- Chapter 15 - I Want You to Be a Soaring Eagle Rather Than a Canary
Shen Yuanyi’s face flushed red, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, her pupils reflecting Qi Ning’an’s innocent expression.
She dug her nails into her palm and quickly shook her head. “Of course not.”
Before Qi Ning’an could ask why, she sent out a pre-edited message and handed her phone over. “I’m going in first.”
With that, she patted her clothes and scurried away like a startled rabbit.
Only after entering the film set did she finally relax. The big villain was too pure—it was only natural she wouldn’t understand such implications.
Her fingers brushed against the spot where she’d been kissed, the lingering warmth of Qi Ning’an’s lips making her heart skip a beat.
Qi Ning’an picked up the soup pot left on the ground, peered inside, and smiled faintly.
This scene happened to be witnessed by Yan Yue, who had just stepped out to grab food. She shrank back, the smile in her eyes appearing sinister—utterly terrifying.
To be entangled with such a freak—poor little alpha.
——
Fifteen years ago, on a gloomy rainy day, Qi Ning’an had been seen in the park holding a small, battered kitten, its injuries unmistakably the result of abuse. A shallow grave had been dug beside her.
Yan Yue and her friends had stumbled upon the scene. Qi Ning’an, crouched on the ground, hands stained with bl00d, turned her hollow black eyes toward them. The group screamed and fled.
That was a monster—someone who tortured cats in the park’s bushes.
Qi Ning’an paid them no mind. She carefully buried the kitten, stood up, dusted off her hands, and left with her backpack.
The next day, rumors spread through the school that Qi Ning’an was a sadistic cat killer. She was called into the principal’s office but emerged quickly.
The school claimed she had rescued the kitten and even awarded her for it. But those who had seen it with their own eyes knew the truth—she had been holding the mutilated animal. And everyone knew the Ning’an family’s influence could turn black into white with a single word.
Outwardly, people accepted the school’s explanation. Privately, they whispered about her being a psychopath. Righteous Yan Yue led her classmates in avoiding Qi Ning’an, recounting the “truth” they had witnessed.
Her vivid descriptions painted a gruesome picture—Qi Ning’an allegedly stoning a pregnant cat to death.
“Let’s play a game,” Qi Ning’an said, her rare smile sending chills down Yan Yue’s spine.
——
The best thing was to stay far away from such a freak. Yan Yue shuddered at the sight of that smile and hurried off.
Not long after, Shen Yuanyi emerged from the set and got into Qi Ning’an’s car. Hands resting on her thighs, she murmured sheepishly, “Sister, sorry for troubling you again.”
Qi Ning’an, in the driver’s seat, patted her head. “No need to be so polite.”
Late that night, after bidding Qi Ning’an goodbye, Shen Yuanyi returned home, showered, and went to bed. In her dreams, she felt something wet and soft licking her face, teeth nibbling at her ear.
That sensation returned.
“Want…”
“Want what?”
Shen Yuanyi mumbled incoherently, her breath heavy, squirming away from the teasing at her ear.
Qi Ning’an didn’t push too far—she knew when to stop. Getting caught would mean losing her little puppy.
She slipped off her shoes and climbed into Shen Yuanyi’s bed, lying beside her, propped on one arm as she watched the sleeping girl’s face. Only when dawn’s light crept in did she finally rise, put on her shoes, and leave.
Spotting the clothes Shen Yuanyi had discarded under the sofa, she picked them up and placed them back neatly.
Shen Yuanyi woke with a racing heart, gasping for air, her thighs sticky with sweat. Flustered, she rushed to the bathroom and turned on the cold water.
She naturally walked over and sat on the sofa, pausing momentarily when she saw the clothes strewn across it. Shaking her head, she didn’t dwell on it—after all, casually tossing things around was just her usual habit.
After exchanging morning greetings with Qi Ning’an, who reciprocated with a “good morning,” she headed off to the film set.
Life followed a simple routine between two places, peaceful enough that if not for knowing this was a fictional world, Shen Yuanyi might have mistaken it for her previous life.
One sweltering afternoon a week later, a particular scene kept getting retaken as it failed to meet the director’s standards. With six assistants constantly bringing her water, fanning her, and wiping her sweat, Shen Yuanyi didn’t feel the heat too badly.
Yan Yue, however, wasn’t so fortunate. As a minor actress with limited resources—and after Qi Ning’an publicly denied their rumored relationship the very next day—no one bothered to curry favor with her.
Left completely alone, she soon collapsed from exhaustion during filming.
Amid the ensuing chaos, Shen Yuanyi rushed over, took water from an assistant, helped Yan Yue drink some, then carried her to rest in the shade of a tree.
Even if she hadn’t acted, others would have eventually stepped in—but she was the quickest to react, moving purely on instinct without a second thought.
Semi-conscious, Yan Yue realized with horror that Qi Ning’an’s so-called “prey” was the one holding her, trembling uncontrollably in fear.
Mistaking it for heatstroke, Shen Yuanyi gently touched Yan Yue’s forehead. “Are you okay?”
Her clear, innocent eyes gazed down like a harmless puppy’s.
For a fleeting moment, Yan Yue’s heart skipped a beat, disarmed by that genuine kindness—until remembering this was Qi Ning’an’s person. She hastily pulled away from Shen Yuanyi’s hand.
Struggling to sit up, she weakly muttered, “I’m fine.”
