- Chapter 36 - Are You Choosing Her or Choosing Me?
In the middle of the night, whether it was from drinking too much tea or eating too much seafood congee, Shen Yuanyi tossed and turned before reluctantly getting up to use the bathroom.
Without opening her eyes, she merely sat up in bed when she heard the sound of a vase shattering in the room. Reaching out to turn on the light, she hazily saw a familiar figure standing by the door.
She sighed in relief, having initially thought a burglar had broken in.
Her voice still thick with sleep, she mumbled, “Qi Ning’an, what are you doing here?”
Damn, she’d been caught. Now the puppy would surely hate her.
Qi Ning’an stood motionless at the doorway, her back to Shen Yuanyi. She braced herself for being called a creep, fingers clenched tightly, palms sweating.
Yet Shen Yuanyi slipped on her slippers, got out of bed, and suddenly embraced the figure standing there—even lifting her up in a princess carry.
“Too cold sleeping alone, huh? The spot I just slept in is still warm.”
Gently placing her on the bed and tucking her in, Shen Yuanyi then dragged her sleepy body step by step toward the bathroom.
She had no idea how tense Qi Ning’an the moment had been she was embraced, how tightly her muscles had locked up.
Curled in the warm bed, Qi Ning’an felt an unprecedented sense of comfort. The pillow still carried the creamy scent of Shen Yuanyi’s pheromones—sweet and delicious.
Why was her heart pounding so hard?
When Shen Yuanyi returned to bed, finding the other side still cold, she scooted closer to Qi Ning’an and hugged her. “Turn off the light and sleep. Goodnight.”
The faint tea fragrance was utterly intoxicating. Shen Yuanyi nuzzled closer to the back of Qi Ning’an’s neck, sharing the same pillow, one leg slipping between Qi Ning’an’s thighs, her knee pressing against the damp core…
None of this was intentional—Shen Yuanyi was simply cold.
Slowly, she drifted into a deep, oblivious sleep.
Qi Ning’an turned over, inching closer until their bodies pressed tightly together. The place where their knees met grew wetter, her thighs clamping around Shen Yuanyi’s leg. The puppy’s nose was cute, her eyes were cute, even her eyebrows were cute. A hand emerged from under the blanket, tracing Shen Yuanyi’s features with a fingertip.
“Someone like me… you wouldn’t like, would you?”
“Mmm… Qi Ning’an…” Shen Yuanyi murmured sleepily.
The tracing finger froze. Qi Ning’an’s heart skipped a beat, her entire body tensing as she carefully withdrew her hand and edged slightly away.
After waiting without further response, she realized it had just been sleep-talk.
“You scared me,” Qi Ning’an muttered with faint resentment. “Calling my name even in your dreams… what were you dreaming about?”
She turned off the light and slept.
The long night passed peacefully, both sleeping soundly until dawn.
Qi Ning’an woke first, carefully extricating herself from Shen Yuanyi. She cleaned up the shattered vase from last night before quietly slipping out.
The moment the door closed, Shen Yuanyi stirred awake. Groping the empty space beside her, she mumbled, “Huh? Where’s Qi Ning’an?” Yawning widely, she tried recalling the previous night’s events. “Was it a dream?”
Getting up and drawing the curtains, she looked down to see a disheveled, haggard figure standing in the snow.
The silhouette was achingly familiar. As the woman looked up, their eyes met through the window. “Jiejie,” Shen Yuanyi breathed aloud.
Heart lurching, she rushed downstairs and threw open the door, unable to believe the bedraggled woman before her was her once-proud elder sister.
Shen Yuanyi walked over slowly and called out, “Sister.” For some reason, her appearance made her feel guilty, as if everything about her was her own doing.
Suddenly, her wrist was grabbed. Turning around, she saw Qi Ning’an.
Shen Muhan had a bandage wrapped around her wrist and extended her hand, saying, “Little sister, come with me.”
Qi Ning’an, standing behind her, also spoke up, “Shen Yuanyi, come with me.”
Glancing at both of them, Shen Yuanyi wondered if she was still dreaming, not fully awake yet.
“We’ll go abroad, live with Mom and Mama, and be together as a family, okay?” Shen Muhan took a step forward and grasped Shen Yuanyi’s hand.
Qi Ning’an, sounding aggrieved and on the verge of tears, pleaded, “If you leave, I’ll be so lonely. Shen Yuanyi, stay with me.”
“You two…” Shen Yuanyi looked back and forth between them, her head nearly exploding.
Shen Muhan gritted her teeth. “Little sister, you don’t know…” She was about to expose how Qi Ning’an had used her phone last night to send messages, nearly ruining their sisterly bond forever.
But Qi Ning’an let go of Shen Yuanyi’s hand first, cutting Shen Muhan off. “Shen Yuanyi, choose—your sister or me.”
“If you pick your sister, then we’ll never see each other again.”
Shen Yuanyi’s heart ached as if it had been gouged by a knife, her gaze fixed on Qi Ning’an.
“Three, two, one.” She gave her only three seconds to decide.
Between her sister and Qi Ning’an, she didn’t hesitate—she chose her.
Shen Yuanyi took Qi Ning’an’s hand. “I can’t lose you.”
Compared to a sister she had only known for a week, she would always choose Qi Ning’an, who had been by her side for half a year. Even if that sister gave her a sense of familiarity, as if she were the sister from her memories, she would still choose her.
“Shen Yuanyi.” Qi Ning’an hugged her from behind, her voice trembling as if she were about to cry.
She rested her chin on Shen Yuanyi’s shoulder and flashed a triumphant smile at the figure standing in the snow, mouthing the words, Shen Yuanyi is mine.
Right in front of Shen Muhan, Qi Ning’an kissed Shen Yuanyi’s cheek.
