When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 39
Episode 39
Jez, who defeated the Orc King with the Conceptual Armament, Pen is Mightier than Sword – Jabberwock. In Graysian, René and Lilly unleashed the strategic magic “Flame of Judgment,” and then Jez finished with a combo, while in Bastiona, Elliot defeated the opponent using the forbidden magic “Dedication of the End.” That opponent was the Orc King.
Such a formidable Conceptual Armament that easily defeated the Orc King. However, it’s not something that can be used without any risk.
“Hey, are you okay?”
After slaying the Orc King, Princess René called out to Jez, who was mumbling on horseback. Erin and Lilly were reinforcing their defenses around them, and the surrounding monsters were being annihilated one after another by Jamil and his group.
The Conceptual Armament Jez used had already self-destructed, and Jez himself was completely depleted of magic power.
“…Yes, I’m fine. It’s just that my magic ran out.”
According to the eccentric alchemist who gave Jez the replica Conceptual Armament, “It probably just absorbs magic power. I haven’t tested it, so I’m not sure. But don’t worry, it’s fine. Probably.”
Jez had used (fake) Conceptual Armaments several times in crucial moments before, but he always felt like something other than magic power was being absorbed.
Whether it was fatigue or weariness, his exhaustion was extraordinary.
However, thanks to Jez’s actions, the Orc King was defeated, and the monsters were being taken care of one by one. At this moment, time was the most valuable thing for the Tashman Kingdom’s faction.
That’s why Jez decided to use his trump card here, knowing that.
While keeping an eye on Jez’s condition, Princess René had been worried since earlier. Lilly, seeing her worried, teased René in her mind, thinking she could handle it. She watched without showing any expression, thinking, “Now’s the time to push! It’s a chance!”
“Will resting make you recover?”
“Yes, resting for half a day to a day should be fine. So let’s move on quickly.”
Although Jez was mumbling, his expression and demeanor were relatively normal, so René and the others around him were relieved to hear his self-report.
With the enemies eradicated almost simultaneously, the 1000 riders moved to a different location for a temporary break.
René and Jamil were talking to the members of the 78th War-Time Composite Legion, confirming the situation regarding casualties and losses.
As everyone dismounted, stretched their bodies, took light snacks, and checked their equipment and horses, Jez also got off his horse and sat down a little away from the group, staring blankly at his surroundings.
“What’s wrong with you?”
While pretending to be casual, Erin sat down next to him.
“Hmm? What are you talking about?”
“…Stop playing dumb. Something’s off, isn’t it? I should be able to tell at least that much.”
Erin’s sharp eyes, honed from her ability to use healing magic, were apparently not to be fooled. She had always been particularly sharp about Jez’s secrets.
Letting out a resigned sigh, Jez said, “The sensation in my right hand feels a bit weird. Oh well, it’s probably tendonitis from using the pen too much.”
“Stop saying stupid things and give me your hand already.”
Scolded by Erin, Jez fluttered his right hand and offered it. Erin caught his hand with both of hers and checked it. After a while, she activated healing magic.
She used healing magic to align the flow of magic and promote recovery. Soon, Jez felt the discomfort in his right hand disappear.
“Oh. You’re amazing, Erin. It’s back to normal already.”
“Yeah, yeah, you’re always in good spirits. But seriously, just say it instead of hiding it.”
With a slightly annoyed expression, Erin admonished Jez.
“And that Conceptual Armament, it’s the one Victor made, right? I told you not to use it anymore, didn’t I?”
Victor Alchemis. Heir to the prestigious Alchemis family and a maverick among alchemists. A classmate of Jez and Erin at the Royal Academy and a strange alchemist.
He was fundamentally lazy and eccentric, a drunken fool, but he was a genius alchemist who the world couldn’t handle, with talent that was top-notch.
Furthermore, as a human, Victor was considered a good or rather interesting guy, so he surprisingly had quite a few friends. He was a person with a mysterious charm. Of course, Jez was very close to him as well.
The combination of Jez and Victor was recognized as a troublesome duo even within the Royal Academy, and from that time on, Erin was somewhat cold towards Victor.
Putting that aside for now, after graduating, Victor initially found employment at the Academy as expected, but he quit his job promptly after quarreling with his boss. He then disappeared from the capital city and wandered around for a while before eventually settling in the provincial city of Arcanadia, where he opened his own shop.
Despite seeming to lack the talent for making money and facing difficulties in life, Victor occasionally came up with absurd products like (fake) Conceptual Armaments, which he would then sell to Jez and a few other customers for a decent price, thus sustaining his livelihood.
However, many of the items Victor created had effects and side effects that even he himself didn’t understand. Erin didn’t want Jez to use such items if possible.
Understanding this background, Jez sincerely apologized.
“My bad. But I think this was the best option at the moment, so please forgive me.”
“…I understand that too. But please remember that it worries me.”
“Yeah, I got it. Sorry for making you worry.”
After confirming that no one was paying attention to them, Erin gently rested her head on Jez’s shoulder as they sat side by side. Jez was briefly surprised by Erin’s unexpected gesture, but he didn’t react or mention it, and a quiet moment passed between them.
After a while, Erin stood up as if nothing had happened.
“All right, let’s do our best from here on out.”
She smiled at Jez.
