- Chapter 1 - The Last Second of Consciousness...
From some unknown point, Yu Jinzhao’s mind had become a chaotic fog, like the lingering haze of a hangover. Her mouth felt parched, her stomach churned, and every inch of her body throbbed with discomfort. Could this be the result of endless overtime and sleepless nights? Is my body finally breaking down?
She sensed she was lying on the floor, the icy chill of the tiles pressing against her back. She seemed to be wearing only thin clothes, as the coldness made her shiver uncontrollably. Her body felt weak and unresponsive, utterly beyond her control.
In her dazed state, a torrent of information flooded her brain, tormenting her and making it impossible to think clearly or grasp her current situation.
Throughout this ordeal, a voice—her own voice—repeatedly assaulted her already frayed nerves.
“Who do you think you are?! I’m your lawful Alpha, and you dare defy me? Do you have a death wish?!”
“Don’t forget who gave you everything you have. Since you married into the Yu Family, you’d better act like a proper Omega!”
“Damn it! You still dare resist me?!”
Though the voice was unmistakably her own, it sounded utterly foreign—filled with malice and arrogance, making Yu Jinzhao instinctively want to silence it.
What’s with this Alpha and Omega nonsense? What are they even talking about? Aren’t these terms from novels? How did they end up in my head? Her already muddled mind completely froze, the voice echoing relentlessly in her ears.
Yu Jinzhao shook her head violently, trying to shake the voice out of her mind.
But the voice clung to her like a maggot to bone, burrowing into her ears: You’re just an Omega, born to depend on us Alphas. I’m keeping you out of the public eye for your own good. What could the Yu Family possibly lack that you need?
Similar words continued to pierce her brain frame by frame, blurring the lines between past and present.
Despite the throbbing pain in her head, Yu Jinzhao couldn’t resist the urge to stand. Who is speaking? How could they utter such vile words? More importantly, the voice sounded eerily like her own.
What’s happening? Why would “I” say such things?!
Beyond the ringing in her head, a strange, indescribable soreness and tightness pulsed at the back of her neck—swollen and burning hot. The alternating chills in her body and the scalding heat at her nape drove Yu Jinzhao to the brink of madness.
Ignoring the unbearable throbbing pain in her neck and the utter weakness in her limbs, Yu Jinzhao swayed unsteadily, desperate to stand up and shut that mouth.
The next moment, she felt a dull, heavy blow to her head. It wasn’t particularly forceful, but her skull was already splitting with pain, and this final strike was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
With a thud, her already unsteady body collapsed, sinking to her knees. Her vision blurred into hazy halos, barely registering the figure standing before her—a woman, it seemed.
In the final second before losing consciousness, Yu Jinzhao thought she caught a faint, cold fragrance—a fleeting sweetness that pierced the chaos, yet vanished like a phantom, its wisps fading before she could fully grasp it.
With that last flicker of awareness extinguished, Yu Jinzhao finally succumbed to unconsciousness.
Pei Daowan’s expression remained icy, her eyes calm and detached as she gazed at the unconscious Yu Jinzhao. In her hand, she still held the thick-bottomed wine bottle. Though her strike had been forceful, Yu Jinzhao’s drugged body was too frail to be killed outright, even though Pei Daowan knew this “Yu Jinzhao” was no longer the original.
But what did it matter? Who cared whether she lived or died? The end result was the same for everyone—death. It was merely a matter of time. What difference did it make?
With this thought, she set down the wine bottle and pulled a slim cigarette from her bag. Instead of lighting it immediately, she idly played with it between her fingers.
This time, without the distractions of social drinking and self-numbing, she realized she wasn’t as addicted to nicotine as she thought. Yet, when deep in thought, she still unconsciously reached for a cigarette.
Suddenly, she spoke into the empty air, “You said the original Yu Jinzhao is dead. What exactly does ‘she’s not Yu Jinzhao’ mean?”
“Host, I’ve explained this countless times. You refuse to believe me. What else can I do?”
“How did Yu Jinzhao die?”
“You broke her legs with your own hands and sent her to prison. How could you forget?”
The System was truly at its wit’s end, on the verge of tears. No matter how it explained or what it did, the Host never believed a word. Even after being reborn, she still distrusted it. Though it was just a machine, the System was about to short-circuit from frustration. It had never encountered such a difficult Host before.
Of course she couldn’t forget. She would never forget Yu Jinzhao’s face in this lifetime. In fact, she had sensed the moment this Yu Jinzhao took over the body.
The pheromones were different. The previous Yu Jinzhao’s pheromones had been the scent she loathed most—indescribable, yet as nauseating as the stench of rotting corpses in her eyes.
