When I was working as a civil servant, I was found out to be a muscle-brained knight by the princess knight and got sent to the front lines - Episode 88
Episode 88
The King’s city-scale conceptual armament had been activated, and René, Maria, and Jez, who had been directly assigned by the King to subdue the dragon, rushed out of the council hall. Following them, Erin, Lilly, and some of the royal guards and soldiers also deployed outside the hall. Lilly’s unit and part of the 9th Legion led by Maria were already fully prepared outside. A formidable force of nearly 300 elite soldiers was ready to face the dragon.
As seen from the open spaces and windows inside the council hall, a massive dragon had appeared atop the hall. Its majestic presence and overwhelming aura were fitting for a king of all living beings, floating in the skies of the Tashman Kingdom.
Dragons were legendary creatures within the Tashman Kingdom, and indeed, throughout the entire Azelion continent. Rarely encountered, their existence was passed down through legends across the lands. Adventurers, merchants, and explorers venturing beyond the human frontier reported sightings of these creatures. Even in the Tashman Kingdom, a dragon encounter was an extraordinarily rare event, happening perhaps once every few decades. Notably, these encounters always coincided with the kingdom’s attempts to expand its frontier and establish new cities.
The battles between the Tashman Kingdom and dragons were always fierce, often resulting in significant losses and occasionally leading to the abandonment of frontier cities. However, those who managed to slay dragons were revered as Dragon Slayers. Their honor was preserved for eternity. The expansion of the human survival zone was a direct result of these battles.
In the Tashman Kingdom, the emergence of a Dragon Slayer signified the establishment of a new frontier city and the expansion of human territory. As human territory expanded, so did the kingdom’s strength and the number of areas needing protection.
Thus, there have been ten Dragon Slayers in Tashman Kingdom’s history, each founding a new legion. The commanders of the existing 1st to 10th Legions were all Dragon Slayers. For instance, the 1st Legion was founded by the future head of the Tashman family. He led his forces to slay a dragon, thereby establishing the kingdom. Initially, the king also served as the commander of the 1st Legion. Later, the second Dragon Slayer emerged, expanding the kingdom’s territory further and founding the 2nd Legion by splitting from the 1st Legion to defend the new lands. This change marked the end of direct command by the king over the 1st Legion, which was then led by the crown prince.
As history progressed, more Dragon Slayers appeared. They contributed to expanding the human survival zone further. Not all Dragon Slayers were originally from the Tashman Kingdom; some were royalty or generals from allied city-states who later joined the kingdom after slaying a dragon.
Dragons were the strongest creatures slain by those who left their mark on Tashman Kingdom’s history. And now, such a dragon stood before them. A dragon appearing in the capital city of Nevorista since the kingdom’s founding underscored the gravity of the situation. Those deployed outside the council hall recognized the seriousness of the matter when seeing the dragon restrained in the sky.
The dragon was floating in the air and struggling to break free. It was still restrained by King Ramses’ city-scale conceptual armament, the Golden City S.P.Q.R. Time was of the essence.
René made a quick decision and issued orders swiftly.
“Lilly and your unit, create a strong barrier to prevent the dragon from escaping and to block stray attacks from the dragon.”
“Understood!”
Lilly and the members of the 7th Legion’s Guard Centuria, who usually supported René, moved in unison and began deploying a strong barrier using their special round shields. Watching this, René continued giving commands.
“Maria, take the remaining units and attack the dragon. Start the assault immediately.”
“Understood.”
Given the emergency, Maria had joined René’s command to avoid confusion in the chain of command. Hearing René’s instructions, she led the 9th Legion, the royal guard, and the security forces to launch a coordinated attack on the dragon.
That left René, Erin, and Jez. Jez and Erin looked to René, wondering what to do next. René grinned and said, “We’ll attack the dragon directly.”
—
Maria’s unit unleashed heavy anti-air fire on the dragon, while Lilly’s unit established a strong barrier to block both physical and magical stray shots. Despite the spectacular explosions repeatedly detonating above the kingdom’s council hall, Maria noticed that the attacks from the ground seemed to have little effect on the dragon. The binding magic on the dragon was starting to weaken, and its movements were gradually becoming more free.
Although the barrier was already in place, fighting the dragon in such a location seemed arduous. Just as she considered the difficulty, Maria sensed a sudden surge of explosive magical power from behind her. There stood René Tashman, with blue flaming wings, azure hair, and sapphire-like eyes, wielding the Flame Sovereign. The sword was burning with intense blue flames.
In the earlier battle of the Graysian Campaign during the Southern Uprising, René had used a Ninth-tier strategic magic, Flame of Judgement, supported by Lilly’s Guard Centuria. That time, her wings, hair, and eyes were crimson flames, summoning a massive pillar of fire that reached the heavens. Now, in contrast, her flames were a pure, serene blue.
The magic used at Graysian was for wide-area suppression. This time, she needed magic to destroy a single entity. Thus, she realized the Ninth-tier tactical magic, Azure Flame’s Retribution, a high-density blue flame.
The Flame Sovereign appeared to be its usual size, but it was imbued with ultra-high-density magic power. It was thanks to the support from Erin and Jez. The dragon finally broke free from its restraints and started to move freely. However,
An azure angel, a beautiful embodiment of divine presence soared through the sky with flaming wings like a messenger from a tale.
“Hahahahahahaha!!!! How about this!!!!!”
With a high-spirited, almost maniacal laugh that shattered the solemn atmosphere, René slashed at the dragon.
