Pei Daowan glanced at Yu Jinzhao in surprise, only to see her face flushed crimson, shaking her head nervously.
What’s going on?!
Feeling Pei Daowan’s gaze, Yu Jinzhao wished she could crawl into a crack in the ground. It was true that she liked women, but she had never considered such a question before. Why am I acting like a lunatic, staring at someone’s lips and wondering if they’d be good to kiss?!
“It’s nothing, nothing at all. I’m fine. Just keep driving. There was a mosquito.”
Pei Daowan sighed inwardly. The excuse was flimsy, but she didn’t press the matter.
“What was wrong with her just now?” she suddenly asked the System in her mind. The System went into full-blown panic mode. Oh no!
Why does the Host either ignore me completely, acting like I don’t exist, or suddenly hit me with such explosive questions?!
“Uh… Yu Jinzhao was thinking… she was thinking about how someone as beautiful as you would end up being with… someone else in the future…”
The System dared not reveal the truth. After painstakingly establishing Yu Jinzhao’s glorious and upright image, how could she be so pathetic, losing her composure over just a glimpse of Pei Daowan’s lips? How embarrassing!
Despite her internal complaints, Yu Jinzhao had chosen Pei Daowan herself, and she had to make it work, no matter how awkward.
Pei Daowan didn’t press the System’s words, letting out a soft, teasing laugh. “Mosquitoes already this early in the season?”
Damn it! Yu Jinzhao could detect a hint of inexplicable fondness and indulgence in her tone.
Aaaah!
What am I even thinking? Have I been away from women for too long? How did I become like this?!
Giving up on explaining, she buried her face in her hands, mumbling, “Drive carefully. Watch the road.”
“I always drive carefully. But you—did you get the mosquito?”
Pei Daowan had initially intended to let Yu Jinzhao off the hook, but seeing her transform into an ostrich-like figure was too amusing and endearing to resist. She couldn’t help but tease her a little.
“Got it, got it! A huge mosquito, too. Don’t worry, if it bit me, it won’t bite you.”
“That’s for the best.”
For the rest of the journey, Yu Jinzhao didn’t dare look at Pei Daowan, instead burying herself in her seat and playing ostrich the entire way.
Normally, Pei Daowan would leave early and return late, sometimes not coming home at all. So whenever she did return, Yu Jinzhao would always greet her warmly.
But this time, the moment they reached the front door, Yu Jinzhao bolted to her bedroom like she was fleeing for her life, even forgetting to take off her shoes.
Immediately afterward, Pei Daowan heard the sound of water splashing against skin. It wasn’t her fault for eavesdropping; Yu Jinzhao’s voice was so loud that Pei Daowan could hear everything clearly from downstairs.
She’s actually kind of cute!
This kid… I never imagined she’d be so easily flustered!
Looking up, Yu Jinzhao saw her reflection in the mirror: her face was flushed crimson, her embarrassment and shyness impossible to conceal.
She couldn’t help but secretly despise her own lack of composure. What’s wrong with me? Why am I acting like this for no reason?
It’s true I like women, but I’ve never reacted this strongly before. A sudden thought flashed through her mind, startling her.
Could I… actually like Pei Daowan?!
As Yu Jinzhao considered this, she gradually calmed down. Setting aside how long she had known Pei Daowan and how superficial her feelings might be, she realized she didn’t even know if Pei Daowan was attracted to men or women.
Deep down, she remained deeply uneasy, overwhelmed by the uncertainty of the future. She had placed so much of her hopes and emotions on Pei Daowan that every action of the other woman stirred her soul.
Yes, that must be it, she thought. How else could I explain my behavior?
With a sigh, Yu Jinzhao resolved that she couldn’t continue like this. While completing Pei Daowan’s wishes remained her only hope of returning home, she was an independent person and couldn’t let herself be led around by the nose.
Over the years, she had seen it all. Though she hadn’t weathered many great storms, as an adult, she should have the emotional control to handle this. How else could she ever hope to return home?
