When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 23
Episode 23
“So, if you’re that strong, couldn’t you have wiped out the enemy?”
Jez, Sofia, and their group safely reached Graysian Castle. After introducing themselves to each other, Sofia, feeling grateful for saving her and Clara’s lives, couldn’t help but inquire about several things that had been bothering her since earlier.
One of the first things she wanted to know about was the man’s combat prowess. With that much strength, he should be able to hold his own in significant battles alone.
“Yeah, about that. Simply put, my endurance in battles is extremely low,” he casually replied, as if it were nothing important. According to Jez, while he excelled at compressing magical power, he was extremely poor at releasing it. In fact, his poor release ability was what made him good at compression. It’s like a faucet with a clogged drainpipe.
Because of this, when he tries to release magic after compressing it, he can only unleash a massive blast, making it difficult to control. In other words, his fuel efficiency is exceptionally poor.
Due to his poor magic release ability, he can’t even use long-range magic properly. However, he compensates for this with incredibly powerful close-range attacks.
Considering these premises, he excels in hit-and-run tactics and decapitation operations against strong enemies, but he’s not well-suited for battles against numerous weaker enemies that involve movement.
In fact, since leaving Kohana, Jez has only used four powerful techniques: one against the Orc General encountered on the highway, another during the mountain thrust in the tunnel, and the seismic kick and earthquake just now.
Although he quickly dispatched the Orc Warriors on the highway, it was more like a warm-up for the single strike against the Orc General. Regardless, none of these battles lasted more than a minute. Jez couldn’t help but criticize his own combat style inwardly, likening it to a superhero.
Since arriving in Graysian, Jamil and the Al-Faz’s unit have been adept at dealing with minor threats. It’s worth noting that, despite their main armament being bows and having numerous attacks, the Al-Faz’s unit lacked the weight of a single strike, while Jez lacked endurance. However, they complemented each other well as a team.
For Jamil, it’s been like carrying around an explosive with unbelievable destructive power, protecting it, and then hurling it at the strongest enemy, waiting for it to explode for the past few days. However, he didn’t tell Jez about this feeling, as he thought it was a bit too much.
Hearing these explanations from Jez, Sofia couldn’t help but think, “What a brute force approach,” while continuing the conversation somewhat awkwardly.
“Thank you, that explains a lot. …Can I ask another question?”
“Huh? Of course, go ahead.”
“…Why are you wearing official attire?”
Clara and the members of the 8th Legion, who were listening to Sofia and Jez’s conversation nearby, nodded in agreement with that question. Seeing their somewhat obvious reaction, the members of the Al-Faz’s unit looked at them with lukewarm eyes.
“Why? Because I’m a bureaucrat, obviously,” Jez replied with an air that seemed to say there was no need for an answer.
Seeing Jez’s reaction, which was too obvious to warrant a response, Sofia looked at him with a slightly puzzled expression and thought, “Wait, am I wrong?”
“Jez, she seems puzzled,” Jamil said as he approached. Sofia, Jamil, and their party exchanged brief greetings. Seeing the confusion of the 8th Legion, Jamil explained with a wry smile.
“He’s actually a bureaucrat, attached to the staff of the 7th Legion. But, well, he seems to have a bit of excess power. By the way, he’s Princess René’s favorite.”
Despite Jamil’s explanation, the members of the 8th Legion remained somewhat skeptical, but upon hearing the last words, “Princess René’s favorite,” they reluctantly accepted it, albeit with some indigestion.
Seeing this exchange, Jez thought it was incomprehensible but decided not to interject any unnecessary comments. And just as things began to get a bit chaotic,
“Hey, isn’t that Jez? You’ve grown up so much!”
The commander of the 8th Legion, Finn Morgan, arrived.
As a postscript, Sofia and Clara, who were bombarded with questions from the women of the 8th Legion due to their spectacular rescue, left a blunt comment: “We were certainly curious about him, but our curiosity was in a different direction. His impact was too strong, and we don’t see him as a romantic interest at all.”
Subsequently, after depositing their horses and equipment at the 8th Legion base, the members of the Al-Faz’s unit, who hadn’t had a proper roof over their heads in about a week, went to rest in a room. However, Jamil and Jez were taken by Finn to the base command center.
“Come to think of it, is Gerald doing well?”
“Well, the last time I saw him was a few months ago. Father is as lively as ever.”
Walking and answering Finn’s question, Jez mentioned Gerald Norman. He’s Jez’s foster father and the head of the Norman Marchioness family. He’s also the commander guarding the Northern Front, known as the strongest man in the Tashman Kingdom and the last resort weapon of humanity.
“That guy seems like the type who wouldn’t die even if you killed him. So, what’s with Jez’s attire?”
“He’s wearing official clothing. He works as a bureaucrat.”
“Hmm? You’re a bureaucrat? …Ah, is it for your younger brothers?”
“Well, that’s part of it. But I also quite like the job itself.”
On the surface, it appeared to be a casual conversation between old neighbors who hadn’t seen each other in a while, but fragmentary pieces of important information could be heard in their dialogue.
Walking alongside them, Jamil couldn’t help but wear a subtle expression, as if to say, “Is it okay to listen to this? Or rather, I’d rather not hear anything unnecessary, especially if it involves noble families.”
