- Chapter 4 - Oh no! This is really a big problem, isn't it?
Night fell, and the lights came on.
In the most luxurious mansion of District 13 in Jing’an City, extravagance still reigned. The entire estate was decorated lavishly, especially the front hall, which was incredibly opulent.
However, perhaps due to the presence of local politicians, the banquet hall did not display too many overtly “expensive” items, and the scene was not made too ostentatious. The atmosphere was steady and restrained.
But Yi Jing could tell at a glance what was truly valuable – such things couldn’t fool her.
She only needed to look at the placement of wines, desserts and utensils to make a pretty accurate guess.
However, Yi Jing’s mind was not on those things now. Her head was full of what had just happened – how could she have run away?!
Yi Jing returned to the front hall in a daze, her demeanor dejected. She absentmindedly glanced at the setup in the venue, then sat down dejectedly in a corner of the banquet hall.
Ahhhh, it’s so frustrating!!
She didn’t know what had come over her. She wasn’t usually one to get stage fright, and there was no reason for her to avoid that situation, but she had turned and run away! Run away!! That was someone she had finally managed to see. What was she running from?!
If she weren’t in public, Yi Jing would have wanted to pull her own hair out.
Was running away after being caught peeking something a normal person would do? Though she wasn’t really peeking – she had been looking quite openly! But why did she run away.
Would the other person think she was very strange?
Yi Jing wearily propped up her head.
“Jingjing?” Her aunt’s voice sounded beside her, saying with some puzzlement, “Where did you run off to just now, baby? Didn’t I tell you that today is your appointment banquet, and also the day you officially return to the Yi family? How can the banquet proceed if you’re not here?”
So that’s why I came back halfway.
Yi Jing had never felt she would be the true protagonist of the banquet, but if there was no “symbol” like her at the banquet, it probably couldn’t be successfully completed. Yi Jing raised her eyes to survey the banquet hall, then tilted her head towards her aunt and casually changed the subject: “I just went out for some fresh air. Has the banquet officially started yet, Auntie?”
“Of course not,” her aunt sat down relaxed beside Yi Jing. “Don’t worry, you haven’t arrived yet, and the old master hasn’t come either. The banquet won’t really start.”
Old master?
Yi Jing thought for a moment. When those two ladies were secretly discussing her earlier, they seemed to have mentioned the Yi family’s old master. Could that be the current head of the Yi family?
This feels a bit strange.
Before transmigrating into the book, Yi Jing had almost finished reading the original text, but even until the end of the novel, there were only a few brief mentions of the Yi family.
The Yi family was like a huge monster lurking in the shadows, and also like an inescapable mental shackle. Everyone who mentioned the “Yi family” would inexplicably fear and revere them, as if yielding to people labeled as “Yi family” was an iron law written in the underlying code of all characters.
But until the end, Yi Jing never figured out exactly what the Yi family did, nor did she know which system allowed the so-called “Yi family members” to act so recklessly.
No one had ever explained it clearly.
Even from the perspective of Yu Miao, which readers followed throughout, it was the same.
In the original work, almost all of the tragedies that befell Yu Miao stemmed from the Yi family. She had been entangled with many people associated with the Yi family and had been trapped in the Yi family several times, but Yu Miao also couldn’t explain clearly what was going on inside the Yi family.
But now was all of this about to be witnessed by herself?
Because of her identity, could she easily penetrate into the Yi family?
Yi Jing looked at the square stage that had been set up in the center of the banquet hall, suspecting that she and the Yi family’s old master would soon be giving speeches to the guests on that stage. But what should she say, Did the old master have any other purposes for holding this banquet this time?
No one had rehearsed lines with her either.
As Yi Jing was worrying in her heart, her aunt handed over a stack of paper documents she had been flipping through: “Oh right, Jing jing, take a look at this first. I’ll send you the other detailed materials later, just take a quick look at this for now. The city elections in Jing’an are coming up, and your first assignment after taking office will be in District 13. You don’t need to rush to the city center to report for duty for now, just stay with the Yi family.”
Stay with the Yi family?
Yi Jing’s eyes lit up.
That suits her perfectly!
After all, Yu Miao seems to be with the Yi family right now.
