When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 19
Episode 19
Six days since Jez and the others set out from Kohane, and four days since their arrival near Graysian, on a night filled with darkness.
After destroying the tunnel and successfully escaping from the enemy’s territory, Jez, Jamil, and the others who had hastily constructed a makeshift campsite were discussing their future plans.
First, Jamil, relying on the flickering light of the campfire, began organizing the events thus far by drawing arrows and such on the ground with twigs.
“We set out from Kohane six days ago. Since then, we’ve been counting the days starting from when we left Kohane. On the third day, we encountered enemy ambushes along the road between Kohane and Graysian. We defeated them. Jez knocked out an Orc General with a single blow. Then, we continued our march and arrived at Graysian.”
Around Jamil, Jez, Teo, and the members of the Al-Faz’s unit were sitting cross-legged, drinking coffee while listening to Jamil’s recount.
“After arriving at Graysian, we raised our legion’s flag to signal our arrival to Graysian’s side. Then, we sent Fatima as a messenger.”
After a brief pause for confirmation, Jamil looked around at everyone and asked, “Does anyone have anything to add?” When everyone responded with no issues, he continued.
“Then, for three days, we conducted reconnaissance around Graysian, but found nothing. And that brings us to today. The sixth day since leaving Kohane, and the fourth day since arriving at Graysian. We encountered enemy ambushes. After sending Karim as a messenger, we destroyed the tunnel. And here we are now.”
After taking a sip of coffee, Jamil took a moment and said, “Looking back, it’s been quite a forced march. Everyone did well. I want everyone to rest properly tonight. Now, Jez, when do you think the princess will arrive?”
Listening attentively to Jamil’s serious tone, Jez pondered for a moment and replied, “At the earliest, she might arrive in Graysian the day after tomorrow. Originally, we were scheduled to arrive in Graysian from Kohane in ten days, but if we meet up with Fatima without any issues, we can shorten the march by two days.”
“Yeah, I agree with that assessment. The day after tomorrow seems to be the key point. So, what’s the plan for tomorrow?”
Confirming that his assessment aligned with Jez’s, Jamil thought for a moment. All the high-priority objectives, such as “prelude to Graysian,” “sabotage of enemy ambushes,” and “message to the 7th Legion main force,” had been accomplished.
Considering the forced march thus far, taking a day off tomorrow to rejuvenate seemed like a good idea. But there were some concerns.
“Jez, how are our supplies?”
“It’s getting tough. We’ve been marching pretty hard so far. Plus, we haven’t been able to resupply since arriving in Graysian. I’d like to get resupplied while we still have some energy left.”
Upon hearing Jez’s response, Jamil nodded once and looked at the surrounding subordinates again. Jamil himself felt fatigued, and the members of the squad also seemed somewhat tired.
Thinking it was only natural, Jamil judged that as long as everyone rested properly tonight, they should be able to move without any problems tomorrow. If the princess arrived as early as the day after tomorrow and the real battle began, he wanted to rest in a proper bed after resupplying before that time. Camping out for too long would only drain them.
And regarding that tunnel, despite destroying its entrance, it remained an eerie presence. He decided he wanted to inform Graysian about it as soon as possible. With that in mind, Jamil looked around and said,
“Let’s rest here tonight until tomorrow morning. After that, let’s advance to a position visible from within Graysian’s fortress city and see if we can somehow enter Graysian.”
—
The next afternoon, while inspecting the area outside Graysian’s walls, Finn Morgan, the commander of the 8th Legion, and Oscar Bailey, the commander of the 2nd Regiment, happened to spot friendly forces holding the flag of the 7th Legion beyond the enemy encampment surrounding Graysian.
“Oscar.”
“Yes, I see it.”
“What do you make of it?”
“It appears to be the same unit as the vanguard from the other day. Even if the main force from Kohane arrives, it won’t be until tomorrow at the earliest. They’ve been out of sight for the past few days, but showing up in a place visible to the enemy now might mean they have something to tell us.”
Upon hearing Oscar’s assessment, Finn nodded once and said, “I agree. It might be related to yesterday’s hill collapse. …But how do we make contact?”
Graysian was surrounded by enemies, and breaking through with a vanguard force of less than a hundred would be difficult. Sending a written message would be challenging considering the range. Now, what to do?
“Commander, please give me a chance.”
“Oh? How will you do it?”
“I’ll lead the 2nd Regiment. We’ll hold the area near the city gate with 1,000 infantry while 500 cavalry charge into the enemy camp. As soon as we join forces with the 7th Legion’s vanguard, we’ll promptly return.”
“…Very well, I entrust it to you. We’ll have the 3rd Regiment enter as reinforcements for the defense inside the city.”
“Thank you very much! I’ll prepare for the sortie!”
—
The 2nd Regiment of the 8th Legion, having completed their preparations, stood in orderly formation in front of the city gate, awaiting the signal. After all, the catalyst for this siege was their own misjudgment. Their morale was high as the opportunity to clear their name had arrived. Furthermore, after spending nearly a week solely on defense, there was a sense of pent-up frustration.
Amidst the fierce atmosphere of his subordinates, Oscar himself was the most fired up. And finally, the moment arrived. With the resounding sound of a large gong, the city gate that had been closed for almost a week began to open, and bridges were laid across the moat.
Amidst the commotion caused by the sudden development, as the demon army stationed outside the city began to stir,
“Let’s go! Charge!!! Charge with all our might!!!!”
Oscar Bailey spurred his horse at the forefront of the entire army, shouting a rallying cry, and was the first to charge out of the city. Rushing straight towards the demon army’s encampment, he swung his halberd and sent the demons flying.
“Follow me!!!!”
His roar echoed throughout the battlefield.
