- Chapter 6 - The Beating
“Matching birth charts?”
Lin Heqi thought she had misheard. What, are we abandoning science now and turning to fortune-telling?
“Wait—why are they suddenly matching his birth charts? The second young master’s fine, isn’t he?”
Zhang Chun replied, “For an engagement.”
“Engagement?!” Lin Heqi gave a disbelieving laugh. With that second brother’s reputation, which family would willingly marry their daughter to him?
As she spoke, she flipped open the file in her hands and as her eyes moved down the page, the expression on her face slowly hardened.
“If I remember right… she just finished her college entrance exams, didn’t she?” Her tone grew dark, her eyes sharp as blades.
Zhang Chun nodded. “Yes.”
“The Zhou family’s been doing well these past two years, but they still haven’t made any real breakthroughs. The second Lin’s infamous, and yet the Zhous are actually sending their own daughter to marry him off. Zhou Congwen’s really willing to make that sacrifice.”
“Well, you know what they say, can’t catch a wolf without giving up the lamb.” Zhang Chun muttered, sneaking another glance at Lin Heqi from the corner of his eye.
She wasn’t usually the type to meddle in family business. Today she’d already gone out of her way to help someone in a fight, and now she looked downright annoyed about this engagement news.
Could it be… her preferences aren’t quite…
Zhang Chun’s gossiping mind started spinning.
It did kind of make sense. What kind of proper young lady carried herself like that? Sitting there now, if she didn’t speak, no one would even guess she was a woman.
“I’d suggest you keep your curiosity to yourself,” Lin Heqi said coolly, closing the folder. She waved him off, signaling he could leave.
That pink-haired kid… does she even know what’s about to happen to her?

Meanwhile, at the Zhou household.
Shen Jinling had been lying in the hospital for over a week, her lips were so swollen that they’d shed three layers of skin.
Though Zhou Man despised her mother’s temper, she still forced herself to stay and take care of her.
Wu Beibei and the others hadn’t done their job properly, but at least they’d managed to keep Zhou Luo occupied. Otherwise, wouldn’t that girl be showing off by now?
Still, Shen Jinling wasn’t too pleased with Zhou Man’s performance either. Every time Zhou Man entered the hospital room, she was wrapped up so tightly that Shen Jinling’s heart started racing with unease, no matter how much she tried to favor her.
Even so, she still preferred Zhou Man over Zhou Luo. That ungrateful brat hadn’t shown her face once since the incident.
Worse yet — that morning, while watching TV, Shen Jinling nearly spat bl00d. Zhou Luo had actually appeared on television, with that ridiculous pink hair, boldly declaring she would get into Qingbei University! The entire ward burst out laughing.
Why doesn’t she just ascend to heaven while she’s at it?!
The Zhou family’s reputation had never been so humiliated. Shen Jinling had originally planned to summon Zhou Luo to serve her after being discharged, but after that TV stunt, she decided against it. She didn’t want anyone knowing she had such a shameful daughter.
When she was finally discharged, Zhou Congwen came to pick her up. The moment they arrived home, Shen Jinling demanded that Zhou Luo to kneel….and began cursing her for being unfilial.
Off to the side, Zhou Man couldn’t hide the smugness on her face.
Wild countryside bl00d will always be wild. How could she possibly compete with me?
“Sister, why haven’t you gone to visit Mom in the hospital these past few days? I know you’re still young and like to play around, but you can’t just ignore her like that.”
Now that was a line worth applauding, Zhou Luo almost clapped for her.
Zhou Congwen and Shen Jinling both looked displeased. They hadn’t expected much from Zhou Luo, but still, her mother had been hospitalized, and she hadn’t even shown her face once. That really couldn’t be justified anywhere.
“Dad, Mom, I wanted to go,” Zhou Luo said calmly, kneeling upright on the floor. Her gaze swept toward Zhou Man, cool and steady. “But my sister didn’t want me to.”
“Don’t make things up!” Zhou Man’s eyes widened, her voice trembling with righteous indignation. “When did I ever stop you? Mom’s been in the hospital, and I’ve been running myself ragged taking care of her. I haven’t even had a full night’s sleep! If you had wanted to come, I would have been overjoyed. Why would I ever stop you?”
