When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 5
Episode 5
The morning after Jez finished work on time and went drinking with the staff members of the headquarters, he promptly engaged in morning training with Rail and some other staff members before work.
“Well then, shall we wrap it up? Good work.”
“Thanks for your hard work, Jez-senpai. But surprisingly, it was within the bounds of common sense.”
After finishing the morning training, Jez cooled down in the training grounds when Rail, who had broken a refreshing sweat, approached him looking surprised.
The training started at 6 o’clock and ended at 7 o’clock. It consisted of about 30 minutes of light jogging followed by 30 minutes of muscle training and light mock battles.
Although Rail and the other staff members had braced themselves, thinking that the training from morning till night would be like hell due to Jez’s usual recklessness, they couldn’t help but feel relieved and curious when the training ended within the bounds of common sense.
“Well, collapsing from exhaustion before work would be counterproductive. Plus, Erin would scold us,” Jez gave a very sensible response. Rail and the others felt relieved to hear his words, but…
“Well, we’ll gradually increase the workload every day,” Jez muttered ominously, causing Rail to grimace. While preparing for the inevitable increase in workload from him.
On such a refreshing morning,
“Good morning, everyone! You’re all full of energy even in the morning,” Princess René, accompanied by Erin, arrived at the training grounds. The moment René’s voice was heard, Jez, who had attempted to bolt from the training grounds like a startled rabbit, was intercepted by René as she circled around him.
“Good morning, Jez Norman. It’s a beautiful morning, isn’t it?”
“…Good morning, Princess René. You look lovely as always.”
“Hmph. Thank you. By the way, don’t you think it’s rude to try to run away the moment someone arrives?”
“Oh no, not at all. I didn’t notice Princess René’s presence and was about to head to the shower.”
“Is there a need to dash so suddenly?”
“…Yes, I suddenly felt like sweating.”
Jez, who was convinced that nothing good would come out of the morning, tried his best to leave the training grounds, but was effortlessly read by Princess René.
Seeing Princess René’s grin, resembling that of a feline, Jez thought, “Oh, this isn’t good,” but attempted futile resistance. However,
“Erin, hand Norman a wooden sword.”
With Princess René’s words, Jez realized the course of events to follow.
“Yes, Your Highness. Here, Jez, good morning. This is a training wooden sword.”
As Erin approached and handed Jez the wooden sword, Jez, while examining it closely, was about to ask a feigned question.
“Your Highness? What’s this?”
But before he could finish, “Hah!” “Kuh!?” René, with a sudden step forward, struck Jez with the wooden sword, which he caught with another wooden sword. Then, bringing it to a stalemate, he asked, “Your Highness? What’s the sudden move?”
“Hehe, I intended it as a complete surprise attack, but you’re quite resilient, aren’t you?”
“Your Highness, could we at least have a conversation?”
Despite thinking that this person was overly energetic from the morning, Jez managed to fend off René’s attacks. Witnessing Jez’s actions, René gradually increased the intensity of the sword fight.
“Wonderful!! Can you keep up with this?! Then how about this?!”
Although René, having grasped the basic specifications of Jez such as being able to ride a horse, defeat bandits, and having sufficient physical strength for marching, didn’t know how skilled he was with a sword. Therefore, she decided to engage with him after happening to see him at the training grounds, and it turned out to be more rewarding than she had expected.
After exchanging a few blows, René, who seemed to have calmed down slightly, stepped back from Jez.
“I never expected an official from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to be this skilled. Impressive. But well, he doesn’t seem to be a first-rate swordsman after all,” she said with a slightly disappointed expression as she looked at Jez. It’s sudden, but Princess René is a genius with the sword. It was because of this martial talent and overwhelming charisma that she, at the age of 20, was entrusted with the position of corps commander, which was unprecedented even for royalty.
Even from her perspective, Jez was certainly strong, but conversely, that’s about it.
Though disappointed internally that he wasn’t as remarkable as rumored by the officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the corps commanders from the northern regions, she reluctantly acknowledged that it’s inevitable for rumors to be exaggerated.
Jez was completely unaware of the underlying circumstances, but initially, the plan was for him to support the Southern Front, centered around the 7th Legion, part-time. After assessing his suitability, the decision on transferring to the 7th Legion was intended to be made. However, due to the impact of their initial encounter and the good relationship with Erin, the decision on the transfer was expedited based on her intuition.
Regardless, it was understood from the reports of this past week that his real talent lies in administrative abilities. Originally, the workload for administrative tasks in the 7th Legion was so intense that they had to request reinforcements from the central command. In this regard alone, the Ministry of Internal Affairs had done a good job. The princess was beginning to lose interest in Jez’s actions, but Erin noticed this and said a word.
“Princess, Jez hardly ever uses a sword.”
Upon hearing Erin’s words, Princess René redirected her interest towards Jez once again, saying, “Oh?” Jez, realizing that the princess’s interest was drifting away from him, glared at Erin, muttering, “Erin, you… always say unnecessary things!!” But it was already too late.
“Jez Norman. Is that true?”
“…Yes, well, I hardly use a sword. In fact, as a civil servant, I adhere to the principle of not wielding anything heavier than a pen.”
