties still acting like this.”
“Just because I’m in my twenties doesn’t mean I can’t complain? Alright, Mom, I’ve got to go to class now.”
“Mm.” Mother Xu hung up the phone.
The next morning, Xu Sangning actually received the video Mother Xu had sent—her kicking Xu Qiexing twice.
No wonder Xu Qiexing had just sent her a sarcastic thumbs-up on WeChat.
Watching the video, she couldn’t help but burst into laughter, feeling much of the gloom from the past few days dissipate.
These days, male leads who get kicked around are truly rare, especially in old-school novels.
Xu Sangning really wanted to share the video and enjoy the spectacle with someone, but she couldn’t think of anyone.
She sighed.
Guess she really needed to focus on making money. Once she could afford an electronic pet, she’d have someone to chat with.
Glancing at the time, Xu Sangning hurried off to class.
On Saturday, Xu Sangning went back home and shoved the event ticket and the follow-up invitation from the school into Xu Qiexing’s hands. “I’ve already told the principal you’re definitely going. They’ve arranged a front-row seat for you.”
At that distance, he’d surely be able to see Feng Xingwei.
She felt that after this mission, the Quick Transmigration Bureau ought to give her a bonus and compensate her for emotional distress.
Xu Qiexing massaged his temples. “Got it.”
“It’s just a poetry recital.” He crossed his arms. “Do you want me to hire a photographer to take pictures for you?”
“That won’t be necessary. The school has its own photographers.” Xu Sangning smiled confidently. “I look flawless from every angle, so no need for a professional.”
Xu Qiexing pulled out his phone, snapped a random photo of Xu Sangning, and showed it to her. “Still room for improvement.”
“Mom!” Xu Sangning turned and shouted.
Xu Qiexing got kicked twice more.
This time, witnessing it live, Xu Sangning felt thoroughly satisfied.
“Enough fooling around. Ji Ying will be coming over for dinner soon,” Mother Xu said.
“What?” Xu Sangning spun around.
No wonder Ji Ying hadn’t asked her out for dinner today—he was planning to come here instead.
“What’s with that reaction, child?”
“Oh, just happy.” Professional worker Xu Sangning flashed a smile.
Xu Qiexing couldn’t shake the feeling that her expression looked utterly fake. “What, tired of seeing him every day? I never noticed you were so…”
He thought for a moment before landing on a word. “Shallow.”
Xu Sangning: ???
“How dare you call me that?” She rolled her eyes.
This guy wasn’t exactly a saint in the novel either. Though they hadn’t officially gotten engaged, the families had already agreed on an arranged marriage, and everyone treated him and Ji Ying as a couple. Yet he still went around flirting with the female lead.
“What’s wrong with me?” Xu Qiexing believed himself to be utterly blameless. “I’m at work every single day.”
“Can’t be bothered with you.” Not wanting to elaborate, Xu Sangning quickly headed upstairs.
Frowning, Xu Qiexing watched her retreating figure.
Back in her room, Xu Sangning shut the door, smacked her forehead, and went to the bathroom to splash cold water on her face, trying to clear her mind.
Slumping onto the sofa, she sent Ji Ying a message.
Xu Sangning: Why didn’t you tell me you were coming for dinner?
【Ji Ying: Got a surprise for you.】
Xu Sangning’s fingers flew across the screen as she typed out a few words, only to delete them one by one. In the end, she sent a spinning, jumping sticker instead.
Ji Ying watched as Xu Sangning spent ages typing, only to end up sending a sticker, and couldn’t help but laugh.
Just imagining Xu Sangning holding her breath while messaging her was enough to amuse her.
【Ji Ying: See you in a bit.】
【Xu Sangning: Mhm, mhm.】
Xu Sangning tossed her phone aside and sprawled lazily on the sofa.
Ji Ying arrived at half past five, bringing some food with her.
When Xu Sangning came downstairs, she saw Ji Ying and Xu Qiexing sitting at opposite ends of the room, with her parents occupying the long sofa in the middle. The four of them were chatting—about company matters, no less.
It looked less like a family conversation and more like some kind of business meeting.
“Sit next to me?” Ji Ying glanced at Xu Sangning.
“Sure.” Xu Sangning grinned and trotted over, plopping down beside Ji Ying.
“Brought you some milk tea.” Ji Ying handed her the cup from the coffee table. “And a little cake from K’s—you can have it as dessert after dinner.”
“Thanks, Ji Ying-jie.” Xu Sangning poked the straw into her milk tea and then settled in quietly, content to play the role of a decorative vase.
Xu Qiexing glanced at Xu Sangning, then at Ji Ying, whose expression had noticeably softened. He lowered his head and took a sip of water.
“You two seem to be getting along better and better these days.”
“Mhm. Sangning’s just adorable, after all.”
Xu Sangning shivered at Ji Ying’s gentle tone, shooting her a quick glance before lowering her head in feigned shyness.
“Hah.” Xu Qiexing scoffed.
Xu Sangning lifted her head to glare at him. “Got a problem, brother?”
“Nope.” Xu Qiexing leaned back against the sofa. “Just thought of something funny. And I’m a little curious—where exactly is this ‘adorable’ you speak of?”
Ji Ying gave him a puzzled look, about to say something, but after a couple of glances, she shut her mouth again. “Never mind.”
Xu Sangning tilted her head and let out an unapologetic laugh. Xu Qiexing felt like he’d just been insulted.
“A University’s anniversary celebration is on Monday. Did she give you tickets?” Xu Qiexing asked.
“She was worried it’d interfere with my work, so she didn’t let me go.” Ji Ying looked up. “Since going in the afternoon would mean working overtime at night.”
Xu Qiexing shot Xu Sangning a displeased look. “Hah. How considerate.”
“Yep.” Ji Ying nodded, her smile growing even more genuine.
Xu Sangning: “…”
Now this was the art of conversation.
She gave Ji Ying a speechless look. This woman really knew how to make herself happy.
“Do you want to go?” Xu Qiexing asked. If Ji Ying wanted to, he could conveniently dump the responsibility on her.
“I’ve already seen it.” Ji Ying turned to Xu Qiexing. “If she wants you to go, then go. You can’t just completely ignore your little sister.”
Xu Qiexing frowned. There was clearly a hidden meaning in her words. His mind raced for a moment before he realized—she was subtly mocking him for failing to see Xu Sangning’s so-called adorableness.
He couldn’t help but glance at Xu Sangning again. What kind of spell had she cast on Ji Ying?
Xu Sangning flashed him a smile, showing off all eight of her teeth.
Xu Qiexing couldn’t take it anymore and got up to head upstairs.
Between Xu Sangning’s direct jabs and Ji Ying’s veiled sarcasm, they really had it all covered.
Xu Sangning was already arrogant enough as it was, and now with Ji Ying shielding him like this, he’d probably think he could reach the heavens next. The mere thought gave him a headache. He glanced back and saw Ji Ying leaning in to whisper something to Xu Sangning, the expression on his face sending a chill down his spine.
When Ji Ying’s icy gaze swept over, he quickly turned away and hurried upstairs.
