When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 62
Episode 62
Cynthia finished work on time and left the office with Jez. Jez’s desk was allowed to remain in the office, thanks to the arrangement made by Minister of Internal Affairs Eva Robbins.
Together, Jez and Cynthia went to the market. It was crowded in the twilight as they bought ingredients. Before Jez went on a business trip to Kohane, they occasionally spent time like this together.
Cynthia, who had just graduated from the Royal Academy and joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs, used to be very assertive. Jez wanted to show her how different the current situation was compared to when she used to say, “I keep work and private life separate.”
While Jez thought about such things, he, being a wise bureaucrat who had learned from past experiences that unnecessary remarks could be detrimental, quietly accompanied Cynthia in shopping.
After finishing shopping, they went back to the official residence together. It had been months since they were last there. Jez’s house was originally minimalistic and well-organized, but after being empty for several months, it needed tidying up.
They decided to quickly clean the house. Jez apologized to Cynthia for making her help, but they both quickly tidied up.
After ventilating the house and finishing cleaning in about ten minutes, they were about to start preparing dinner when Jez suddenly exclaimed, “Oh.”
“Senpai? What’s wrong?”
Jez, who had been checking the refrigerator and pantry in the room, muttered, “I forgot.” Cynthia, who was about to prepare dinner while wearing the men’s apron she borrowed from Jez, looked at him curiously and asked, “What is it?”
“Oh, we don’t have any alcohol. I’ll go buy some. What kind of wine do you like, Cynthia?”
With her arms crossed, Cynthia, while resting her chin on her hand, pondered for a moment and said, “Then let’s go with white wine! A refreshing white would go well with today’s menu.”
“Got it. Can you get things ready while I’m out?”
And so, the situation was set.
After chatting with the familiar old man at the liquor store for a while, the bureaucrat, who had been recommended white wine by the old man along with several beers, returned home with the purchases.
With one hand holding the bags, he rang the doorbell of his home, thinking that Cynthia would come out. After waiting for a while, the door opened with fluttering footsteps.
“Welcome back, Lord Norman!”
For some reason, Lilly Johnson, René’s aide and captain of the Royal Guards, greeted them. Jez, who couldn’t understand the situation, reacted with just a “Huh?” Lilly smiled at Jez’s reaction and said, “I’m sorry to suddenly ask, but I need your help.”
While sweating profusely, she managed to smile, exhibiting a skillful act. Seeing this, the bureaucrat sensed danger in an instant and tried to escape like a rabbit, but Lilly grabbed his arm firmly, and he couldn’t escape. It was definitely not going to end well. The alarm bells of danger rang in Jez’s mind, but…
“Lilly, what are you doing?”
René, suspicious of Lilly’s prolonged absence from the entrance, came out of the room to the entrance.
“Huh? Oh?”
How would you feel if your boss suddenly showed up at your home? Jez was feeling exactly like that now. This was not Jez’s fault.
“Do you think your reaction is not too harsh when you see someone’s face? Even I can get hurt, you know?”
René teased Jez with a carnivorous smile. Seeing this, Jez, who had given up on various things, suggested, “Let’s go to the living room for now since making noise at the entrance is disturbing to the neighbors.”
And so, a modest home party began at the bureaucrat’s house.
Surprisingly, once it started, it became a pleasant and enjoyable time. René, 22, Lilly, 22, Cynthia, 20, and Jez, 26, were all already working adults, and their similar ages made the conversation flow smoothly.
The food prepared by Cynthia was delicious, and the snacks brought by René and Lilly were also tasty. The wine and beer bought by Jez matched the meal, and they were consumed quickly.
Initially, Jez couldn’t understand why René and Lilly were here, but he decided to stop worrying about it halfway through.
And what Jez was most relieved about was Lilly’s composure. Despite being internally flustered, she appeared calm on the surface. She served dishes with great care. However…
During a moment, Jez and Cynthia were alone in the kitchen. When Cynthia was doing chores such as clearing the dishes, she pouted slightly and muttered softly, “I know it’s not your fault, senpai. But next time, let’s do it with just the two of us, okay?”
Hearing this, Jez scratched his head, pondering how to respond, and finally said, “Yeah.”