As these thoughts settled, the heat gradually faded from Yu Jinzhao’s face, and her mind cleared.
Now, what she needed to do was earn Pei Daowan’s trust step by step, then persuade her to use Yu Jinzhao’s status as an Alpha of the Yu Family to achieve her goals. Once Pei Daowan’s wishes were fulfilled, Yu Jinzhao would finally be able to return home.
The next morning, when Yu Jinzhao came downstairs, the new butler had already prepared breakfast. Pei Daowan sat at the dining table, her nonchalant demeanor radiating composure, as if she were waiting for someone to join her.
At this thought, Yu Jinzhao’s heart skipped a beat. The suppressed feelings from the previous night seemed to be stirring again.
Damn it!
Where’s my self-control?
Did the dog eat it?
Pei Daowan glanced at her and said calmly, “I’ve been waiting for you for ages. Why are you standing there? Come eat.”
Something seemed to surge within Yu Jinzhao, overwhelming her restraint. The tips of her ears slowly flushed crimson.
The mental defenses she had painstakingly built up the previous night were completely forgotten.
“Coming right now,” she replied, her voice barely a whisper.
Almost in tiny, hurried steps, Yu Jinzhao moved the instant Pei Daowan finished speaking. Her body reacted more honestly than her mind.
By the time Yu Jinzhao regained her senses, she was already seated at the table, positioned perfectly to Pei Daowan’s side. The distance allowed her to clearly observe Pei Daowan’s facial expressions without being too close.
Compared to Yu Jinzhao’s whirlwind of thoughts, Pei Daowan remained remarkably calm. “We’re heading to the company soon. Do you have any plans?”
The question seemed abrupt and out of context, reminiscent of parents asking their children the day before school started, “Tomorrow’s the first day of the new semester. What are your plans for the term?”
After a moment’s hesitation, Yu Jinzhao decided to answer truthfully. After all, she and Pei Daowan were now on the same side, and she needed to earn Pei Daowan’s trust.
“I want to familiarize myself with the company’s operational processes first, then cultivate my own team.”
“Which department are you planning to start with?”
“That’s what I’m struggling with right now. I’m considering the marketing department or management, but I’m not sure which would be better.”
“Explain your reasoning.”
“For years, the Yu Family has focused on traditional industries. But since the reforms began, emerging sectors have been rapidly developing. While the Yu Family remains large and influential, we can’t afford to underestimate the growth of these new industries.”
“I want to carve out a new path for the Yu Family.”
“If you’re aiming to carve out a new path, why rely on the Yu Family? Why not strike out completely independently?”
When Pei Daowan asked this question, she shed her earlier gentle demeanor, her expression sharpening.
Yu Jinzhao felt no pressure, only a touch of embarrassment, making it difficult to speak. “Because I don’t know anyone and have no startup capital. Relying on the Yu Family is my only option.”
Hearing this, Pei Daowan burst into laughter. Yu Jinzhao’s honesty was almost endearing.
The sound of Pei Daowan’s laughter made Yu Jinzhao’s blush deepen. She knew there was no mockery in the sound, but it still made her heart race, as if she were being underestimated.
“Relying on the Yu Family is the best choice because…”
“Mm, I understand. If I were you, I’d do the same. I believe in you,” Pei Daowan interrupted firmly, cutting off Yu Jinzhao’s remaining words for the first time.
Yu Jinzhao took a deep breath. “What I said before still stands. If you ever feel this marriage has outlived its purpose, you can file for divorce at any time. In the meantime, you’re free to pursue whatever you wish. You’re free, and I’ll do my best to help you achieve your goals.”
This time, Pei Daowan didn’t sneer as she had when she first heard these words. Instead, she propped her cheek against her hand, tilted her head, and gazed at Yu Jinzhao.
“Why are you doing this? Why are you helping me?”
