- Chapter 17 - Assassination (II) – Stabbing
Four days had passed since Hebimiya’s training had begun.
Lior had grown so accustomed to being thrown into the lake that even with increased weight, he could now resurface without difficulty.
“Your next training is ready.”
Hebimiya led Lior to the underground chamber of the estate.
It had once been used as an armory, but it was now completely cleared out.
“We have permission to use this space as your training ground.”
“Wasn’t the courtyard good enough?”
“Too much risk of collateral damage. A confined space is… more convenient.”
“Collateral damage…? Wait, this isn’t another dangerous training session, is it?”
“All of my training is dangerous.”
Hebimiya shut down the conversation immediately.
Lior was the heir to the marquisate, yet all of his training consisted of life-threatening exercises.
Lior himself had no objections, but he found it odd that Mason never intervened.
If something were to happen to the heir while Mason was in charge, it would be a major issue for him as well.
Yet, Mason had never said a word about it.
As Lior pondered this, Hebimiya strode deeper into the chamber.
Lior quickly followed.
“What’s in that box? It’s rattling like crazy.”
“Training equipment. Took me a while to gather these.”
Hebimiya unlatched the crate and threw it open.
Inside was an assortment of weapons—
Swords, axes, spears. Various close-combat tools.
But something was off.
Each weapon was wrapped tightly in chains, shaking violently, as if they were trying to break free.
“These are weapons possessed by ghosts.”
“Ghosts? You mean undead?”
“Exactly. Ghosts are incorporeal undead—they lack physical bodies but can possess objects and attack the living. They often haunt weapons and armor like this.”
“Uh… You do realize this is supposed to be training, right? Are we really okay with haunted weapons?”
“It’s because they’re haunted that they’re perfect for training.”
Hebimiya picked up a sword, still bound by chains, and released it.
Casually tossing the weapon into the air, he watched as it floated midair, then immediately turned its blade toward him.
Whoosh!
Like an arrow, the possessed sword lunged forward.
But Hebimiya effortlessly dodged, catching the hilt in one smooth motion.
“Ghost-possessed weapons attack anything alive. Your task will be to dodge them. Normally, I’d have a real person attack you, but no one in this household was willing to go all out against the marquis’s heir. So this is the next best thing.”
“I see…”
It was essentially the classic “dodge-the-swinging-logs” training, except with floating ghost weapons instead of logs.
Compared to being thrown into a lake with weights, this seemed far easier.
(This should be no problem. My eyesight is sharp. Compared to that demon’s attacks, these possessed weapons will be easy to dodge.)
Lior felt relaxed—until Hebimiya reached down and picked something else up.
“I watched your sparring match with that knight, Laura. You rely too much on your eyesight. So for this training—”
Hebimiya held up a thick blindfold.
“—you’ll be doing it blindfolded.”
“Wait… Blindfolded!?”
The heavy-duty blindfold looked like something used for torture.
Once it was tied on, there would be no way for him to remove it on his own.
(A blindfold challenge in an action game…? Even hardcore players wouldn’t go this far.)
Hebimiya ignored Lior’s hesitation and secured the blindfold around his head.
With a solid click, the lock engaged.
Darkness.
Lior couldn’t see a thing.
“Don’t worry. Dodging will be tough at first, so I’ll burn some incense to suppress the undead’s movements. That should slow them down enough for you to get used to it.”
A faint, nostalgic scent filled the underground chamber.
It smelled oddly similar to incense—the kind that burned in his grandmother’s house back in his previous world.
Lior never thought he’d experience that scent in a fantasy world.
The sound of rattling chains echoed.
Hebimiya was unshackling the weapons.
Then, silence.
Only for a moment—before the whirring of blades cutting through air surrounded him.
“The weapons are free. Now, use every sense except sight to dodge.”
“Y-Yes, sir.”
Lior focused.
The flow of air against his skin.
The sharp sound of slicing metal.
He pieced together the movements around him, creating an image in his mind.
Swish!
A sharp whoosh cut through the air.
Lior felt the rush of wind against his face and instinctively tilted his head aside.
He was certain—
The blade had just missed his face by mere millimeters.
“Not bad. Even with their speed reduced, I expected you to dodge this much.”
“T-Thank you.”
So, he had dodged it.
This was his first time completely blindfolded, but he had fought in pitch-black conditions before.
His experience from Drag Machina was paying off again.
As Lior continued dodging the attacks, he heard footsteps descending the stairs.
“Master Hebimiya, Mason wishes to speak with you.”
“Ah, got it. Lior, my employer’s calling. I’ll step out for a bit. You’ll be fine on your own, right?”
“Wait… You’re leaving?”
Lior’s murmur was either ignored or unheard.
The two sets of footsteps receded, fading from the chamber.
He was still dodging the attacks, but being left alone was unsettling.
(They’re gone… Well, I can still dodge, so—wait. Are these weapons getting faster?)
The attacks definitely felt quicker.
No—
They were faster.
The whirring of blades had turned into sharp, rapid whooshes.
The difference was like a city street compared to a highway.
(…Wait. Is the incense wearing off!?)
The suppressing incense’s scent was fading.
Which meant—
The ghost-possessed weapons were regaining their full speed.
This was bad.
Lior had been dodging by a narrow margin, even at the slower pace.
If the attacks got even more intense, he wasn’t confident he could keep dodging them all.
And to make things worse—
The blindfold was locked. He couldn’t remove it himself.
(Wait… Isn’t this literally impossible!?!?)
Sweat trickled down Lior’s face as the weapons whizzed past him, faster and faster.
