Episode 47, Part 2: The Royal Capital Arc
Nevorista, the capital of the Tashman Kingdom. A colossal city located slightly westward in the heart of the Tashman Kingdom, ranking among the largest cities on the continent.
Originally, it had its origins as a typical fortress city found anywhere, and the old fortified city has now become the current royal palace and administrative district.
Development of new districts surrounding the old fortified city has progressed rapidly, shaping the present-day Nevorista.
One might wonder: would a mere military state’s capital expand to such a massive extent? This point raises questions even among foreign students studying the history of the Tashman Kingdom.
The Tashman Kingdom is widely known as a military state, as befitting the forefront nation of humanity, and indeed, it is. However, it also had another facet.
It was also known as the strongest trading nation on the continent. While the Tashman Kingdom constantly battled against monsters due to its status as a forefront nation, this ongoing conflict made it a major exporter of valuable resources such as magic stones and monster materials.
In particular, magic stones are indispensable as part of the energy infrastructure for daily life. Additionally, besides monster materials, numerous valuable minerals are also produced in monster territories.
Especially on the Northern Front, where mineral resources are abundant, many monsters are attracted to these resources. In response, humans have also strengthened themselves, resulting in a cycle where the Norman Marchioness family, a prominent lineage, emerged.
Similarly, cities like Graysian and Bastiona, which became battlegrounds during the Southern Disturbance, were known not only as forefront cities but also as the primary sources of materials, not just within the Tashman Kingdom but throughout the continent.
Therefore, despite being dangerous frontline cities, they also became fortress cities with tens of thousands of non-combatants. The reason René, Serena, Maria, and others rushed to recapture Bastiona lies here.
Namely, if Bastiona remained lost, an energy crisis could occur not only in the Tashman Kingdom but also among the continent’s nations.
Naturally, there were reserves, and increasing production in other areas could compensate to some extent. However, if a frontline city fell, the financial market could become unstable, leading to fluctuations in the prices of mineral resources such as magic stones.
From this perspective, the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Legion urgently sought to recapture Bastiona.
Thus, despite the immense sacrifices, the Southern Great Uprising concluded with a complete victory for humanity, thanks to the swift response of the Tashman Kingdom.
Everyone was happy! Or so one would like to say, but…
“What in the world is this report?!”
At the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the old fortified city, now part of the administrative district, a young female bureaucrat was in a frenzy, holding a certain report in front of Minister Eva Robbins.
“A civilian acting alongside a reconnaissance cavalry and single-handedly slaying an Orc General? Then, detecting enemy ambushes and destroying mountains with fists?! Furthermore, rescuing Her Highness from the Orc King’s attack and defeating him with a combo move?! …Are you kidding me?!!”
She was banging on what would later be called the “Zwey Document,” a suspicious document. …I beg your pardon, I misspoke. It was the formal report prepared by Hugo Zwey, Chief of Staff of the 7th Legion.
“And to top it off! Why does it say that this was done by Senior Jez?! I don’t understand at all!!”
Cynthia Clark, who had been boiling with rage and turning red in front of Minister Eva Robbins since earlier.
She was one of Eva’s secretaries, a young bureaucrat in her second year after graduating, and Jez Norman was her mentor.
“In the first place, Senior Jez was sent on a business trip to Kohane as a liaison officer, right?! Why did he go to the frontline?! …And besides, a distinguished bureaucrat like Senior Jez wouldn’t engage in battles, right?!”
Yes. Cynthia Clark. She greatly admired Senior Jez Norman as a senior mentor, a bureaucrat, and as an individual of the opposite sex.
When she had just graduated from the Royal Academy and was assigned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, she was a lively, spirited individual, but he patiently advised her and taught her the job with care. It didn’t take long for them to become personally close.
For Cynthia, Jez Norman was truly the epitome of the ideal bureaucrat she aspired to be. That wonderful senior would never do such incomprehensible and absurd things!
“What in the world is this report?!!”
Although expressed with different tones, many young to mid-level bureaucrats who saw the “Zwey Document” shared similar sentiments.
Jez Norman. While there were aspects that rubbed people the wrong way, colleagues and junior bureaucrats relied heavily on him, more than one would expect.
On the other hand, those in mid-level positions or higher, upon reading this report, burst into laughter first and then felt sorry for Hugo, the Chief of Staff of the 7th Legion, who had to write it under his name.
Thus, after a few days had passed since the delivery of the “Zwey Document,” which threw the entire administrative structure into chaos, Jez Norman returned to the capital for the first time in several months.
