- Chapter 8 - It Blew Up
Zhou Jun flew back overnight. He was going to break Zhou Luo’s legs. He wanted to see who on earth gave her the guts to spout such nonsense.
No one at home was answering the phone, and Manman’s voice had sounded off when he called. The moment he heard her crying on the other end, his heart nearly broke.
“Zhou Luo, you just wait for me!!!”
Fuming, Zhou Jun boarded the plane and rushed home the moment he landed. What he didn’t expect was to find the old master already there with Zhou Qian sitting right beside him.
Meanwhile, Zhou Congwen and Shen Jinling sat to the side, faces dark with unease. Zhou Jun put down his luggage, his spine straightening instinctively in the presence of the family patriarch. He didn’t dare show any disrespect.
It was strange, really. His grandfather had always been fond of him. But ever since that wild girl Zhou Luo had been brought back, the old man’s attitude toward their family had shifted completely.
Especially toward Manman. Zhou Jun couldn’t figure it out. How could Grandpa not like her? She was perfect in every way! Just look at her college entrance exam, Manman had told him herself she was guaranteed a place at Qingbei.
The thought warmed his chest. Manman was his sister, after all. Zhou Jun couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride.
But that pride shattered the moment he heard the faint sound of sobbing. His gaze snapped to the corner, there was Zhou Man, kneeling on the floor, her eyes swollen red, crying so weakly it hurt to watch.
Sensing his eyes on her, Zhou Man looked up pitifully, tears shimmering in her lashes. That fragile, helpless expression.
Before Zhou Jun could move, the old master cleared his throat, a sharp cough that made his meaning clear: Don’t act rashly.
“I thought,” Old Master Zhou Zhenye’s voice cut through the air like a blade, “that you were different from your parents. That at least the young generation had clearer eyes. But it seems you’re just as blind as they are—just as useless.”
Zhou Jun’s heart skipped a beat. Panic surged, but he still forced himself to speak up, to defend his parents and sister.
“Grandpa, it’s not what it looks like. My parents have always treated Zhou Luo well—”
“Well?” the old man snapped, cutting him off.
“Then tell me. How exactly is that well? I may be old, but I’m not dead! If you and your parents don’t bring Luo Luo back to me today, that upcoming Zhou Corporation project—forget about it.”
That struck Zhou Congwen right where it hurt. He had schemed for years for that project, all to push the Zhou Group to the next level or more accurately, to push himself there.
“Dad, this is between the children! You can’t mix business into this!”
“Children?” Zhou Zhenye laughed in disbelief.
“Children know how to hire thugs? To pay people to beat up their own sister? She’s enjoyed someone else’s life for years—and instead of feeling guilty, she wants to take that person’s place?”
“Grandpa!!!” Zhou Jun’s voice shot up. He had always been respectful, but what his grandfather said now was too much for him to bear.
“Grandpa, Manman’s a Zhou too. She’s your granddaughter!”
Zhou Qian, who had been silent until now, couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Did Grandpa not make himself clear enough? Second Brother, are you really that dense, or are you pretending? Zhou Man is the wild girl from the countryside! Everything she has belonged to our Luo Luo in the first place!”
“A nobody from the sticks thinking she can be one of us? Has she forgotten who she is?”
Old Master Zhou nodded approvingly at Zhou Qian’s words.
“That’s right. My granddaughter is Zhou Luo—not her. She’s been parading around under our name, stirring up trouble. Congwen, I’m starting to think you’ve gone senile.”
He’d once chosen not to interfere, believing no parent could truly be that biased. But seeing it now, he realized he’d been wrong.
“Dad, I was wrong. Please, give me another chance.” Zhou Congwen dropped to his knees before the old man, his tone full of remorse.
Zhou Zhenye raised a hand, silencing him coldly.
“You’re not wrong—you’re blind.”
On the other side, the men Zhou Congwen had sent to find Zhou Luo still hadn’t returned. Outwardly he wore a repentant face, but inside he was seething. He’d already made up his mind, if they found her, he’d never tell the old man.
He would lock Zhou Luo up and make her pay.
Teach her a lesson that she would never forget.
But before any news of Zhou Luo arrived, the police did.
“Is this the Zhou Man residence?” the officer in front asked, flashing his badge.
Everyone turned to look, stunned. Zhou Congwen frowned, assuming Zhou Luo must’ve called the police. He was just about to speak when the officer continued….
“We received a report that Zhou Man used high-tech devices to cheat in the national college entrance exam. After investigation, the accusation has been confirmed. Please come with us.”
Boom.
Zhou Man’s knees gave out, her whole body went cold.
How could this happen? How did the police find out, something that secret?
Who reported her?!
Old Master Zhou Zhenye was so furious he nearly keeled over. Cheating on the college entrance exam? That kind of scandal would make national news. The Zhou family’s reputation was about to be dragged straight through the mud.
Shen Jinling stared at Zhou Man in utter disappointment. Before the girl could even open her mouth to explain, Shen Jinling swung her hand hard across Zhou Man’s face.
“I raised you all these years, and this is how you repay me? I’m so disappointed in you.”
“No—it’s not like that—it’s not—how could this happen…”
Zhou Man’s voice trembled as panic flooded her eyes. Her body swayed, and for a moment she looked half mad. She stumbled to her feet, first terrified, then unhinged. Laughing and crying at once, she pointed at everyone in the room, her voice cracking with hysteria.
“You’re all insane! Who the hell wants to be part of your precious Zhou family anyway?!”
She jabbed a shaking finger toward Shen Jinling.
“And you! You knew the babies were switched, so why couldn’t you just let it stay that way? Why did you have to bring her back?! The moment she came home, there was a comparison—a contrast! And once there’s a comparison, what choice did I have but to do what I did?”
“How is this my fault? You’re the ones to blame!!!”
She was gone—completely gone.
Shen Jinling stood frozen, staring at Zhou Man in confusion and grief. Her chest ached with guilt and regret. Was I wrong? she thought faintly. Maybe I really shouldn’t have brought that jinx Zhou Luo back home.
Zhou Man wasn’t wrong ever since Zhou Luo’s return, the family’s peace had fallen apart.
So she got slapped a few times—couldn’t she have just endured it? Why did it have to come to this?
The police ended up dragging Zhou Man away. Zhou Jun tried to stop them, but there was no use. Even Zhou Qian was stunned. She hadn’t expected Zhou Man to be this bold.
Paying someone to assault Zhou Luo had already been outrageous enough, but now this?
Old Master Zhou was elderly, and Zhou Qian worried the shock might be too much for him. She reached out to support him, suggesting softly, “Grandpa, let’s go back and rest—”
But the old man refused.
“I’m staying right here. I want to see the mess you’ve all made. I want to watch you disgrace yourselves.”
Zhou Congwen had gone completely numb. His face was dark as thunder when he barked out—
“Don’t stop them! Take her away! I have no daughter like this in my family!”
“Dad! Dad—! Brother Jun~~~”
For the first time, Zhou Man’s bravado broke. True fear filled her eyes.
She was terrified that Zhou Jun wouldn’t be able to save her this time.