The image of that breathtakingly beautiful woman she had just seen appeared again in Yi Jing’s mind. That faint smile lingered in her memory, refusing to fade away.
Yi Jing shyly pursed her lips, unable to help thinking: If I stay with the Yi family, I should have a chance to see her again, right?
She couldn’t be certain if that woman was really Yu Miao. But whether she was or not, Yi Jing was very drawn to that woman. She wondered what the other’s status was Um, would it be convenient for them to be together?
“Jingjing?” Her aunt’s voice sounded by her ear again, “What are you thinking about? Why aren’t you looking?”
“Oh, oh, oh!” Yi Jing hurriedly came back to her senses.
The contents of the document were very general, looking more like some learning materials issued by a work unit, systematically introducing the recent work directions and functions of several new work groups. Yi Jing scanned it and could see that this was just a framework, and the actual operations would probably depend on the specific personnel assignments.
Perhaps because there were many people with prying eyes at the banquet, her aunt wasn’t able to or couldn’t get the real documents to show her.
Sigh, it’s troublesome when you’re not familiar with anything.
Yi Jing turned the document over with some emotion, glancing at the embossed logo on the black leather pad holding the document. The golden pattern was identical to the pattern on the left chest of her uniform and the shape of the epaulettes on her shoulders.
Yi Jing was stunned for a moment. She had only intended to take a casual glance, but after realizing what that pattern actually was, she immediately flipped the folder over to look again.
It really was an official document from the judicial system!
Yi Jing was momentarily speechless, her expression shocked and complex. How could they just casually bring out the original copy of such a document?
Her aunt didn’t seem to hold any official position either.
Could it be the Yi family?
The Yi family’s control was truly terrifying.
“Recently, the entire central city has been busy dealing with the election matters. After you take office as the security officer, you’ll only be responsible for the work content of the previous security officer, temporarily ensuring the safety of the election.” Her aunt leaned over and flipped a couple pages of the document, finding one page and pointing to the second column of names in charge, saying, “Look, your name is on there too.”
Yi Jing was stunned, and indeed saw her own ID photo and information printed on that document. Her cold and sharp-looking self was sandwiched between a group of calm and gentle-looking veteran politicians, listed alongside several other colleagues from the judicial system.
“Actually, when we say ensure safety, no one would really try to interfere with the election,” her aunt looked very certain, saying in a relaxed tone, “Baby, you just need to complete your work step by step, don’t worry about the rest, nothing will go wrong.”
?
Really?
Yi Jing frowned as she looked at the work document, feeling that the meaning in her aunt’s words seemed to be more than just what she had expressed. Could it be that because District 13 was the Yi family’s territory, her aunt was confident that her work in District 13 wouldn’t have any problems?
The waters of the Yi family are truly unfathomably deep.
Yi Jing flipped through the documents in her hand and said: “I remember as a security officer, I also have the responsibility of handling major pending cases in the jurisdiction.”
Yi Jing quickly glanced at the job description in the document, taking a moment to peek at the information regarding her own position.
She was not familiar with the rules of this world, only remembering that the position of security officer had a very wide range of powers and was a position with real authority. She couldn’t immediately understand the specific contents, but just seeing “review and investigate major cases in the jurisdiction” made her roughly understand where the “real power” of her position lay.
As long as she had this kind of authority, she would be half a level higher than the law enforcement agencies in District 13!
The review unit is always closer to the upper levels of power than the case-handling units.
And “major cases”, these two words alone indicate wide-ranging implications. For her, a young person who had just graduated, to be immediately pushed to this position, the intention of nurturing and protecting her couldn’t be more obvious. But handling cases still carries risks after all.
Yi Jing had only said half of what she wanted to say, feeling somewhat eager to try in her heart, but her aunt immediately spoke up and killed Yi Jing’s fantasies: “There won’t be any major cases. At least not during the election period, and certainly no important cases.”
Yi Jing was stunned and turned to look at her aunt: “What?”
“Oh, you silly child,” her aunt also turned her head, looking at Yi Jing with eyes full of doting affection, “It’s the election period. If there were any ‘major cases’ at this time, how would the outgoing mayor write his resume?
So there won’t be any important cases. Everything has to wait until after the election, and even then there must be a reasonable reason to reopen cases.”