Tears began to fall again, big and glistening drops that landed right where they needed to.
Just like that, Shen Jinling’s heart softened once more. Yes, Zhou Man might have acted a bit resentful in the hospital, but at least she’d stayed by her mother’s side.
She pulled Zhou Man protectively behind her and was about to reach for the household cane.
But Zhou Luo wasn’t the type to sit still and take a beating. She calmly took out her phone, her movements eerily similar to last time and said in a small, wounded voice, “Mom, I know I was wrong not to visit you while you were sick. You can hit me afterward if you want. But please… watch this video first.”
Zhou Man’s face went pale. Ever since that last time Zhou Luo had outsmarted her, she’d had a lingering fear. Everything she’d worked so carefully to build. She couldn’t let this wretched girl ruin it again.
Before Shen Jinling could take the phone, Zhou Man burst into tears. “Sister, just admit your mistake, okay? Stop trying to make excuses. Mom’s still recovering and the doctor said she needs rest. You didn’t visit her, fine, but now you won’t even let her vent a little? Do you have no heart?”
“Oh, shut up already.” Zhou Luo looked up, her face filled with unhidden disgust.
“What kind of attitude is that? Is your sister wrong to say so? You’re deliberately trying to tear this family apart, aren’t you? No manners at all!”
Shen Jinling reached for Zhou Man again, pulling her close. Whatever resentment she’d felt earlier evaporated under Zhou Man’s perfect display of tears.
Zhou Luo saw it all. She had long grown used to this sight.
No matter when or where, Zhou Man’s tears were gospel truth but today, she was in for a disappointment.
“Actually, she was wrong. She—”
Smack!
The slap landed before Zhou Luo could finish her sentence. Zhou Congwen grabbed her by the hair and struck her hard across the face.
“You ungrateful brat! Who are you calling wrong? Your sister’s been looking after your mother day and night! In this house, you don’t have the right to talk back!”
Zhou Luo froze. In all her life, no one had ever dared to slap her.
Her expression shifted — calm and detached, her eyes were cold enough to chill the room. That kind of quiet fury made even Zhou Congwen’s spine prickle.
“What’s that look for? You dare glare at your own father?!”
Zhou Luo’s lips curved faintly. “Oh, so you do remember you’re my father? Is this how you treat your daughter?”
She rose to her feet. Zhou Congwen, thinking she was about to resist, raised his hand again but Zhou Luo didn’t even flinch. Her expression didn’t change.
Then, in one swift motion, she turned her body, grabbed his arm, and threw him clean over her shoulder.
He hit the ground with a heavy thud.
The room went dead silent. Zhou Man and Shen Jinling stood frozen, pointing at Zhou Luo in shock, mouths opening and closing without sound.
Zhou Luo had always been the obedient one, submissive, silent.
“You wretched girl! How dare you hit your father?!”
Shen Jinling’s hands trembled with fury as she moved to strike her too. Zhou Luo glanced at the man writhing on the floor and said coldly, “I told you, she was the one who wouldn’t let me go. Why wouldn’t you hear me out first? Why hit me before even asking? Just because I was raised in the countryside? You lost me, and somehow that’s my fault now?”
Her voice rose, fierce and trembling with emotion that wasn’t entirely her own.
“If she’s so perfect, then why did you bother bringing me back at all? Was it just so you could show off your perfect little ‘happy family’?”
She jabbed a finger at Zhou Man. The rage in her chest wasn’t just hers. It was the original girl’s grief and fury, finally breaking free.
“Zhou Luo, are you insane?!”
Zhou Man’s face twisted in outrage, but fear flickered in her eyes. It was like her sister had been swapped out for someone else — someone dangerous, someone impossible to predict.
“You sent those street girls to block me, even came right to my house. Then you stand here pretending to be some innocent lotus flower? Zhou Man, what brand of trash bag are you using? It holds so much bullshit!”
Zhou Man’s cheeks flushed bright red. Before Shen Jinling could react, Zhou Luo tapped her screen, and the video began to play.
On it were Zhao Jiarui and her gang, blocking Zhou Luo’s doorway.
