- Chapter 21 - Sister's Possessiveness
Shen Yuanyi went to the kitchen to brew a pot of tea, took some cream puffs and cookies from the refrigerator, and ate with Qi Ning’an until around ten in the evening. After taking a shower, she made the bed for Qi Ning’an and then went to sleep.
In the middle of the night, Qi Ning’an got up from bed, retrieved the camera she had placed in Shen Yuanyi’s room, clenched her fingers, and narrowed her eyes—that woman was unforgivable!
Returning to her room, she stashed the camera in her bag, then tiptoed over to Shen Yuanyi’s bedside. After indulging in a brief infatuation, she took off her shoes, climbed onto the bed, and snuggled into the incredibly warm blankets.
The sweet scent of cream was like stepping into a bakery, as if she could still taste the plate of cream puffs and cookies from earlier. She took a deep breath near Shen Yuanyi’s neck, her face flushed and gently wrapped her arms around the puppy’s waist.
Perhaps because it was too comfortable or because she had been exhausted these past few days, she unknowingly fell asleep.
When Shen Yuanyi woke up, her jaw nearly dropped in shock. Her eyes widened—how, how, how was there someone sleeping beside her bed?!
When had the big villain climbed into her bed?
“Qi Ning’an, Qi Ning’an…” Shen Yuanyi lightly patted Qi Ning’an’s shoulder, so flustered she could barely think straight.
Seeing the sleeping woman’s eyelids twitch, her heart skipped a beat. It felt as if she were the one who had climbed into Qi Ning’an’s bed, a guilty conscience creeping over her.
A pair of sleepy eyes slowly opened, but Qi Ning’an remained lying there calmly, not rushing to get up.
Qi Ning’an appeared completely unfazed, as if sleeping in someone else’s bed was nothing unusual or urgent. In truth, she had woken the moment Shen Yuanyi called her name, her heart gripped tightly as if by an invisible hand.
Her palms were sweaty, but she forced herself to maintain the innocent look of a clueless little rabbit.
“You’re awake. How did you end up in my bed?” Shen Yuanyi scratched her head and asked.
Qi Ning’an rubbed her eyes drowsily and mumbled, “It was too cold. Sleeping with the puppy is warmer.”
“But, but you…” Shen Yuanyi felt like her head was about to explode—so itchy, she couldn’t stop scratching.
Qi Ning’an gazed at her with innocent eyes, tilting her head slightly. “Is that not allowed?”
Logically, it shouldn’t be. But this was the pure and naive Qi Ning’an, who probably didn’t even know the distinction between alphas and omegas. In her eyes, Shen Yuanyi was likely just another omega of the same gender.
It was too dangerous. If it had been anyone else, Qi Ning’an might have been tricked into doing something unspeakable.
Shen Yuanyi replied sternly, “Of course it’s not allowed!”
“There’s a difference between alphas and omegas. Alphas can easily lose control under the influence of pheromones. What if I did something to you…”
Her eyes inadvertently caught sight of the two snowy mounds beneath Qi Ning’an’s loose collar, and her face instantly turned crimson. She threw off the blankets, leaped out of bed, and clutched her chest, panting heavily.
“Puppy, what’s wrong?” Qi Ning’an looked at her with innocent eyes. The image from earlier flashed in Shen Yuanyi’s mind, and she immediately turned to face the window, shaking her head.
“Get dressed. We still have to clean today.” Shen Yuanyi chose to sidestep the topic—if Qi Ning’an kept asking, she couldn’t very well say she had seen two white bunnies, could she?
Unbeknownst to her, Qi Ning’an smiled behind her back. Far from being a naive little rabbit, she was a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Dawn had broken. Drawing back the curtains, they saw a thin layer of snow on the ground outside, the sunlight slowly melting the frost on the trees.
Qi Ning’an went to the kitchen to wash the tea set and plates dirtied last night, then picked up a broom to sweep the living room, kitchen, and bathroom…
Shen Yuanyi, meanwhile, sorted through the piled-up clothes—washing what needed washing and putting away what belonged in the closet. After finishing, she grabbed a cloth to dust the tables and cabinets.