It’s so complicated.
Yi Jing lowered her eyelashes, unable to help considering the feasibility of her actions. Even if she couldn’t immediately reopen cases, could she investigate secretly? After all, she had this authority.
The tragedies that happened to Yu Miao in the original work were closely related to the unspeakable secrets and cases hidden by the Yi family. And it wasn’t just Yu Miao, there should be far more than just Yu Miao who were involved and oppressed by the Yi family.
Originally when Yi Jing was reading the book, she didn’t feel much about all this, until now when she was truly immersed in it.
As a person with normal moral values, Yi Jing vaguely felt an unprecedented mental pressure, always feeling that the seemingly flourishing Yi family hid unseen dangers beneath its splendor and prosperity, that everything she enjoyed around her was tainted with the resentful spirits of innocent people.
Maybe it’s not that exaggerated? In such a large family, there should be one or two good people, right?
Yi Jing pinched the bridge of her nose with a bit of a headache.
“What’s wrong, Jing jing? Do you find it difficult?” Her aunt leaned in close and asked in a low voice with concern, “What’s making you unhappy? Let auntie help you solve it.”
“Ah, no, it’s nothing.” Yi Jing suddenly came back to her senses and smiled at her aunt, “I was just thinking about trying it out. I’ve been looking forward to working with my colleagues in the judicial system.”
“Mm,” her aunt tilted her head and looked at her with eyes full of smiles, as if appraising her most satisfactory child, and said with a smile, “You’ve always been so full of enthusiasm.”
Yi Jing breathed a sigh of relief.
It seems her character setting is quite consistent.
For some reason, when Yi Jing looked at her cold expression in that ID photo, she would occasionally feel that the original owner of this body might have been an even more difficult person than herself.
So no matter what she did, it probably wouldn’t be out of character.
Yi Jing continued to discuss work content with her aunt.
As she was concentrating on reading the documents, the sound of laughter and conversation that had never stopped in the banquet hall suddenly quieted down.
The guests present seemed to have suddenly received a unified signal, and the sound of conversation gradually quieted down from far to near.
Yi Jing was startled and instinctively raised her head.
In the center of everyone’s gaze, a tall but white-haired, dignified old man strode to the center of the banquet hall.
Yi Jing glanced at the old man from afar. He was an old man with a cold and hard expression, indifferent and contemptuous eyes, and a very tough demeanor of someone in power. Behind him followed a middle-aged man whose status was unknown, looking somewhat arrogant but also seeming quite respected. Hmm, wonder what he does.
“Look, your grandfather and young uncle have arrived,” her aunt said timely in Yi Jing’s ear.
What, grandfather??!
Yi Jing’s pupils shook as she looked at the old man in the crowd with shock.
That’s my grandfather? No, that’s this character’s grandfather?
You’ve got to be kidding.
If she really was the true daughter of the Yi family, why was she raised by her aunt? Is there something unknown behind this?
Having read many true and false young miss novels, Yi Jing’s imagination ran wild, but her aunt clearly didn’t want to say more. Yi Jing considered for a moment, afraid that asking too much would expose her identity, so she had to hold back for now and not ask.
“Alright, now that the old master has arrived, it won’t be long before it’s your turn to make an appearance,” her aunt curved her eyes and looked at Yi Jing very gently, “After today, everyone will know that the Yi family has a child like you. Go on, let everyone see you.”
Along with her aunt’s words, a young man who looked like a butler, silent and reserved, quietly walked up to Yi Jing’s side, bowed to her very respectfully, then gestured with his arm towards the edge of the banquet hall, indicating for Yi Jing to follow him.
Yi Jing looked at the butler with some stomach pain, silently sighed in her heart, and got up to follow.
Although she didn’t feel there was anything good about being recognized as a member of the Yi family, her aunt, who had always doted on her in this identity, seemed to really want her to complete this.
Sigh, it’s difficult.
Yi Jing followed the butler, circling around the guests in the banquet hall and passing through an inconspicuous corridor into a small rest room outside the banquet hall. Inside the rest room, three or four maids were waiting, and when they saw Yi Jing enter, they quietly and gently surrounded her to adjust her uniform.
