When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 9
Episode 9
Literally the frontline city on the southern front, Graysian. It was one of the fortress cities positioned at the forefront not only of the Tashman Kingdom but of the entire human survival zone.
There were no large cities inhabited by people further south than the fortress city of Graysian.
Originally, it was a city that spontaneously developed as adventurers and merchants seeking precious materials settled, but later it was developed by the country as a fortress city.
The 8th Legion was stationed in Graysian, making it a unique city where urban functions and legion base functions were essentially integrated.
About three months ago, the members of the 8th Legion noticed that monster activity was becoming more active and requested reinforcements from the central command and the 7th Legion.
Princess René led the approximately 1,500-strong 1st Regiment of the 7th Legion from the central city of Kohane toward Graysian. For a force of this size, the distance from Kohane to Graysian was about a 10-day journey.
As a precursor, Princess René sent ahead a detachment of 100 plus 1 cavalry to Graysian. By chance, this 101 cavalry, later known as the “Elusive 101,” would become a recognizable unit just by the number “101,” a fact unknown to anyone at this point.
Returning to the story, excluding the +1, this unit of 100 cavalry was a rare mounted unit within the 1st Regiment, and it was one of the strongest units in the entire 7th Legion. In contention for this position of strength was the Royal Guard’s Hundred, under Princess René’s direct command.
Leading this unit was Jamil Al-Faz. He was a genius in horsemanship, as if he were born to ride.
Two days had passed since Al-Faz’s unit had departed from Princess René’s main force. It was a forced march scheduled to cover the distance in 3 days, which would normally take 10 days.
The next day, they had already reached the distance to Graysian, and they began preparing for the night’s rest with some ease.
“All right, that’s it for today! Start preparing for the bivouac!”
(Note:”Bivouac” refers to a temporary camp or shelter used by soldiers or travelers, typically without tents or coverings. It’s often set up quickly and can be makeshift in nature, providing basic protection from the elements.)
After giving the order to his unit, Jamil approached Jez in a relaxed manner.
“Jez! How are you feeling?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Everything has been going smoothly so far.”
Jamil and Jez had met during the morning physical training and had become quite friendly over the past month since Jez was assigned to the 7th Legion base.
While cavalry units were very attractive due to their mobility and striking power, they were also very costly to maintain and manage. Consequently, the commanders of cavalry units often had frequent interactions with civil officials, which was somewhat unexpected.
Moreover, Al-Faz’s unit was Princess René’s high-speed mobile unit. Naturally, Jez and Jamil had developed a close relationship.
“But seriously, you’re a strange one. I thought I understood, but it’s surprising to see civil officials like you keeping up with our movements. Why aren’t you a military officer?”
Despite having traveled non-stop for two full days, even with the night bivouac in between, Jamil looked somewhat amazed to see Jez still energetic.
“And you’ve been perfect with guiding and supplying along the way. I’m impressed, but also a little surprised.”
Normally, Jamil would make decisions on the movement route, resupply, and pace distribution for Al-Faz’s unit, but for this march, logistics were left to Jez, given his presence on the journey.
“Well, adjustment and preparation are my main duties. Although recently, I’ve been caught up with the princess, so it’s been a bit hectic.”
And Jez, while complaining, tended to the horses. Seeing this, Jamil laughed and said, “Don’t say that. It’s rare to see Princess René so cheerful, isn’t it?”
“Is that so?” Jez asked.
“Yeah. She might be trying to hide it, but she was really enthusiastic around the time she arrived at the 7th Legion. She’s been getting better lately, though.”
“Hmm, really? That’s surprising.”
“Well, I understand her feelings. Imagine suddenly being responsible for the lives of 5,000 people at the age of 20? Even for royalty, it’s tough.”
Taking advantage of Princess René not being nearby, Jamil and Jez engaged in conversation.
“So, well, the captains like us try to support her as much as we can.”
Upon hearing about Princess René’s unexpected side, Jez inwardly tilted his head slightly but nodded in agreement, saying, “I see.”
“Well, anyway, if Jez is keeping the princess company, it makes us feel warm and fuzzy,” Jamil said, laughing in a completely nonchalant tone as he patted Jez on the shoulder. “I’ll go back to setting up camp. Make sure to get some good rest!”
With that, Jamil returned to commanding the unit.
—
The next day, after the night’s rest passed without incident, the 101 cavalry, led by Al-Faz’s unit and Jez, continued their gallop toward Graysian from early morning.
At the forefront rode Fatima Kazumi, a female knight belonging to Al-Faz’s unit and serving as Jamil’s adjutant.
As she had the keenest senses in Al-Faz’s unit, she often took the lead. Suddenly, she signaled for the entire army to halt.
“Fatima! What’s wrong?” Jamil and Jez, who were in the center of the unit, ran over to Fatima, who had a very stern expression.
“Captain, smoke and noise are coming from Graysian,” Fatima said.
Upon hearing Fatima’s words, everyone in Al-Faz’s unit tightened their expressions. Confirming the situation, Jamil said, “I heard! The situation is still unclear, but there’s a high possibility that Graysian is experiencing some kind of anomaly!! Let’s take a brief break here. Get your equipment ready!! Once preparations are complete, Al-Faz’s unit will move to Graysian in combat formation!!”