Shen Muhan clenched her fists so tightly that bl00d seeped through the bandage on her wrist. Shaking with anger, she turned and walked away.
“Sister!” Shen Yuanyi called after her.
In her ear, Qi Ning’an’s voice whispered, “Being too greedy gets you nothing.”
Watching that lonely figure disappears, Shen Yuanyi thought about how Shen Muhan must have waited outside her door since before dawn. That familiarity—could she really not be her biological sister?
“Sister…” Tears welled up in Shen Yuanyi’s eyes as she called out again.
You’re impossible, Qi Ning’an thought to herself. She didn’t want her little puppy to follow that woman, nor did she want to see her upset.
Qi Ning’an released Shen Yuanyi and took a step back. “Go talk to her. I’ll wait here for you.”
“Okay.” Shen Yuanyi nodded.
Why had she been transported into this world? Was it just because she had read a novel in her dorm where a minor character shared her name?
What had she been like before? What did her teammates look like? So many things were hazy in her mind, too unclear to recall.
Catching up to Shen Muhan, she said, “Sister, tell Mom and Mama that I’m doing fine.”
Shen Muhan gritted her teeth, wanting to take Shen Yuanyi away. She turned and grabbed her hand. “Come back with me. It’s dangerous here.”
Shen Yuanyi pried open Shen Muhan’s fingers and shook her head. “No.”
“You have no idea how terrifying Qi Ning’an is. She’ll harm you.”
Shen Yuanyi froze for a moment. Was she talking about the pure little bunny Qi Ning’an? Why did it sound like she was describing a serial killer?
“She’s a good person, not what you’re saying. I hope one day you two can become good friends.”
In the distance, Qi Ning’an standing outside the door waved at them with a smile.
Seeing this, Shen Yuanyi waved back.
“Take care, sis. I’ll be staying at Qi Ning’an’s place for a few days.” With that, she left.
To Shen Muhan, Qi Ning’an’s smile seemed sinister, as if warning her not to speak carelessly, sending chills down her spine.
When Shen Yuanyi ran up to Qi Ning’an, her cheeks were gently pinched. “So, did you explain everything to your sister?”
“Mm-hmm, I told her I’d be staying with you for a few days.”
“Let’s go inside then. It’s too cold out here.”
“Okay!”
With less than a week until New Year’s, Shen Yuanyi and Qi Ning’an entered the villa and sat on the sofa browsing holiday decorations online while planning their New Year’s Eve dinner menu…
During those two years without Shen Yuanyi by her side, Qi Ning’an had spent her days alone in the villa, sipping tea in solitude from morning till night, eating a simple meal before bed.
She didn’t think much of it—she’d spent previous years alone too. The house was always cold and quiet, her mother leaving her behind while she went out hunting for romance.
“Let’s get this one, it looks fun,” Shen Yuanyi said, pointing at sparklers on the tablet.
Qi Ning’an glanced at it and placed the order without hesitation.
She secretly hoped the New Year would come quickly, sensing this year would be different with Shen Yuanyi’s company.
Shen Yuanyi never imagined she, a mere cannon fodder character, would be celebrating the New Year with the villain.
Tilting her head, she caught sight of Qi Ning’an’s profile and found herself irresistibly drawn to it, wanting to stare endlessly.
Her fair complexion looked as delectable as a cake, tempting her to take a bite. The soothing tea fragrance emanating from her made Shen Yuanyi swallow unconsciously.
Pretending to browse the tablet together, Shen Yuanyi deliberately inched closer to Qi Ning’an, leaning her head against hers.
At this proximity, the tea scent grew richer, as if she could even smell her warmth.
Shen Yuanyi’s eyes kept darting to Qi Ning’an’s face, lingering for two or three seconds each time.
“Shen Yuanyi.” Qi Ning’an lifted her head, tucking her hair behind her ear.
Startled, Shen Yuanyi gripped the sofa tightly. “Hmm?”
“I need to use the restroom. You keep browsing.” Qi Ning’an’s cheeks were faintly flushed as she handed her the tablet and stood up.
“Okay.” Taking it, Shen Yuanyi’s heart pounded wildly, wondering if Qi Ning’an had noticed something.
But she said she was going to the bathroom, so probably not.
Watching Qi Ning’an leave, Shen Yuanyi pinched her own cheek and muttered, “Don’t let your little crush be discovered by the pure little bunny, or you won’t even be able to stay friends.”
It was a warning to herself.
Entering the bathroom, Qi Ning’an closed the door and took a deep breath. Her reflection in the mirror showed her face growing increasingly flushed.
Her mind was filled with thoughts of Shen Yuanyi—her closeness had made her heart race uncontrollably. She’d felt those lingering gazes but didn’t dare look up, afraid of giving herself away.
Shen Yuanyi only saw her as an ordinary friend—no, not even that. In her heart, their relationship was purely that of a patron and beneficiary.
Someone like her would never like her, let alone the perverted version of herself.
Qi Ning’an splashed a handful of cold water on her face, but the heat in her cheeks didn’t subside—they were still burning red.
“Shen Yuanyi…” She gripped the edge of the sink, murmuring the name.
The more unattainable something was, the more she craved it. Trembling, she recalled the sensation of touching Shen Yuanyi’s skin. “Ah~”
“Not enough… not nearly enough… I want more…”
She pulled out her phone, staring at Shen Yuanyi’s videos and photos as her hand slid downward.
Seated on the sofa, Shen Yuanyi bit her thumbnail, her eyes fixed on the dazzling array of products on the screen, though her mind had long drifted elsewhere.
Qi Ning’an is so beautiful… Qi Ning’an smells so good… Qi Ning’an… I want to kiss her lips so badly.
