When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 14
Episode 14
After arriving near Graysian with Jamil leading the Al-Faz’s unit and Jez’s group, they found themselves unable to approach the fortress city of Graysian.
As soon as they identified their affiliation with the army flag, a signal fire rose from the Graysian city walls, confirming their presence to the city’s defenders. With this, the 8th Corps also received information that the 7th Corps would arrive in Graysian within a few days, at the latest, within a week.
Having conveyed the most crucial information to the friendly forces conducting the siege, Jamil felt that the vanguard’s main objective had been accomplished but was hesitant about the next course of action.
In this situation, there were three major choices. The first was to return immediately to the main force of the 7th Corps, swiftly merge with them, and expedite their return to Graysian. The second was to maintain a standby posture near Graysian, keeping a distance from the monster army, and conduct reconnaissance in various areas to gather information about the enemy forces. And the third was to find a way to enter Graysian by some means.
After pondering these options, Jamil decided to consult with his adjutant Fatima and Jez.
“So, what do you think we should do? I want to hear your opinions,” Jamil asked, outlining the three options.
After hearing Jamil’s outline of the three options, Fatima, after a brief moment of thought, responded, “I think reporting to the main force of the 7th Corps is necessary. If we wait, the main force should arrive in about seven days, but if we return and report to the princess, we might be able to expedite their arrival by one or two days.”
While listening to Fatima’s opinion and nodding, Jamil also turned to Jez for confirmation. He hadn’t planned to ask civilians for their opinions on battlefield matters until recently, but he had reconsidered his thoughts due to the incident with the Orc General and his experiences on the Northern Front. Or rather, he still felt uncomfortable with the fact that a civilian had single-handedly defeated the Orc General, but that was beside the point.
Prompted by Jamil to speak, Jez, after a moment of thought and looking towards Graysian, said, “First, we need information. It’s strange that a fortress city like Graysian seems relatively intact despite being under siege. There are no signs of battle around the city perimeter from what I’ve seen.”
“Yeah, that’s been bothering me too. It’s as if they chose a siege as a last resort after being surrounded unexpectedly. Normally, if a large army were to attack a city, they would thin out the defenders before the siege began. Speaking of which, remember the monster army we encountered on the road? They were probably hiding with concealment magic, right? Maybe it’s a similar situation here,” Jamil added.
The discussion between Jamil, Jez, and Fatima continued for a while, with them sharing their available information and opinions. Afterward, Jamil made a decision.
“All right then, Fatima, I’ll assign you ten riders. You’ll be responsible for contacting the main force.”
“Understood.”
“And the remaining ninety riders, including Jez, will conduct reconnaissance around the large monster army. There should be a King-class creature in a force of this size, but it’s concerning that we haven’t found it. There might be enemy ambushes or reinforcements. Confirm that,” Jamil ordered.
“No objections,” they replied.
“Good. We’ll scout the Graysian outskirts for two or three days, and then we’ll attempt to enter Graysian at an opportune moment. The morale of the soldiers inside the city should still be high. Let’s begin our actions as planned. Fatima, I’m counting on you to contact the princess,” Jamil said.
“Yes, please take care, Captain,” Fatima replied.
After confirming their future plans, Jamil, Jez, and their group set off. Fatima and ten riders left the Al-Faz’s unit, returning to the direction of Kohane along the road they had come.
Meanwhile, Jamil and Jez’s group kept a certain distance from Graysian, deviating from the main road, and proceeded towards a location where they could just barely see the large enemy army.
—
Three days had passed since Graysian began its siege and Jamil and Jez’s group arrived near Graysian. The monster army besieging Graysian continued to launch sporadic attacks, all of which were repelled.
On the other hand, Jamil and Jez’s group continued their reconnaissance around Graysian, but they had not obtained any significant information despite the passage of time.
It was challenging to conduct reconnaissance while avoiding detection by the monster army deployed in the plains near Graysian, but even so, they couldn’t find anything. Could it be possible for a King-class creature not to be found in a force of this size? Jamil and his group were becoming increasingly frustrated.
“Despite these few days, we haven’t found any enemy ambushes, reinforcements, or even signs of the commanding monster of the monster army. Moreover, the monster army surrounding Graysian isn’t launching a proactive offensive… It’s unsettling,” Jamil remarked.
Agreeing with Jamil’s words, Jez nodded and suggested, “Why don’t we expand our search range? Although there’s some distance, the hills and forests in that area would be ideal for ambushes.”
“I agree. It might be too far to coordinate with the allied forces deployed near Graysian… but well, we’ve come this far. Let’s go and check it out. If there’s nothing, we’ll head back towards Graysian,” Jamil replied.
Ultimately, this single statement from Jez would greatly influence the course of the battle, saving Graysian.