But this Yu Jinzhao was different. In that instant, the corpse-like stench that had haunted her nightmares for years vanished, replaced by a refreshing mint scent, tinged with citrus. Though faint, it brought a hint of cool clarity to the corpse-reeking room.
That was why Pei Daowan had let her struggle on the floor for so long without striking. Only when the entire room was filled with the crisp fragrance of citrus and mint, and Yu Jinzhao began to slowly rise, did she suddenly swing the wine bottle at her.
Pei Daowan raised an eyebrow, recalling what the System had said earlier: this Yu Jinzhao wasn’t the same person as before, but someone from another world, and someone who was here to help her.
At this thought, Pei Daowan couldn’t hide the mockery and skepticism in her eyes, her voice dripping with blatant disbelief.
“Oh~ So you’re saying she came all the way from another world… just to help me?”
She bit down hard on the words “help me,” her tone dripping with mockery and disdain that anyone could hear.
The System felt utterly helpless, as if its pleas reached neither heaven nor earth. Despite countless explanations and overwhelming evidence, Pei Daowan had knocked Yu Jinzhao unconscious without giving her a chance to speak.
The System genuinely suspected that if Yu Jinzhao hadn’t retained her Alpha status within the Yu Family, Pei Daowan would have chopped her into pieces and fed her to the sharks.
After all, the Host harbored an intense hatred for Yu Jinzhao. In her previous life, she had tortured Yu Jinzhao into crippling disability and imprisoned her.
Though Pei Daowan continued speaking to the System, her peripheral vision never left Yu Jinzhao.
In truth, she already believed most of what the System had said. But the sheer disgust she felt at seeing Yu Jinzhao’s face made her stomach churn with revulsion. She was currently restraining herself from destroying that face.
As for this Yu Jinzhao from another world—well, you can only blame yourself for having the exact same face as the original.
The System practically begged Pei Daowan, tears streaming down its virtual face. “Host, you absolutely can’t act rashly right now! The Yu Family’s power is unimaginable. If Yu Jinzhao dies, we’ll all be buried with her!”
Pei Daowan scoffed, momentarily forgetting that “Yu Jinzhao” had a “good father,” which allowed her to act so recklessly.
“You’re just a soulless system. Why are you afraid of death?”
Pei Daowan finally shifted her gaze from Yu Jinzhao, leisurely fixing her eyes on a point in the void. There, only she could see a glowing orb—the System itself.
The System wept with relief. For over an hour, ever since “Yu Jinzhao” had drugged the Host only to have her plan backfire, and then the Yu Jinzhao from another world had taken over this body, Pei Daowan hadn’t even blinked. She had simply watched Yu Jinzhao lie dazed on the floor, struggling desperately. Just as Yu Jinzhao was about to stand, Pei Daowan had swung a pre-prepared wine bottle with lethal force, clearly aiming to kill.
Watching this, the System had been genuinely terrified. This wasn’t mere hatred; it was a bone-deep, obsessive fixation.
“Host, you’re actually the Chosen One of this world. If you die, everything will collapse. Everyone revolves around you…”
The System’s voice trailed off, until it barely dared to look at her. Even so, it didn’t dare finish its sentence. The Host’s gaze was simply too oppressive. If the System had a physical form, it had no doubt she would pick up the wine bottle again and smash its head with the thick bottom.
“Revolve around me? How utterly ridiculous!”
Pei Daowan’s tone was calm, betraying no particular emotion. But the System had witnessed her actions in her previous life—she had spared not a single person connected to her.
Financial ruin and public disgrace were mere child’s play. Each of her victims suffered worse fates, nearly all ending up in prison. The entire generation of the Yu Family had been wiped out.
“Host, you can’t act rashly now. After all, that old fox Yu Xincheng still treasures his Alpha. We need to be patient. Besides, this Yu Jinzhao is completely different from the previous one. I swear, she’s been specially selected—a truly good person in every sense of the word.”
“An absolutely good person? I’ll see just how far her ‘goodness’ goes.”
Under the Yu Family’s corrupting influence, calling their members animals would be an insult to actual animals.
“Now, wake her up!”
Pei Daowan declared her decision regarding Yu Jinzhao without hesitation.
The System froze. What do you mean, “wake her up”? You want me to wake her up? How am I supposed to do that?!
I’m just a System!
Pei Daowan gazed down at Yu Jinzhao and the System, her eyes utterly devoid of emotion.
The System felt a surge of panic. This is a sign she’s about to lose her temper! Ignoring all caution, it dove into Yu Jinzhao’s consciousness.
“Yu Jinzhao! Yu Jinzhao! Wake up! Something’s wrong!”
