- What to Do, I've Been Targeted by the Villain Again [Quick Transmigration]
- Chapter 9 - School Anniversary
Xu Sangning spent half an hour playing with Ji Xiaohei, making sure the kitten remembered her. After taking a sip of the water Ji Ying had poured for her, she excused herself, saying she still had homework to finish.
Ji Ying really wanted to walk Xu Sangning downstairs, but the latter politely declined while firmly closing the door behind her.
Ji Ying: “……”
She looked down at Ji Xiaohei sprawled on the sofa, belly up, and walked over only to find the kitten had already fallen asleep.
Unable to resist, she reached out and gently scratched its little belly.
——
Monday was the school anniversary, and the campus was bustling with various activities, canceling classes for the day.
Xu Sangning slept in until noon, then arrived punctually at the backstage of the auditorium to prepare.
She had arranged for a private makeup artist for her group’s performance, avoiding the long queues for the shared ones. Their makeup session went by quickly.
Thanks to Xu Sangning’s “contribution,” the others willingly offered her the most comfortable chair in the lounge. Without hesitation, Xu Sangning lazily leaned back into it.
“I ordered bubble tea. Can someone go pick it up later? I don’t feel like moving,” Xu Sangning said, waving her phone. “It should arrive in about three minutes.”
“We’ll go,” two girls near the door volunteered.
“Great. The last four digits of the order number are 8888,” Xu Sangning nodded.
“Of course, the young miss has a premium phone number. Hey, wanna play a game? I’ll carry you.”
“Sure.” Xu Sangning pulled out her phone.
While chaos reigned outside, their lounge remained an oasis of calm.
Since Xu Sangning’s performance was relatively dull, it was sandwiched between two more exciting acts.
Before stepping on stage, Xu Sangning confirmed that Xu Qiexing and Feng Xingwei were seated in their assigned spots—perfect.
Lifting the hem of her dress, she walked onto the stage. Down below, Xu Qiexing played the role of a supportive parent, dutifully raising his phone to record.
Xu Sangning suddenly regretted not forbidding him from filming beforehand.
As expected, the recitation performance didn’t draw much attention, and the applause afterward was sparse.
Xu Sangning didn’t mind. As long as she fulfilled her obligation, that was enough.
Humming to herself, she changed out of her costume and left. Following her prior arrangement with Ji Ying, she took a taxi to her company. On the way, she received a message from Xu Qiexing.
Xu Qiexing: I’m staying for dinner before leaving.
Xu Sangning: Oh, enjoy your meal. I’ve already left the school.
Xu Qiexing: ?
Xu Qiexing: You dragged me here to suffer, and now you’re ditching me?
Xu Sangning: If you’re shameless enough, you can leave too (smile).
Xu Qiexing took a deep breath and turned off his phone.
Xu Sangning sent Ji Ying a quick message to let her know she was on her way, then put her phone away.
According to the plot, Xu Qiexing should be bringing Feng Xingwei back to the company soon anyway.
Dinner? Yeah, right.
——
Knowing Xu Sangning was coming, Ji Ying quickly tidied up her office. She laid out snacks on the coffee table, arranged soft pillows and a blanket neatly on the sofa, and even prepared a charger and tablet.
If not for an upcoming meeting, she would’ve gone downstairs to greet her personally.
As soon as Xu Sangning stepped out of the car, she was met by Ji Ying’s assistant, whose beaming smile and overwhelming enthusiasm made her slightly uneasy.
“President Ji is in a meeting and might be an hour. The snacks on the table are all prepared for you, and the tablet has no password.”
“What would you like to drink? Milk tea, coffee, or orange juice—anything is fine. I’ll bring over a fruit platter for you later.”
“Orange juice, thanks.”
“Got it.”
Xu Sangning opened the tablet and glanced at it, surprised to find that all the video streaming apps had active memberships—purchased just today.
This person was unexpectedly thorough.
She found the variety show she’d been watching recently and lazily leaned back on the sofa.
Soon, someone brought over the fruit platter and juice. The platter was filled with seasonal fruits she liked, cut into neat, uniform pieces—very satisfying for someone with obsessive tendencies.
Admittedly, it was quite comfortable.
When Ji Ying pushed the door open, Xu Sangning realized she had already been there for over an hour.
“Sorry, I wanted to come down and get you myself, but the meeting ran long.”
“It’s just going upstairs—no need to fetch me.” Xu Sangning tugged at the blanket draped over her and yawned. “What time do you get off work?”
“Six.”
“Oh, half an hour left then.” Xu Sangning checked the time. “Perfect, I’ll finish this episode by then.”
She slumped back lazily.
Ji Ying looked at the work in front of her, then at Xu Sangning lounging on the sofa, hugging a pillow and occasionally laughing silently at the show.
As expected, she really hated working. She wished she could just curl up with Xu Sangning, watching variety shows and laughing together.
Ji Ying flipped open the file in her hands, scanned it, and frowned deeply before grabbing it and walking out.
She couldn’t swear in front of Xu Sangning—it’d ruin her image.
Before leaving, Ji Ying glanced back at Xu Sangning, who was so engrossed in the show she didn’t even look up.
She sighed. It had taken so much effort to convince Xu Sangning to come keep her company at work, yet they’d barely spent any time together.
“Call Wang Zhicheng up here. Is this how he half-asses his work? Is this even readable?” Ji Ying slammed the file onto the table, her face dark.
Hearing the noise, Xu Sangning glanced toward the door.
Huh. This Ji Ying was a bit more hot-tempered than the “Ji Ying” she knew. The original Ji Ying had a strong idol persona—she’d never make such a scene at the office, always adhering to the principle of “aloof elegance.”
But her subordinates didn’t seem to find it strange.
Guess people everywhere just accepted that work could drive you crazy.
Xu Sangning turned her attention back to the show.
Normally, Ji Ying wouldn’t leave the office until past nine, but because Xu Sangning was here, she clocked out right at six today. Leaving early didn’t mean she was off the hook—she took her work laptop and a stack of documents, clearly planning to continue at home.
“Maybe skip dinner? How late are you planning to work tonight?” Though she knew Ji Ying wouldn’t agree, Xu Sangning asked anyway.
“No!” Ji Ying refused firmly. Getting Xu Sangning to agree to this wasn’t easy for her. Realizing she’d sounded too intense, she softened her tone. “It’s fine. I work fast—even if we eat first, I can finish in two or three hours.”
“Then let’s just grab dinner and head back.” Seeing Ji Ying hesitate, Xu Sangning added, “I’m exhausted from the school anniversary today too.”
Xu Sangning finished speaking and covered her mouth, putting on an exaggerated show as she greeted them.
“Alright,” Ji Ying swallowed the words that had already reached the tip of her tongue. “Let’s just grab a quick bite near the neighborhood then.”