“Because… because I was such a bastard before. But don’t worry, I won’t let anything like that happen again.”
Yu Jinzhao didn’t specify the incidents, but both women knew exactly what she meant: the forced marriage, the deprivation of personal freedom, the drugging…
After Yu Jinzhao spoke, an awkward silence hung in the air, neither daring to break it.
Finally, Pei Daowan spoke first: “Is this your way of making amends?”
“No!” Yu Jinzhao’s response was firm and unwavering, without a trace of hesitation.
“It’s not about amends. This is what I should have done all along. Harm is harm—nothing can erase the pain you’ve suffered. I have my own motives too, so this isn’t about compensation; it’s about mutual benefit.”
“And what do you want to gain from this?”
“You’ve seen it yourself. Even though I’m the Yu Family’s only Alpha, I have to obey Yu Xincheng’s every command. I want to break free from the Yu Family.”
Yu Jinzhao didn’t reveal that she had transmigrated into a book, nor would she ever claim she was here to “save” Pei Daowan from her arrogance and ignorance.
Not only would Pei Daowan never believe such words, but even Yu Jinzhao herself felt like she was living in a dream.
However, she hadn’t lied to Pei Daowan. It truly was a win-win situation: Pei Daowan sought revenge, and Yu Jinzhao wanted to return home. They shared a common goal.
“Yu Jinzhao!” Pei Daowan suddenly called out.
Yu Jinzhao followed her gaze upward, and their eyes met. Neither woman looked away.
“This is the first time I’ve trusted you. I hope it won’t be the last.”
“It won’t be. Trust me.”
Pei Daowan abruptly stood, her gaze piercing Yu Jinzhao with the commanding scrutiny of a superior. It was the haughty appraisal of someone accustomed to power.
Yu Jinzhao felt completely exposed under that gaze, as if she were being dissected. Though uncomfortable, she didn’t flinch.
Meeting Pei Daowan’s eyes, she saw a profound darkness within them, like bottomless black holes threatening to swallow her whole. She couldn’t help but tremble.
This was the feeling of being watched by a hunter. Yu Jinzhao would never forget it. Back when she had just graduated and was fresh out of school, many people, seeing her youth, had underestimated and dismissed her.
Among them was a prominent figure in her industry who had scrutinized her with that same gaze. The sensation was like having her throat gripped, suffocating yet inescapable.
Suddenly, all the oppressive pressure vanished. Pei Daowan reverted to her usual gentle, water-like demeanor, as if nothing had just occurred.
“The food’s getting cold. Let’s eat.”
Yu Jinzhao sat down mechanically, feeling cold sweat break out on her back.
In recent days, whether due to delusion or vanity, all the ambiguous feelings she had harbored had shattered. How could she have forgotten who the person before her truly was?
The warmth and kindness were merely a facade. This was the woman who had annihilated the entire Yu Family. Though nothing had happened yet, that didn’t mean it wouldn’t in the future.
After all, one couldn’t become the female lead of a novel without possessing some formidable skills.
Yu Jinzhao shook her head, banishing the inappropriate thoughts from her mind.
She had to admit, Pei Daowan couldn’t be much older than thirty—perhaps twenty-seven or twenty-eight?
Only two or three years older than me, yet she already possesses such a formidable aura. It seems my cultivation still has a long way to go.
Neither Pei Daowan nor the System could fathom Yu Jinzhao’s thoughts. If they had, the System would have sighed inwardly: The woman sitting before you has already lived through one lifetime. It’s only natural that your cultivation falls short.
Pei Daowan had deliberately given Yu Jinzhao a harsh welcome. Having decided to trust her, she couldn’t afford to project an image of being easily manipulated. Anyone who betrayed her would face dire consequences.
Still, Yu Jinzhao’s performance was commendable. She wasn’t as flustered as Pei Daowan had anticipated. Though still somewhat nervous, she maintained a dignified composure, meeting Pei Daowan’s gaze without subservience. That was quite impressive.
