When My Contract with the Misanthropic Duke Ended, I Filed For Divorce, But My Husband's Obsession and Doting Became Unbearable - Chapter 31
“Well, after thinking about a lot of things, Sharon’s engagement has been decided~.”
That was too sudden.
Without any explanation, I was suddenly called here, and before I even knew what was happening, my engagement had apparently been arranged.
Though, since technically we’re still not divorced, I’m guessing this is all just for show… Still, I have no idea what Reed is planning, calling everyone together like this—the King, the Crown Prince, the Duke, and even my older brother.
“Sharon… is getting engaged? Who is the other party…?”
“Ah—no need to glare like that. Relax. The partner is my brother—”
“That bastard Crown Prince—”
“Not him. It’s Duke Bandage. Also, I’m pretty sure I just heard something outrageous, but maybe it’s just my imagination~.”
“Must have been your imagination. A fine decision, truly.”
Reed definitely said that in a way to stir things up on purpose. And I definitely heard the Duke use a rather disrespectful title for the Crown Prince. His tone was so low and dangerous it sent chills down my spine—it’s impossible the Crown Prince didn’t notice.
Yet somehow, the Duke managed to brush it off as if nothing had happened. His mental fortitude is terrifying. Then again, maybe a Duke needs nerves of steel like that to survive in noble society.
“Wow, such a change of attitude. I guess I was partly at fault, so I’ll overlook that little bit of disrespect. Besides, my brother looks like he’s having fun.”
“To think I’d ever have a Duke turn killing intent on me. Quite a rare experience—rather entertaining, actually.”
Only royalty could speak like that. Who else could stay so calm—amused, even—while being glared at by someone radiating murderous intent? I guess when you’re born a royal and people are always out to get you, killing intent just becomes another part of life. Still, this is reckless. Either of them could be accused of treason for less. How do they stay so relaxed about it?
“I’m glad to hear you found it entertaining. I’ll also overlook the teasing, then. It is good news indeed, but why the sudden engagement? Even if some time has passed since that audience, I thought I’d have to wait at least a year for permission.”
The way he said that—mentioning how he was teased—made it sound like the Duke truly felt no guilt at all for his earlier outburst. Almost as if to say, You were the one in the wrong. Maybe it’s allowed since their positions are close in rank… but still.
So the Duke was prepared to wait an entire year, visiting me again and again until he earned approval?
Hearing that made my heart waver a little.
Lately, I can’t help but start believing that the Duke really is serious about me—that he truly intends to keep loving me.
Even though I know there’s no such thing as a guarantee that such devotion will last forever…
And even though I know someone like me could never compare to a man like him.