And Jez responded with a safe answer. He had become somewhat bewildered by Cynthia’s increasing fondness for him, which had started at some point.
—
In no time, it was time to wrap up the home party, which appeared very harmonious on the surface. Although Lilly knew that it wasn’t appropriate to cause trouble even at someone’s home, she watched over with a painful stomachache.
Without a solid plan, this might end badly for Princess René. Moreover, Cynthia, being a good girl and a former colleague until recently, was the closest to Jez at the moment. Lilly calmly reassessed the situation unnecessarily.
As it was getting late, René and Lilly decided to return to the palace. Cynthia would go back to her single female officer quarters, and Jez was supposed to accompany her part of the way.
And thus, the home party at Jez’s place surprisingly ended smoothly.
After parting ways with Jez, Cynthia walked down the dark night road in high spirits. Today, despite being disturbed by the princess and Lady Johnson, they had made the next appointment, so overall, it wasn’t bad.
Since it was getting late, she decided to take a shortcut and hurry back home. After all, she had work as usual tomorrow.
She needed to remove her makeup and prepare for tomorrow’s bento. She also wanted to take a shower soon.
Despite walking in high spirits, Cynthia suddenly noticed something.
“Hmm?”
In the deserted night street, the sound suddenly disappeared. Complete silence enveloped the area, as if this back alley had been disconnected from the world.
“What’s this? A soundproof barrier?”
As Cynthia looked around nervously, five suspicious figures dressed in black suddenly appeared around her from nowhere.
“Huh?”
It was clear that something bad was happening. She needed to escape quickly, but her legs froze, and she couldn’t move. Seeing Cynthia’s state, the suspicious figures approached menacingly.
The figures in black’s goal was to capture anyone associated with Jez Norman. While Jez Norman himself and those around him were guarded by extraordinary individuals, they had finally found an accessible target here.
Cynthia Clark, a young bureaucrat from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They needed to capture this woman and leave the country immediately. The soundproof barrier wouldn’t last forever. As one of the men in black reached out to grab Cynthia, his arm slipped off.
The man in black couldn’t scream. The other four momentarily raised their guard.
“Quiet down.”
With a chillingly calm voice, Cynthia swung her arm lightly, and the man’s head fell off.
The men in black, still not understanding what had happened, were attacked by Cynthia and one of them with a penetrating blow, were pierced by the throat with her magically-enhanced hand, then severed his head. Crimson blood sprayed in the alley. The second one.
Continuing, she slipped behind the third assailant and took him down with a swift neck break. As he collapsed unconscious with a dull sound, Cynthia’s next targets were the remaining two attackers.
Attempting to retreat, they found themselves unable to move. Silent and struggling, they realized wires made of steel were spread all around them.
Garrote wires.
(Note: Garrote wires are thin, strong cords often used for strangulation or silent assassination. They are typically made of wire or other durable materials and are designed to be wrapped around a victim’s neck and tightened to cut off airflow)
It was too late. With a slight movement of her fingers, Cynthia severed the heads of the two men. At the same time, noise returned to the alley.
In the moonlight, on the deserted night street, amidst the scattered fresh blood and the fallen bodies of the five men, stood a woman, expressionless yet composed.
She snapped her fingers.
From nowhere, more than ten suspicious figures wearing masks appeared around her.
And when the numbers were complete, these figures, who surrounded Cynthia, knelt simultaneously. Glancing at them, Cynthia issued instructions dispassionately.
“Clean up. And the one over there, he’s still alive, so make sure to extract information from him.”
“Yes, understood, Lady Cynthia.”
The masked figures responded obediently to their master’s instructions. As they quietly began the cleanup, Cynthia, expressionless, left the scene.
And as if nothing had happened, she walked down the path and returned home. Then,
“Well, it’s going to be an early day tomorrow! Gotta get to bed soon!”
In an instant, the expressionless face from earlier vanished, and Cynthia regained her lively demeanor, as if she were back with Jez and the others. She cheered up with a bright smile and renewed determination.
Cynthia Clark. A young bureaucrat from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. And also a centurion belonging to the Tashman Kingdom’s clandestine organization, the special task force “0th Legion.”
