When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 12
Episode 12
The Orc General took Jez’s fist head-on.
A huge hole opened up in its abdomen.
For a while, the Orc General stood there in a daze, but then, as if to say “unbelievable,” it shook its head a few times, glared at Jez, and then collapsed backward, gasping its last breath while still looking at him.
Amidst the momentary blankness that spread across the entire battlefield due to the shock, Jez, with a nonchalant expression, let out a few whistles.
Upon hearing the sound, his horse dashed towards him from the edge of the battlefield.
The goblins around Jez snapped back to their senses and tried to rush towards him, but just before that, he leaped onto the horse that had come running and dashed away from the center of the enemy lines.
As he ran towards Jamil, he called out, “I’m leaving the rest to you,” and then moved away from the battlefield.
Naturally, many goblins chased after Jez from behind towards Jamil’s direction.
In the adventurer community, this act, known as “train” or “aggro train,” was strictly forbidden.
However, in military operations, it could be adopted as a strategy, so it wasn’t strictly prohibited.
Nevertheless, Jamil, usually calm, was unusually angry, albeit rightfully so, as he dealt with the remaining goblin forces.
However, Jez judged that Jamil and the others would handle it fine based on their abilities and fighting spirit, so he passed on this matter.
…
A few minutes later, on the road between Kohane and Graysian.
The Al-Faz unit and the 101 riders, including Jez, had completed the total elimination of the monster army of about 500 and were resting while cleaning up the battlefield.
They gathered the corpses of monsters strewn all over, burned them, collected reusable arrows, and recovered some magical stones and valuable materials, making records of them.
The Al-Faz unit was equipped with valuable item boxes to make the most of their mobility, allowing them to carry these magical stones and materials within a certain range.
In the Tashman Kingdom, about 60% of the magical stones and materials obtained during military operations were deposited into the national treasury, and the remaining 40% were supplied to the unit.
The distribution ratio within each unit varied, but most units adopted an equal distribution system.
Opinions were divided on whether depositing 60% into the national treasury was too much or too little, but many considered it sufficient, as basic equipment, apart from daily food, housing, and special weapons, was supplied by the country or the military.
In fact, in the Tashman Kingdom, joining the military often brought in more income than making a living as an adventurer.
These measures led to an increase in the number of applicants for military enlistment and contributed to the improvement of their quality.
In the forefront nations, the situation might be different, but at least in the Tashman Kingdom, military-related jobs were considered prestigious.
Returning to the conversation, Jamil, while signing off on the battle results recorded by Jez and carefully checking the condition of weapons, arrows, personnel, and horses, looked at Jez, who was performing these post-battle tasks diligently with a very serious expression, and said in amazement, “Hey, it’s a bit late to put on that civil servant face now.”
“Well, no matter how you look at it, I’m still a civil servant, right?”
“…Indeed, the work you’re doing now is indeed that of a civil servant. Your accurate record-keeping and damage assessment are invaluable and timely.”
“Right?”
“However, seriously, where in the world can you find a civil servant who punches a hole in an Orc General with bare hands…”
“Well, there might be something like that somewhere?”
While Jamil continued to be amazed and banter with Jez while signing off on the battle results, he mentioned something obvious, prompting Jez to make a subtle expression.
“…I have to report this directly to the princess,” Jamil said as a matter of course, which was the first time Jez made a subtle expression.
“…Can’t we do something about that?”
“It’s impossible. And what have you been doing until now? It’s unreasonable to say that you’re just a civil servant.”
While feeling further exasperated by Jez’s reluctance, Jamil asked the obvious question.
Hearing Jez’s answer and seeing his subtle expression again, he said, “Oh, well…”
Although Jamil had heard that the Northern Frontline was a heavily contested area until a few years ago, he stopped probing further.
There was no need to force someone to talk about something they didn’t want to.
Besides, he had the family name “Norman.” It wasn’t appropriate for a mere hundred-man captain to pry into it.
Well, people have their reasons, he thought, while saying, “Well, never mind. Let’s head to Graysian as soon as possible. Fatima!!!”
Jamil, who ended the conversation with Jez, called for his vice-captain Fatima and proceeded to reconfirm the status of the unit. In this battle, there were almost zero casualties. The wear and tear on the weapons were also not an issue. Arrows were consumables, but there was no problem for continued combat.
“Alright, then we’ll depart in 15 minutes. Head towards Graysian. Be prepared for further encounters, as there may be more battles ahead!!!”
