When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 35
Episode 35
“Non-combatants, proceed to Kohane as planned! 9th Legion, fall back to the rear and rest! We’ll buy some time here for now!” Ethan Morris, of the 2nd Regiment of the 7th Legion, which had just merged with the heavily wounded 9th Legion, swiftly issued instructions.
Having received a briefing from Maria Valenti, the acting commander of the 9th Legion, about the situation so far and an accurate assessment of the enemy’s strength, Ethan was tasked with a highly challenging response: to somehow fend off the enemy’s main offensive while withdrawing non-combatants and the heavily wounded allies to the rear.
On the first day of the merger, utilizing the makeshift fortifications along the highway, they successfully dampened the enemy’s assault. With the enemy’s main force still inactive, they managed to withdraw without major casualties, proceeding with their tactical maneuvers.
Furthermore, on the second day, with some escorts and wounded soldiers from the 9th Legion, the non-combatants sent to Kohane successfully withdrew from the combat zone. This not only protected the non-combatants but also improved the situation from merely protecting them during the operation to one where they were outnumbered but not outgunned. Nevertheless, it remained an extremely challenging situation in a typical battle.
At this point, with a total of approximately 3,400 regular troops combined from the 1,400 members of the 2nd Regiment of the 7th Legion and the 2,000 combat-ready soldiers of the 9th Legion, they faced a retreat with only regular troops. Meanwhile, the enemy’s total force numbered around 90,000. Due to Elliot’s and the 9th Legion’ efforts, it was estimated that the enemy had suffered more than 10% casualties.
Ethan and Maria continued their retreat, utilizing the terrain and makeshift fortifications to fend off the enemy’s pressure. Ethan estimated that if the 10th Legion, dispatched from the capital, swiftly departed from Kohane, they could join forces within a few days. Furthermore, although the situation was unclear, according to information from Elliot’s suicide squad from the 9th Legion, they were also seeking reinforcements from Graysian. Therefore, Princess René and her group might also arrive as reinforcements in a few days.
At this stage, unbeknownst to Ethan and the others, Princess René had just received an urgent report and was setting out from Graysian at this very moment. Everything was beginning to align perfectly.
With the addition of the 5,000 troops from the 10th Legion, the combined forces of the 7th and 9th Legion totaling 3,400 soldiers, and potential reinforcements from Graysian, they would be able to overturn the disadvantage in numbers. Ethan would continue to patiently and tenaciously employ delicate military tactics, pulling on the slender thread of hope.
Two more days passed. The 2nd Regiment of the 7th Legion, which had entered as reinforcements, continued to engage the enemy’s massive force while retreating, resulting in significant losses. The soldiers of the 9th Legion had been in retreat for nearly a week, and Maria Valenti, who led them, was now merely commanding through sheer willpower.
To make matters worse, it seemed that the enemy’s main force had resumed its advance, and their pressure was steadily increasing. Despite managing to hold out until Kohane for a few more days, Ethan and Maria felt an extremely strong sense of impending crisis as the limit drew near.
Amidst the repeated assaults of the enemy’s main force, Ethan felt it was time to make a decisive move. As they continued their retreat along the main road from Bastiona to Kohane, the right side from their perspective, which was slightly obscured due to elevation differences when viewed from Bastiona, suddenly erupted with activity. It was a secondary route connecting to the main road.
“All forces, charge!!!!”
Suddenly, a cavalry unit surged towards the enemy’s large force. Their regimental flag was pitch black. Cheers erupted from around Ethan and Maria.
“It’s the 10th Legion!!!!”
While the cavalry unit assaulted the enemy, infantry units from the rear of the 7th and 9th Legion, advancing from the direction of Kohane, could be seen in an orderly manner.
Seeing this, Ethan and Maria, though feeling like collapsing from relief, began to move for coordination with the 10th Legion.
The pitch-black cavalry unit delivered a devastating flank attack on the enemy’s main force and continued to advance, cutting through the enemy lines. The 10th Legion, usually stationed in the capital as a reconnaissance unit along with the 1st Legion, was the vanguard when launching a counteroffensive into the territory of Tashman Kingdom. In other words, they were formidable.
While the personal valor and combat prowess of the corps commander, Gerald Norman, gave him the reputation of being the strongest, the 10th Legion surpassed others in versatility, striking power, and deployment capability. In a sense, the 10th Legion was like the marines.
And at the forefront of the assault cavalry unit, which the 10th Legion proudly boasts, wielding a magnificent greatsword, slicing through the hordes of monsters,
“Advance! Crush the enemy and fight for the glory of the kingdom! Fearlessly push forward! Follow me!!”
Commander of the 10th Legion, Serena Castillo. In her early thirties, she serves as the young head of the Castillo Ducal Family, which is related to the royal family, and is also a cousin to René Tashman by blood.
This Serena Castillo. She was the “admired older sister” to the young René in her childhood, and to René, who preached her mindset when she became corps commander, she was like a mentor.
The stage of the Southern Great Uprising finally sees the emergence of Serena Castillo, a cornerstone of the Tashman Kingdom’s strength, as all the actors assemble.
