When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 25
Episode 25
And thus began a fateful day.
Graysian, having suffered a large-scale night assault, successfully repelled the enemy before dawn. While they couldn’t take down the enemy’s main forces, including the Orc King, they inflicted significant damage by hunting down a considerable number of monsters.
However, the 8th Legion suffered casualties as well. About 10% of the 3,000 soldiers from the 1st and 3rd regiments were either killed or wounded, which was quite a substantial loss from just one serious night assault. It was not a casualty count that could be overlooked. If the enemy continued to attack while disregarding their own losses, the 8th Legion might not last for more than a few days.
The formidable 8th Legion, known for its strength, had incurred such damage mainly due to the presence of the Orc King. The night assault began with a massive barrage of rocks, akin to indiscriminate bombardment by the Orc King, thrown at incredible speeds that almost reached the speed of sound, slamming into the walls of Graysian. The ensuing melee with the horde of monsters gathered around the damaged walls resulted in numerous casualties for the 8th Legion, putting them on the defensive from the outset.
Although the soldiers stationed on the walls had prepared anti-magic barriers against magical attacks, as well as defenses against arrows and small rocks, they were not prepared for such a massive barrage of attacks beyond their expectations.
Following this, with the direct involvement of regimental and army commanders like Finn Morgan, the 8th Legion managed to push back the enemy, apply makeshift repairs to the walls, and welcome the morning.
Upon hearing the details from Finn and the 1st and 3rd regiments, Jez and the others couldn’t help but wear serious expressions.
“…It was really quite serious, wasn’t it?”
“It’s hard to laugh in a situation like this.”
They were given quarters quite far from the attacked walls, making it difficult to hear the sounds of battle. Additionally, they were more fatigued than they had realized, and having entered the fortress city, they literally slept until morning, feeling as if they had fainted.
Despite the awkwardness of the situation, the members of the Al-Faz’s unit were not blamed by the 8th Legion’s personnel, who recognized their efforts and contributions.
Through this exchange, Jez found renewed determination.
—
In the afternoon, the enemy launched another large-scale assault. The Orc King had already been firmly monitored by Graysian’s side, and the formidable barrage of rocks he threw at incredible speed was blocked by expertly reinforced defenses.
During the day, Oscar’s 2nd regiment took the lead in defending the walls. However, their proud cavalry and chariot units were not suitable for a siege, so Sophia, Clara, and others hunted down enemies from the walls with bows and magic.
The members of the Al-Faz’s unit also dismounted and joined the defense with longbows and crossbows borrowed from the 8th Legion, contributing by accurately picking off enemies from the walls.
And what about us bureaucrats?
For the first time in a while, we were earnestly performing our bureaucratic duties. Partly because our abilities were not well-suited for defense, but also because following the attack on the 8th Legion the night before, there had been chaos in the supply, equipment maintenance, and situation assessment, so we were doing our best to restore order, along with the 8th Legion’s staff.
In a siege situation, cases of the situation collapsing often occur not only due to direct attacks by the enemy but also due to mismanagement of supplies within the fortress. Siege failure can result from such minor things as arrows not being where they should be.
To prevent this, Jez and the staff of the 8th Legion headquarters were running around Graysian with ledgers in hand, coordinating the situation on-site with the records and ensuring that supplies and equipment were delivered to the areas near the walls without shortages or excesses. Jez’s kanban system and visualization techniques at the headquarters undoubtedly proved useful.
After several hours of constant movement, Jez happened to be near the walls when cheers suddenly erupted.
Curious, he climbed up to the walls, and there, in his field of vision, was Princess René leading the 7th Legion, with their crimson regimental flag raised, marching orderly from the direction of Kohane.
—
“What, it’s already begun, hasn’t it?”
Princess René, with Graysian in sight, looked over the battlefield with such ease that one might mistake her for being late to a party.
“It seems to be quite a fierce battle. Glad we made it in time.”
Standing by the princess is Erin. Furthermore, around her are members of the Al-Faz’s unit, Fatima and Teo included. Upon seeing the arrival of Princess René’s group, the Graysian side, upon noticing both the 8th Legion and the 7th Legion flags raised on the walls, remarks, “It seems the captains have safely made it to Graysian.”
Fatima breathes a sigh of relief and murmurs, “It seems Jez and Jamil did well.” Princess René nods at her words and says, “They did their best. Now, shall I show them what I can do?” She flashes a fierce smile and gradually transitions into a combat stance, concealing within herself a vast amount of magic power. After a while, the air around her begins to distort as if with heat.
Seeing this, Erin shakes her head with a sigh but still asks for confirmation, “Your Highness? What shall we do?”
“Of course. It’s decided. We’ll wipe them all out. Let’s show these fools who dared to lay hands on our kingdom what fate awaits them.”
