When My Contract with the Misanthropic Duke Ended, I Filed For Divorce, But My Husband's Obsession and Doting Became Unbearable - Chapter 22
When I woke up next, my divorce had already been finalized, and it was decided that I’d be living in the royal castle… Well, that was a bit overwhelming, but for now, I just wanted to deal with this ridiculous situation.
“How about becoming an adopted child of the royal family instead?”
“As expected of you, Brother! I think that’s a great idea too!”
“It’s not something that can be done so easily, though…”
“Even if we go through with an adoption, I will be the one to take Sharon, so it would be meaningless.”
The people gathered here—His Highness the Crown Prince, Reed, His Majesty the King, and the Duke—were way too high-ranking. I was the only one lying in bed, feeling ridiculously out of place and guilty.
When I woke up, I was already surrounded by them and thought some kind of ritual was about to begin.
Even if they came to tell me something, why this group of people? There’s no way they’re all this free…
“Um… becoming royalty is a bit too much for me.”
I had a strong feeling that if I stayed quiet, things would spiral out of control, so I mustered up some courage to speak.
All their gazes turned toward me, and even though I hadn’t done anything wrong, cold sweat started forming on my back.
“True, it might be tough getting used to being royalty after being a baron.”
“Ah, haha…”
With all due respect, Your Highness, I have no intention of ever getting used to that. Or becoming one in the first place.
“It’s fine, it’s fine! You just have to act confident and bossy!”
“…I see.”
What nonsense. Reed was clearly joking, so the best thing to do was pretend I didn’t hear him.
Still, since His Majesty was right there, I at least gave a polite reply.
“There are too many differences, so it’s bound to be difficult. If you truly wish to do it, it’ll take a great deal of effort.
Of course, since Reed and the others support it, we’d help you… but if it feels too heavy a burden, you should give up.”
“It feels extremely heavy, so really, I’m fine.”
I was genuinely relieved that His Majesty was a reasonable person.
“No need to worry. In the end, Sharon’s family will still become a ducal house.”
The Duke, however, seemed to be talking about something entirely different… Maybe he still believed the divorce was real? I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was already imagining a remarriage.
Well… that thought wasn’t unpleasant.
“For someone who just got divorced, you sure sound confident.”
“I’ve already reflected and regretted it enough. Now I’m more determined than anyone.”
Reed and the Duke glared at each other. Apparently, those two didn’t get along very well… probably because of me. If possible, I hoped that someday they could improve their relationship. Their positions meant they couldn’t completely avoid each other anyway.
“Well, I hope you’ll prove yourself from now on. I’m not as soft as Sharon, you know?”
“I welcome the challenge.”
At this point, Reed was starting to look more like my father. Watching the two of them, I couldn’t even decide whom to cheer for—so all I could do was sit there quietly and watch.
