When My Contract with the Misanthropic Duke Ended, I Filed For Divorce, But My Husband's Obsession and Doting Became Unbearable - Chapter 29
“I’m disappointed… but I don’t want to do anything that Sharon dislikes. Anyway, it’s almost time. Is that still here?”
The sweet Duke turned his eyes toward the butler again, maybe because it was almost time for work. Why does he care that much? The butler didn’t seem even the slightest bit interested in me.
“…It’s an order. And I won’t be chosen as a marriage candidate, so there’s no need to worry.”
That’s completely true. It’s a direct order from Reed, so no matter what the Duke says, it’s not like the butler can do anything about it. The Duke probably knows that, but still… I have to say, the butler’s ability to keep calm and answer him properly is really impressive.
He’s like the perfect example of a butler.
“Of course I won’t let him be chosen. I’ll also make sure no one else is allowed to meet with her.”
While I was admiring the butler, the Duke said something unbelievable. I don’t even know if Reed really plans to arrange any matches, but if he does, the Duke sounds like he’s ready to interfere somehow.
He really doesn’t have to worry that much… but still, knowing he cares about me that deeply makes me kind of happy.
Ahhh… maybe the Duke really is a genius at making me happy!?
No, wait. I’m just too easy to please. I know I’m weak to this kind of thing, so I need to stay calm.
People don’t change that easily. Even though watching the Duke right now makes me start to doubt that, I still believe it—yeah.
“Um, Duke— I mean, my lord, please do your best at work. Since Reed trusts the butler, there’s no need to worry.”
“That’s exactly why I’m worried… but if Sharon is cheering for me, then I have no choice but to do my best. By the way, if I work hard, will I get a reward from you?”
“R–reward?”
I’m already being taken care of at the royal castle, so what could I possibly give as a reward? The Duke could have anything he wants. I can’t imagine I could prepare something that would make him happy. And asking Reed for help would be too awkward.
“A kiss on the cheek from Sharon… that alone would take away all my fatigue.”
“K–kiss!?”
How is that supposed to be a reward!? His unexpected suggestion made me let out a startled voice. Could I really bring myself to kiss him—even if it’s just on the cheek? And would that really make him happy? My mind was spinning.
“Then, I’ll look forward to it.”
“W–wait, I didn’t—”
Before I could even answer, he just decided it himself! Am I really going to have to do it!? I turned to the butler for help, but he immediately looked away.
Where did that courage to talk back to the Duke go, huh!?