“Let me have one of my assistants look after you then. Get some rest—and you should take some anti-heatstroke medicine in this weather,” Shen Yuanyi advised with a warm smile before walking off.
Watching her leave, Yan Yue bit her lip.
An ache twisted in her chest. If only she had the power to rescue this little alpha, to free her from Qi Ning’an’s clutches.
But how could she save anyone when she herself was trapped?
Kindred spirits in suffering, she sighed deeply and turned away.
With an actress collapsing, the director finally called for a break.
At dusk, Qi Ning’an visited the set bearing chilled jelly desserts to beat the heat—one for every crew member.
One of Shen Yuanyi’s assistants whispered curiously to the others, “What’s here that Teacher Qi cares about? Last time we thought she came for her girlfriend, but wasn’t that rumor debunked?”
Another speculated, “Maybe they had a fight, hence the denial that night. Now she’s here to win her back.”
This explanation made perfect sense.
The boldest assistant approached Qi Ning’an and quietly informed her, “Teacher Qi, Teacher Yan is resting under that big tree over there.”
Holding the cool dessert, the assistant marveled at Qi Ning’an’s breathtaking beauty—her idol was flawless from every angle.
Qi Ning’an smiled at the assistant and nodded. “Thank you.”
The assistant was about to faint from excitement—her idol had spoken to her, so gently, with such graceful older sister vibes.
She could drown in that tenderness, wailing jpj.
Shen Yuanyi stood behind, quietly eating her ice jelly, her eyes seemingly focused only on the dessert without even glancing up at Qi Ning’an.
As if they were strangers who didn’t know each other.
Until a soft voice reached her ears, “Is it good?”
She looked up and met Qi Ning’an’s gaze, her face and neck instantly flushing crimson. “Sister…”
She wanted to say something, but with so many people around, she didn’t know how to act around Qi Ning’an. Did this mean they didn’t have to hide how close they were in private?
Qi Ning’an walked past her, leaving behind a faint, pleasant scent of tea.
Ah… was that a greeting?
Shen Yuanyi regretted her reaction just now—she should have replied normally, saying it was delicious.
An assistant walking over noticed Shen Yuanyi’s flushed face and tilted her head in confusion. “Teacher Shen, your face is so red. What’s wrong?”
Snapping back to reality, Shen Yuanyi touched her face and realized it was indeed burning hot. She quickly shook her head and smiled. “It’s nothing, just the heat.”
The assistant didn’t think much of it and nodded. “Yeah, it’s so muggy. Feels like it’s going to rain tonight.”
The ice jelly Qi Ning’an brought was definitely the best remedy for the heat. After gulping it down, she didn’t feel so warm anymore.
“Did you do something to her?” Qi Ning’an asked coldly, her fingers trembling with anger as she glared at Yan Yue sitting under the tree.
One stood while the other sat, and the standing figure blocked most of the seated one from view. To others, it would just look like a normal conversation.
“Nothing happened. I passed out from heatstroke, and that little alpha carried me under the tree to rest. We didn’t do or say anything.”
Listening to the explanation, it didn’t seem like a lie, but Qi Ning’an couldn’t help feeling jealous. Shen Yuanyi should have been holding her, should have kept her distance from other omegas.
She couldn’t help grumbling inwardly—this puppy was just too kind-hearted.
Leaning down, she whispered threateningly into Yan Yue’s ear, “If you dare spread any nonsense, I’ll kill you.”
She placed the ice jelly in Yan Yue’s hand and walked away, leaving the latter trembling uncontrollably, a cold sweat trickling down her neck.
That night, it did rain, forcing the director to cancel the night shoot and send everyone back to rest.
Shen Yuanyi left the set much earlier than usual and spotted a Porsche parked at the entrance. She dashed through the raindrops toward it.
Once inside the car, she sweetly called out, “Sister.”
“Honestly, didn’t you have an umbrella? You’re all wet.” Qi Ning’an took out tissues and began wiping the rainwater from Shen Yuanyi’s face and clothes.
Shen Yuanyi let her, her smile as charming and adorable as a Samoyed’s. Feeling cared for and cherished, warmth spread through her heart.
Qi Ning’an treated her like a mother would—better than her own family ever had.
“It was just a short distance. I told my assistant not to bother with an umbrella. Sister, it’s fine, just a little rain.”
Her nose was pinched lightly. “Do you want to experience another fever?”
“I’m not that fragile,” Shen Yuanyi pouted.
“Alright.” Her head was gently patted as Qi Ning’an said, “There’s a banquet this weekend hosted by Director Zhou. It’s not like the last entertainment gathering—this one will let you network with industry insiders, which could help your future career. Want to go?”
For someone as insignificant as Shen Yuanyi, attending such a banquet would normally be out of the question—unless someone brought her along.
“Why are you staring at me?” Qi Ning’an pinched Shen Yuanyi’s cheek.
Shen Yuanyi sniffled before throwing herself into Qi Ning’an’s arms, bursting into loud sobs. “Sister, you’re way too good to me.”
The original owner and Qi Ning’an had a sugar daddy relationship—one where she should have traded her body for resources or lived as a caged canary under Qi Ning’an’s care.
But she never made her do that.
“You’re…” Qi Ning’an understood exactly what her little puppy was thinking and patted Shen Yuanyi’s back helplessly. “I’ve told you before—rather than keeping you as my canary, I’d much rather see you soar like an eagle in the sky.”