The room was cleaned until it sparkled, looking as pristine as a newly moved-in home. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she felt much more at ease.
Shen Yuanyi thanked Qi Ning’an for her help, declaring that she could ask for anything she needed. Qi Ning’an smiled shyly and nodded.
After seeing Qi Ning’an off, Shen Yuanyi lay back on the sofa, notebook in hand, ready to compose music—but before she knew it, she had pulled out her phone and started searching for information about Qi Ning’an online.
At nineteen, she had won Best Actress, and by twenty-four, she had swept major awards both domestically and internationally over six years, earning the title of the most talented actress. In the following years, she entered a semi-retired state, appearing in only one movie or variety show a year if lucky. Though rarely seen in public, she was never forgotten—each appearance still caused an internet explosion…
Noticing the birthday date listed—November 23rd—Shen Yuanyi tapped her pen against her chin in thought. There were still over twenty days left. What gift should she give?
Qi Ning’an, who was supposed to leave, glanced at the building directly opposite Shen Yuanyi’s. If she bought a high-floor apartment, she could observe her little puppy better. Maybe she should get a telescope too. Once the idea struck, she acted immediately.
Shen Yuanyi snapped out of her thoughts. As Qi Ning’an’s friend, she should just give a typical friend’s gift—like a birthday cake, a crystal ball, pens, or a notebook…
But Qi Ning’an probably didn’t lack friends like her, nor would she care much about her gift. Besides, they weren’t even official friends—just a sponsor and her beneficiary.
Getting up from the sofa, she packed her things and headed to the café from yesterday. To her surprise, Yan Yue was waiting there, wearing the coat Shen Yuanyi had given her.
“Have you been waiting outside all this time?” Shen Yuanyi asked, noticing how Yan Yue was shivering, her nose red from the cold.
The girl nodded. “The hotel had no food, and I didn’t have any money.”
“What if I hadn’t come? Would you have just kept waiting?”
“Mm. But I knew you’d come.” Yan Yue said with certainty.
Shen Yuanyi really would have come—partly because composing at home was difficult, and partly because she was worried about Yan Yue staying alone in a hotel.
She sighed. Sometimes, the female lead’s stubbornness was frustrating. What if she really hadn’t shown up today? Yan Yue would’ve ended up freezing and sick.
“Come on, let’s go inside. It’s cold out here.”
But Yan Yue hung her head, unmoving.
Puzzled, Shen Yuanyi bent down to look at her—only to notice an unnatural flush on her face, accompanied by faint coughing.
Yan Yue’s steps were unsteady, her legs giving way as she collapsed right into Shen Yuanyi’s arms, startling her.
“You—”
Yan Yue wrapped her arms around Shen Yuanyi’s waist, burying her face against her chest. “Shen Yuanyi… this winter is so cold.”
This was clearly the delirious talk of a high fever—this winter wasn’t cold at all. In fact, the sun had melted the snow today.
Without hesitation, Shen Yuanyi hoisted her onto her back and rushed to the nearest clinic.
Qi Ning’an, who had been following them, saw everything. Furious, she gritted her teeth. That woman was definitely doing it on purpose—why collapse right when Shen Yuanyi arrived? And right into her arms?!
Damn it! That puppy was hers!!!
Her fingers clenched tightly, nails nearly digging into her flesh, leaving crescent-shaped marks on her palms that were startling to see.
She followed the two people ahead of her step by step until they reached a small clinic. There, she saw the doctor instruct Shen Yuanyi to feed Yan Yue water, and Shen Yuanyi actually complied, going to the water dispenser to fetch hot water.
Qi Ning’an nearly pounded her chest in frustration. How could that woman deserve such treatment? How?!
“Puppy, puppy, puppy, don’t be fooled by that wicked woman.”
With a dark expression, she strode straight into the clinic. The attending doctor noticed her and asked where she felt unwell, but she stood there silently without answering.
“Qi—” Shen Yuanyi, who was still by the water dispenser, recognized Qi Ning’an in an instant despite her mask. She barely managed to utter a single syllable before clamping her mouth shut, her eyes darting around nervously.
