A little before Yutaka and Nergo left the town of Kanaloa.

On the third floor of the barracks in Kanaloa, in a room currently not in use. 

It was where Sebas and Kotama were currently evacuated.

The room was empty. The four wooden beds lined up against the wall barely indicated it was once a bedroom.

“Sebas! Tell me already why I was brought here!”

Kotama pressed Sebas for answers. She was unable to hide her anxiety and irritation.

Her cat ears and fluffy tail stood upright. They were honestly expressing her emotions.

“Kotama, I’ve told you many times, haven’t I? This is Yutaka-sama’s order. Please stay calm for now.”

Sebas’s tone was unexpectedly stern and hard. It was completely unlike his usual gentle self.

That harsh tone left Kotama confused. Her heart was wavering between the trust she’d built over the years for her beloved butler and her current unease.

*Knock, knock.*

Just then, a restrained knock echoed. And the two turned sharply toward the door.

“Sebas, Kotama, you there? It’s Ron.”

It was a slightly curt voice.

Sebas let out a sigh of relief.

“Ron-sama…? Please, come in.”

The door opened. And Ron entered with something on his back.

Slumped over his back like luggage was a small blonde girl.

It was the elf, Rururii.

“That on your back is…?”

“Ah… she said she was sleepy and asked me to carry her. Then she just climbed on without asking. I couldn’t just leave her…”

Ron shrugged. He was smiling awkwardly.

“In that case, shall we take care of her here? Fortunately, there are free beds.”

“…Then I guess I’ll leave her with you.”

Accepting Sebas’ offer, Ron gently laid Rururii on one of the beds.

She slept soundly. She was breathing peacefully.

“So then, Ron-sama, why are you here?”

“Uh… Freyja asked me to check on you.”

“I see. No need to worry. Both Kotama and I are perfectly fine.”

While Sebas answered calmly, Kotama looked down. She was clearly still unsatisfied.

“I see… if you need anything, let me know. I’ll bring it right away.”

As Ron said this, Kotama suddenly ran up to him.

“Then, Ron, please bring Yutaka-sama here! If Sebas won’t tell me, I’ll ask Yutaka-sama directly!”

She pleaded earnestly.

The sudden closeness made Ron flush red and panic.

“K-Kotama!? U-uh, B-Boss is still… still dealing with the inspection team…”

Ron stammered—

*CRASH!*

A shattering sound rang out as the window exploded into pieces.

“Kyaaaa!”

Kotama’s scream echoed through the room.

“What in the world!?”

Sebas also raised his voice in shock.

It happened in an instant.

But Ron reacted quickly.

He positioned himself between the cowering Kotama and the window. He was glaring sharply at the intruder.

Standing there was someone in light gear. Their face was completely hidden by a deep hood.

“Who are you!?”

Ron shouted. But the intruder paid him no mind.

Their gaze wasn’t on Kotama or Ron—it was directed further inside the room.

Ron summoned glowing claws wrapped in lightning to both hands and lunged at the intruder.

But the intruder dodged the attack and threw several knives taken from their coat at Ron.

While Ron avoided the knives—just for a moment—

The intruder vanished from his line of sight.

Ron spun around—

The intruder had climbed the wall and was now leaping from the ceiling toward one person—

Their target was Rururii, still peacefully asleep amidst the chaos.

But Ron wasn’t the only one who noticed.

Sebas tried to shield Rururii’s small body with his own.

“Watch out!”

Ron shouted and slid in between the attacker and Sebas.

*Thunk*—a dull sound of flesh being pierced.

A knife stabbed deep into Ron’s left arm.

He withstood the intense pain. And with his free right hand, he struck the intruder’s side with a powerful blast of lightning.

“Urgh!”

The intruder groaned in pain.

But holding their wounded side, they still didn’t back down and drew a longsword.

Ron pulled out the knife from his arm.

Bl00d dripped heavily from the wound.

“Hya, R-Ron!? Th-the bl00d…!?”

Kotama covered her face with her hands. She was trembling.

(My left arm… no, half my body is going numb…!)

The knife must have been coated in poison.

The numbness spread through Ron’s body. And the glowing claws and lightning vanished.

The intruder didn’t miss that chance.

Judging Ron as the only real threat, they ignored everyone else and targeted him.

They swung their longsword at Ron.

Ron twisted his body to dodge. But he was being gradually pushed back toward the wall by the relentless attacks.

“This ends now.”

The intruder said coldly and raised their sword to decapitate Ron.

At that moment—

Lightning surged from under Ron’s feet and pierced the intruder’s chin from below.

“Urgh…”

The intruder lost consciousness on the spot and collapsed to the floor.

“Hmph, thinking you had me cornered was your fatal mistake…”

Muttering this, Ron also collapsed face down. He had used up all his strength.

Freyja burst into the room after hearing the commotion. Her sword was drawn.

“Th-the window… someone suspicious came in…!”

Sebas pointed at the collapsed intruder.

Freyja quickly grasped the situation—and noticed Ron lying on the floor.

“Ron!”

Before she could reach him, Kotama was already by Ron’s side. She was kneeling down.

“Ron! Stay with me!”

A soft magic circle of light appeared in her palm.

It was healing magic—Heal.

The light gently wrapped around Ron’s wound. It was slowly closing.

“K…Kotama…?”

With fading consciousness, Ron just barely managed to say her name.

During all that, Rururii had apparently woken up at some point. She let out a big sleepy yawn.

She lazily watched Kotama healing Ron.

“Hmm~? Kotama’s using Heal… Well, looks like he’s okay. Guess I’ll leave the rest to the youngsters~”

Saying that, she laid back down and started peacefully snoring again.

Whether she held back out of consideration for Kotama, or simply found it too bothersome—

Only Rururii herself knew the truth.
