Summary
Makoto Inada, a 6-dan professional shogi player, is constantly stressed out by his unique situation—he has taken on as his disciple Touka, the first-ever female to become a professional shogi player while still in middle school. The pressure of mentoring an unparalleled genius would be enough on its own, but what really wears him down are the two things Touka has been declaring since the moment she became his student:
- “When I become Meijin (shogi grandmaster), let’s get married, okay, Sensei?”
- “Once I become Meijin, I’ll retire from being a shogi player.”
What was supposed to be a sweet, innocent childhood promise has become a determined mission for his headstrong disciple. As Touka relentlessly pursues her goal, Makoto finds himself both flustered by her devotion and desperately trying to stop her from reaching the title of Meijin—if only to avoid the emotional and professional chaos that would follow.
This romantic comedy follows a master and his prodigy disciple locked in a battle of wits, hearts, and shogi.