Her mind didn’t even have time to process why Qi Ning’an had come to this clinic—all she could think about was the risk of Qi Ning’an’s identity being exposed. The chaos that would ensue if the award-winning actress were recognized was unthinkable.
Just as the doctor narrowed his eyes suspiciously and stood up to question her further, Shen Yuanyi grabbed Qi Ning’an’s hand. “She’s my friend, not a patient.”
“Oh, I see.” The doctor relented and sat back down.
Shen Yuanyi wanted to ask Qi Ning’an why she had come here, but with so many people around, she decided to wait until the nurse finished cleaning the inner room before questioning her properly.
She let go of Qi Ning’an’s hand and carried the water to where Yan Yue was seated. Unexpectedly, Qi Ning’an wrapped her arms around Shen Yuanyi’s arm, coughing weakly before saying, “I want my puppy to feed me water.”
This…
Her pitiful eyes gazed up, tears welling in them.
“Big sister, she’s sick with a fever, so I’m just giving her some warm water.”
Qi Ning’an coughed weakly. “I have a fever too.”
“But I think she’s worse off. Let me finish helping her first, then I’ll take care of you,” Shen Yuanyi said.
“I’ll feed her, and you feed me,” Qi Ning’an insisted, staring unblinkingly at her as if she’d cling on forever if refused.
It didn’t matter who did it, Shen Yuanyi thought. Remembering that Yan Yue hadn’t eaten and that an empty stomach would make the IV drip uncomfortable, she agreed. “Alright, then I’ll trouble you, big sister. I’ll go buy her something to eat first.”
“Huh? Why her?”
Shen Yuanyi was startled. She tilted her head. “Is something wrong, big sister?”
“No, no. I’m hungry too. My puppy should buy food for me, not her.”
Shen Yuanyi scratched her cheek. “Then I’ll buy two portions—one for you and one for Teacher Yan.”
Hearing this, the little rabbit looked like she was about to cry. “Do you really have to buy her something too?”
She couldn’t stand the thought of sharing her puppy’s kindness with that woman. It should belong to her alone.
“Big sister, Teacher Yan is sick. If she doesn’t eat something before the IV, she’ll feel terrible.”
Qi Ning’an wanted to say, “So what?”
“But I’m sick too. I only want you to take care of me,” Qi Ning’an sobbed, unable to hold back as she clung to Shen Yuanyi’s arm. Large teardrops soaked through Shen Yuanyi’s sleeve.
She was willing to do anything for her puppy—except share her affection with someone else.
A bitter ache spread through her throat, and her trembling hands tightened around Shen Yuanyi as she cried so hard she nearly choked.
“Don’t cry, don’t cry.” Shen Yuanyi, bewildered, panicked, unsure of what to do. “I’ll only buy food for you, okay?”
Qi Ning’an looked up at her, her long lashes still wet with tears, shoulders shaking uncontrollably—utterly pitiful.
Gazing at her like this made her feel like some fickle scumbag who had betrayed her deeply devoted wife.
What wife? Ugh, what nonsense was she even thinking?
Shen Yuanyi chuckled and patted Qi Ning’an on the head.
Just then, a nurse came out of the ward and instructed the patient to return to bed to rest.
Shen Yuanyi had intended to carry Yan Yue into the ward, but Qi Ning’an proactively supported Yan Yue by the arm and said, “Let me handle it. Puppy, go buy some food.”
Was it really okay for one patient to help another?
Watching Qi Ning’an and Yan Yue move slowly, Shen Yuanyi confirmed there was no issue and, without overthinking it, set down the water bottle and went out to buy food.
Returning with a bowl of light shredded pork and cabbage soup rice, she handed it to Qi Ning’an, who took one bite before passing the rest to Yan Yue.
Exactly as Shen Yuanyi had thought—her sister was just a bit possessive, but not the least bit malicious.
Sitting on the plastic stool, she watched Qi Ning’an feed Yan Yue water. The scene was heartwarming no matter how you looked at it. Resting her chin on her hand, she smiled faintly.
