- Chapter 11 - The Reflection in the Pupils Becomes Increasingly Clear...
The reflection in her pupils grew clearer…
Pei Daowan drove with unwavering focus, her shoulders held ramrod straight, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. The car moved with smooth, steady precision, free from sudden brakes or reckless acceleration, mirroring her own composed demeanor—as if she were always calm and collected.
Yu Jinzhao, however, was far from the effortless composure she projected. In truth, she was easily agitated. Her outward stability and maturity were merely a temporary suppression of her restless nature, the result of past experiences.
Pei Daowan was different. Yu Jinzhao could sense a genuine steadiness and grace about her, a quiet elegance that drew the eye.
There was also something Yu Jinzhao found difficult to admit: she had always been drawn to women, and Pei Daowan’s type was precisely what she found attractive.
Outwardly cool and gentle, with an air of intellectual sophistication, Pei Daowan possessed an inner strength and resilience, refusing to compromise her principles easily.
Unable to resist, Yu Jinzhao relaxed her body and sighed softly, “This is nice.”
Thank goodness my mission target is someone I’m attracted to, not a man or someone else, she thought. Otherwise, I’m not sure I could have accepted this.
“What’s so great?” Pei Daowan asked, perhaps to break the subtle tension between them.
Yu Jinzhao, feeling a little guilty, touched her nose. “Thank you for bringing me out for barbecue.”
Pei Daowan had wanted to say, “Even if I hadn’t brought you, you could have come yourself.” But the words caught in her throat. Instead, she accepted the gratitude. “You don’t need to thank me. It’s only right. You shielded me several times tonight.”
This wasn’t an empty compliment. Anyone could see the true purpose of tonight’s banquet, especially since Yu Jinzhao had brought Pei Daowan along.
Unable to gain any advantage from Yu Jinzhao, the others would have easily targeted Pei Daowan, an Omega, with their words.
But none of that happened. Yu Jinzhao didn’t allow a single insulting or prejudiced remark to land on her. Like a lion guarding its territory, she defended her fiercely. Pei Daowan hadn’t faced a single attack all night.
In truth, Pei Daowan was used to it. Throughout her career, she had faced countless doubts and criticisms. As an Omega who had risen to a position “unbefitting” her status in the eyes of many Alphas, she had become a target for their arrogance and resentment.
The attacks against her were truly inconsequential. She could even pinpoint the flaws in their logic and retaliate with sharper, more incisive words.
Yu Jinzhao, however, genuinely surprised her. She was slightly kinder than Pei Daowan had imagined, or perhaps she was simply adapting to her role more quickly.
Both logically and emotionally, Pei Daowan felt she should help Yu Jinzhao. Especially with such a small gesture as taking her out for barbecue—why not?
The car soon pulled away from the Yu Family’s old mansion. Pei Daowan deliberately drove along a riverside road, letting the evening breeze drift through the open windows, cooling Yu Jinzhao’s flushed cheeks.
Perhaps the riverside breeze evoked a familiar feeling in Yu Jinzhao, gradually merging with her memories of the riverbank near her university.
Yu Jinzhao unconsciously relaxed, her fingers tapping out a rhythm. A melody from her past surfaced in her mind, and she couldn’t help but hum along.
“Though a thousand songs may drift on distant roads tomorrow, and a thousand stars may shine brighter than tonight’s moon, none can compare to this evening’s beauty, nor could anything ever make me appreciate it more, because you’re singing with me tonight…”
Yu Jinzhao’s humming was barely audible, just enough to cut through the wind and reach Pei Daowan’s ears as an unfamiliar melody. She couldn’t quite make out the words.
Still, it sounded rather pleasant…
Influenced by Yu Jinzhao’s mood, Pei Daowan unconsciously pursed her lips slightly, her gaze softening.
Turning a corner, the car entered a narrow alley and stopped in front of an unassuming little restaurant.
Yu Jinzhao instinctively surveyed the place. It was clean enough, but its age was evident.
A fleeting sense of disappointment flashed through Yu Jinzhao’s mind. Not because of the restaurant itself, but because she regretted not being able to enjoy barbecue by the river.
In her view, savoring grilled food by the riverbank, with the evening breeze and the river view, was one of life’s greatest pleasures. Moving the activity indoors significantly diminished the enjoyment.
Though slightly disappointed, Yu Jinzhao didn’t show it. She remained cheerful, thrilled that Pei Daowan had actually brought her out for barbecue. Could this be a major breakthrough in their relationship?
Pei Daowan, clearly familiar with the place, greeted the owner before heading upstairs, Yu Jinzhao following closely behind.
As Yu Jinzhao ascended the stairs, the scene before her far exceeded her expectations. Instead of a closed-off space, she found herself on an expansive rooftop terrace.
The aroma of grilling meat, carried on the evening breeze, washed away the faint disappointment lingering in her heart. The view from above was far more expansive than she had imagined.
She couldn’t resist circling the terrace twice. Being so close to the riverbank, Yu Jinzhao could clearly see the ripples of waves lapping against the shore. Up close, she could even detect the earthy scent that always clung to the riverbank.
Yu Jinzhao was genuinely delighted, her smile unreserved as it caught Pei Daowan’s eye.
She found herself drawn closer to Pei Daowan, her reflection growing clearer in the other woman’s pupils until they stood barely a foot apart.
This was an unusually intimate social distance, closer even than that between friends. Yu Jinzhao paused, her gaze fixed on Pei Daowan’s eyes.
