 - Chapter 5 - The Down-Head Man?

Not far away, someone sitting inside a sleek Maybach was watching the whole scene unfold, getting fired up right along with it. Lin Heqi pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose and said to her assistant,
 “That pink-haired girl… she’s interesting.”
Secretary Zhang Chun instantly caught the meaning behind her boss’s words. He whipped open his laptop and started typing furiously.
“President Lin,” he reported after a few moments, “she’s from the Zhou family in Cangqiong Bay. Rumor has it she was switched at birth and only returned to the family a few years ago.”
“Switched at birth?” Lin Heqi raised an eyebrow in disbelief.
“Yes. There was even a big reunion banquet when she was brought home. But you were abroad at the time, so it’s no surprise you haven’t heard.”
Lin Heqi leaned back against the seat, but her eyes never left the alley where Zhou Luo was fighting.
Fierce as hell…
She reminded Lin a little of Diao Chan, the character she’d gone head-to-head with during a heated solo match the other day.
“Boss, should we… give her a hand?”
The moment Zhang Chun said it, he realized it was pointless because Lin Heqi had already shrugged off her suit jacket and was striding straight toward the fight.
Have you ever seen a woman who’s one meter eighty tall? With a six-pack? A walking Iron Barbie?
Out of the corner of her eye, Zhou Luo spotted a tall figure heading her way and instantly felt a chill. Great, she cursed inwardly, no magic settings in this damn story? If I could just cast Lightning Strike, I wouldn’t have to do all this the hard way. And now this, don’t tell me that’s one of their reinforcements!
With a loud bang, Lin Heqi kicked one of the thugs who had been about to sneak up behind Zhou Luo, sending her flying.
Up close, the pink-haired girl looked even more striking—delicate features, but that fragile-looking frame packed a punch. So the Zhou family’s daughter is this tough? Lin scanned the alley; there were easily a dozen of them. Even a professional fighter would have trouble holding their ground. But this girl? She was holding her own.
Dropping her curious gaze, Lin stepped in and “helped” Zhou Luo take care of the remaining punks.
“Thanks, man,” Zhou Luo said briefly, turning away with a casual flip of her ponytail. She didn’t even spare her a glance.
Lin Heqi blinked. “…Huh?” Just like that? She was gone? A single “thanks” and that was it?
*******
That night, as soon as Zhou Luo logged into her game, she received an invitation from Xiatóu Nán (Down-Head Man). She’d planned to ignore it, but since no one was home and she was bored anyway, she figured she might as well relax and play a few rounds.
As usual, she instantly locked in her favorite hero—Yao. Xiàtóu Nán picked the jungler, Dongfang Jing. Long legs, tall build… Zhou Luo stared at her screen for a moment. It really did remind her of that guy who helped her fight earlier.
They played with seamless coordination, moving as one without needing to chat. Zhou Luo was fully in the zone. Around the ten-minute mark, while they were fighting the dragon, Xiàtóu Nán suddenly sent a message:
“Do you know how to fight?”
Zhou Luo chuckled. Do I know how to fight?
After a pause, she typed back: “I can fight small monsters.”
(Stay in character, stay in character, she reminded herself.)
Then Xiàtóu Nán replied: “Little Yao, I got into a fight today…”
“???” Zhou Luo stared at the message. What a coincidence. She wanted to say she had been in a fight too but obviously, that wasn’t something she could just blurt out. After a moment of thought, she typed: “Did you win or lose?”
Lin Heqi didn’t answer that. Instead, she began to rant:
“Let me tell you, I met this girl today—completely ungrateful. I helped her out, and she just walked off without a word…”
Zhou Luo rolled her eyes at the screen. Just looking at that gamer ID, Xiàtóu Nán, she could already guess—guys who pick the flashiest characters usually look the roughest in real life.
Still, she couldn’t deny it. They’d played together a long time, and aside from that one time he sniped her with Baili, he’d been a decent teammate.
So she typed back: “Yeah, that girl sounds rude. You helped her and she didn’t even thank you?”
There was a short pause.
“…Well,” Lin Heqi replied, “she did say thank you.”
“Maybe she’s just a bit shy, so she didn’t invite you to dinner to thank you again~”
On the other end of the line, Lin Heqi laughed. Feeling playful, she decided to tease Zhou Luo a little more. “Next time, Diao Chan will carry me.”
Oh, she just had to bring that up!!!
Zhou Luo stared at the screen for a long time. The memory of that disastrous match as Diao Chan was still painfully fresh. Was this woman trying to make her relive the trauma?!
Without hesitation, she switched lanes and went with the marksman.
Lin Heqi froze. After three thousand duo games together, the little rascal actually ditched her?!
“Come back!”
“You’re being such a downer!!!” Zhou Luo fired back.
“???” Lin Heqi blinked. Did that brat just insult me? So much for the 1,688-yuan gift! No gratitude at all. She silently decided she’d send two more skins later just to see what happened.
While the marksman mindlessly charged ahead, Lin Heqi took top lane. Down below, Zhou Luo and the marksman pushed all the way to the enemy high ground. The enemy’s vision vanished — clearly, they were setting up an ambush. Zhou Luo frantically hit the retreat button, but the marksman refused to budge.
Zhou Luo was speechless. Great. One of us is dying for sure. She wanted to retreat but worried the marksman would start whining again.
Sure enough, the enemies pounced. The marksman died instantly, and Zhou Luo was forced into her deer spirit form.
Perfect. A double kill gift-wrapped for the enemy!
Across the screen, Lin Heqi’s lips curved into a grin. Whether it was smug or not, who could say? But she dashed across half the map toward Zhou Luo’s location.
At the last possible second, she possessed the Mirror of the East, using her ultimate to teleport and pull Zhou Luo out of danger.
“Cool move, right?” she asked.
“So-so.” Zhou Luo replied flatly.
Tch. The only thing working on that girl is her mouth!
When the match ended, Lin Heqi really did send over two crystal gifts. She waited expectantly for the little brat’s usual shower of compliments yet this time, nothing. Zhou Luo accepted them like it was the most natural thing in the world.
That threw Lin Heqi off. Usually, whenever she gifted a skin, the brat would go on for ages, singing her praises.
And saving her across half the map like just now? Normally, the kid would’ve been squealing into the mic for at least five minutes…
Weirdly enough, Zhou Luo hadn’t used voice chat the last two games. Before, she was always chatty and talkative to the point of being noisy.
Now she just seemed… down.
Lin Heqi did her best to carry her each match, dominating the battlefield and hoping it would cheer her up.
But something was definitely different this time.
“Are you really the little rascal?” Lin Heqi finally typed.
Zhou Luo stared at the message for a long while. Then, after a quiet pause, she exited the game.
On Lin Heqi’s screen, the message went unanswered. A moment later — offline.
When she came back to her senses, Lin Heqi couldn’t help but laugh softly. What a stupid question.
After logging off, her assistant Zhang Chun entered with a folder in hand with documents related to the Lin family’s second young master.
“President Lin,” Zhang Chun said, “the chairman hired someone to check the Second Young Master’s birth compatibility. Here’s the other party’s information…”
As he handed it over, he stole a glance at Lin Heqi. For some reason, he had a bad feeling about this.