“Miss Yi, please wait here for now. After the chairman’s speech, I will bring you to the banquet hall,” the butler said with a slight bow.
“Alright.” Yi Jing nodded indifferently, naturally turning and slightly extending her arms, allowing the young servants to adjust her collar, cuffs and tassels.
Yi Jing was quite familiar with this process. It was probably that when the Yi family’s old master introduced her, she would make a stunning entrance and appear before everyone.
But thinking about what was about to happen made Yi Jing feel a bit dejected.
This is great, she was going to completely change from a bystander to an accomplice.
This really saves her life. Although her current identity was originally a member of the Yi family, and it was reasonable to be recognized, Yi Jing really didn’t want to join such an evil family that was suspected of operating in both legal and illegal spheres. She still wanted to fall in love!
In this situation, did she have any self-rescue measures?
Yi Jing looked down at the maid helping her adjust her collar, carefully recalling the content of the original work – there was nothing.
Yi Jing sadly discovered that it seemed the “Yi family” had not received any punishment until she transmigrated into the book, and still stood firmly in District 13 of Jing’an City.
Even more desperate.
Yi Jing closed her eyes a bit painfully, feeling that she was beyond saving.
The old and steady but still powerful voice of Old Master Yi came from the direction of the banquet hall, carrying a bit of magnificent echo. The well-dressed butler tilted his head to listen carefully to Old Master Yi’s speech, not knowing what signal he received, but during a slight pause in Old Master Yi’s tone, he turned back and very politely extended his arm, saying: “Miss Yi, please follow me.”
Most butlers of this kind have long been employed in the family and deeply trusted by the family head, so it’s not surprising that he could grasp the timing.
Yi Jing sighed lightly, brushed her sleeve one last time, and followed the butler’s steps into the banquet hall.
Old Master Yi was also waiting for her inside the banquet hall. When she appeared, the gazes in the center of the crowd fell on her one after another – the old master’s, the so-called “young uncle’s”, and those of assistants and bodyguards. Yi Jing saw that the always serious, cold and aloof Old Master Yi was looking at her from afar, his face revealing a hint of deep-hidden, hard-to-detect nostalgia and tenderness.
Yi Jing secretly observed Old Master Yi’s expression, surprised and shocked, but also feeling a bit uneasy in her heart.
How would she know if Old Master Yi’s current emotions were goodwill or not!
This feeling of not knowing the situation was really unsettling. Although the old man didn’t seem to have any ill intentions now, he looked like the type who would talk about missing the past while getting rid of someone.
Yi Jing didn’t really want to go up, but Old Master Yi’s speech was continuing, and he had already reached the part introducing her appearance. Yi Jing had no choice but to take a deep breath inconspicuously, preparing to walk to the center of the crowd.
— It’s okay, it’s okay, most people’s lives have one or two darkest moments, you just need to get through it. After getting through this wave and successfully infiltrating the Yi family, she’ll have plenty of opportunities to save herself and rescue Yu Miao!
Yi Jing made up her mind and walked towards Old Master Yi, whose words also timely led to her. A spotlight from somewhere in the banquet hall steadily shone on Yi Jing, and all the lights and gazes converged on Yi Jing as she walked forward steadily.
Yi Jing walked to a spot not far from the old master. Just as she was about to take a champagne glass from the hands of the old master’s assistant —
The heavy doors far from the center of the banquet hall suddenly opened.
The abrupt sound stole the spotlight, and the center of attention immediately shifted.
Yi Jing was a bit bewildered, and Old Master Yi also frowned with displeasure.
The next moment, a clamorous sound suddenly arose from the doorway. The screams from the crowd seemed to spread like a contagion all the way from the entrance to the center of the venue, rippling through the banquet hall like waves.
Yi Jing felt that this matter was really not right, so she secretly glanced at Old Master Yi’s expression and found that his face looked terrible.
Has something really gone wrong?
Yi Jing was a bit surprised, but within two seconds, the crowd parted like they had been frightened by a fierce beast, voluntarily clearing out an open space. Yi Jing inadvertently glanced over, and in that one look, she suddenly saw a bloody human form lying at the main entrance of the banquet hall.
Yi Jing’s movements suddenly froze.
A person?
Is that a person?
Oh no! This is really a big problem, isn’t it.