Pei Daowan’s expression remained serene, her brows unfurrowed, as if utterly unconcerned that Yu Jinzhao had breached normal social boundaries, especially considering the other woman was an Alpha.
Yu Jinzhao continued to gaze into Pei Daowan’s eyes, her smile genuine and heartfelt. “Thank you,” she said.
Pei Daowan was the first to look away, casually handing the menu to Yu Jinzhao. “See what you’d like to eat.”
Having barely eaten dinner, Yu Jinzhao was genuinely hungry. She ordered a string of grilled skewers before smiling sheepishly. “Anything else you’d like?”
Pei Daowan shook her head gently. She had already eaten slightly more than usual tonight, and at the Yu Family’s old residence no less—a truly unexpected turn of events.
Yu Jinzhao didn’t press the matter, ordering all her favorite dishes.
“When I was in school, I loved this barbecue place near campus. Every summer, my friends and I would go there to eat skewers.”
Yu Jinzhao’s expression brightened, a hint of nostalgia in her eyes. She seemed completely unconcerned about letting slip that the “Yu Jinzhao” of the past would never have been caught eating street-side barbecue.
Pei Daowan played along perfectly. “Did you still go there after graduation?”
“We went often right after graduation, but then we got busy, and the visits became less frequent. We started seeing each other less too…”
Until one time, when they finally managed to carve out time for a reunion, hoping to relive their student days, only to find the place gone.
It was a husband-and-wife shop. As they grew older and their strength waned, they returned to their hometown and transferred the business to someone else.
Yu Jinzhao no longer remembered the taste of the original shop, but she sensed that the new owner’s cooking skills were subpar. The grilled dishes were unappetizing, and she never went back.
With the shop’s closure, her student days faded away as well. She gradually transitioned from a student to a working professional.
In her first year in the workforce, driven by ambition and a reluctance to work under others, she and a few like-minded friends ventured into entrepreneurship. Initially, things went smoothly, but later, cash flow problems arose, leaving her overwhelmed with stress.
Looking back, she realized that her half-month stay here had significantly eased her pressure—a kind of unconventional escape.
The thought made her chuckle softly. Life truly is unpredictable.
Though it was past midnight, the barbecue restaurant remained packed. While waiting for her order, Yu Jinzhao decided to take the stairs along the terrace to the riverbank.
The river flowed ceaselessly, its waves lapping against her heart. Yu Jinzhao gazed into the dark depths of the water and slowly exhaled a breath of stale air.
Those who abandon me, yesterday’s days cannot be held back.
Those who trouble my heart, today’s days bring only worry.
She needed to look forward. The urgent task at hand was to help the female lead fulfill her wishes. Only then would she have a chance to return.
Escaping was futile. She had to shoulder her responsibilities. Turning to face Pei Daowan, Yu Jinzhao’s gaze had grown much firmer.
By the time she returned, all the dishes had been served. Pei Daowan hadn’t moved an inch, still sitting in the same posture as when Yu Jinzhao had left.
Suddenly, a thought surged through Yu Jinzhao’s mind: Pei Daowan was waiting for me to come back. Despite knowing it was inappropriate, the idea took root and refused to be suppressed, causing the corners of Yu Jinzhao’s lips to curl upward slightly.
“Have you been waiting long?”
“Not long. They just finished serving.”
Pei Daowan’s expression remained calm, betraying no hint of ulterior motives. Her gentle attire and graceful demeanor tonight made Yu Jinzhao want to close the distance between them.
It wasn’t that Pei Daowan had been unkind before, but her previous sharpness had intimidated Yu Jinzhao, making her afraid to speak up or even approach.
Now that they were on the same side, Yu Jinzhao’s steps grew lighter, her eyes sparkling with youthful exuberance.
“I’m so happy tonight,” she said.
Pei Daowan raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised. Could simply treating her to barbecue make her this happy?!
She had only noticed Yu Jinzhao seemed a bit down after leaving the Yu Family. Though Yu Jinzhao hadn’t lost the upper hand, that didn’t mean the ordeal hadn’t drained her energy.
Moreover, thanks to Yu Jinzhao, Pei Daowan hadn’t felt any pressure at all. Out of both gratitude and reason, she felt she should express some appreciation.
It seemed Yu Jinzhao was even easier to break through than Pei Daowan had imagined. This made her Yu Family Alpha status all the more valuable to exploit.
With a faint smile, Pei Daowan said, “You were the hero today. Eat as much as you want.”
Yu Jinzhao sprawled lazily in the passenger seat, feeling rather gluttonous and utterly lacking in composure.
She occasionally glanced out the window, stealing furtive glances at Pei Daowan.
Tsk!
No wonder she’s the female lead of this novel. The creator truly favored her. Her skin was as fair as jade, radiating a soft, ethereal glow in the night.
Her slender, arched eyebrows resembled a crescent moon hanging in the sky, their gentle curve hinting at a subtle aloofness and cool detachment.
Yu Jinzhao couldn’t see Pei Daowan’s full face, daring only to steal glimpses of her profile. Below her straight nose were Pei Daowan’s slightly pursed lips, their graceful shape making Yu Jinzhao’s cheeks flush inexplicably.
She found herself daydreaming about what it would feel like to kiss those lips.
Slap!
A sharp slap rang out near Pei Daowan’s ear. Though the sound wasn’t loud, the two were alone in the car, and Yu Jinzhao knew instantly who had delivered it.
