- Chapter 14 - If All This Belongs to Pei Daowan..
Yu Jinzhao had no idea what was happening next door. After showering, she lay down on her bed.
Though her body was exhausted, her mind remained unusually active, with no hint of sleepiness.
Images flashed through her mind: her first award certificate as a child, her mothers taking her out to play, her carefree days with friends…
Frame by frame, scene by scene, they flickered through her mind like silent films, all eventually dissolving into the scene she had witnessed upon waking that night.
She had never encountered someone like Pei Daowan before—fragile yet with hidden sharpness, possessing a cool, aloof appearance that radiated an indescribable allure.
Even her nose seemed to recall the cold fragrance she had smelled that day. Sadly, it had only been once; she had never caught that scent again.
“Yu Jinzhao!”
A voice suddenly called her name. Yu Jinzhao startled, then realized it was the System, which hadn’t appeared in ages.
An inexplicable irritation welled up within her. Why show up now, after all this time? What’s the point?
“What do you want?” she snapped.
The System stammered, “Um, what do you think of the female lead?”
After a long pause, Yu Jinzhao finally replied, “Beautiful and sharp.”
“What?! That’s it? Just ‘pretty’? No other adjectives?”
“Um, you know how Alphas and Omegas are naturally drawn to each other in this world?”
Yu Jinzhao nodded. She’d learned this basic knowledge within days of transmigrating.
“You’re an Alpha, and the female lead is an Omega. Do you have any… other feelings for her?”
The question was so presumptuous that Yu Jinzhao’s expression immediately turned cold. What do you mean, “other feelings”?
Yes, she’d transmigrated as an Alpha, and yes, she liked women. But that didn’t mean she’d fall for just anyone, especially when the question came from the System.
“What exactly are you getting at? Do you want me to like the female lead, or do you want me to stay indifferent?”
The System had expected Yu Jinzhao to either blushingly deny any feelings or awkwardly admit them. Instead, she reacted in the complete opposite way.
It froze, its data analysis completely failing. It had specifically chosen Yu Jinzhao for two reasons: first, because she was a good person, and second, because its analysis predicted she would gradually fall in love with the female lead, sacrifice everything for her, and successfully help her exact revenge.
But now Yu Jinzhao seemed utterly indifferent. Where had the System gone wrong?
“What I mean is, the female lead is so beautiful and has such a great personality. Don’t you feel any attraction to her?”
Yu Jinzhao’s expression remained frank. “She’s undeniably beautiful. Anyone would be drawn to her, and I’m no exception. But what does that matter? Why don’t you just tell me the real reason you’ve appeared this time?”
Her words left the System speechless.
Yu Jinzhao had finally figured it out: this System was utterly useless. It was never around when she needed it, yet it always popped up at the most inconvenient times, just to poke and prod her. How annoying!
“Uh, it’s nothing really,” the System stammered. “I just wanted to remind you not to forget that you can only return home by helping the female lead successfully avenge herself.”
“I don’t need your reminders. I know. You can leave now.”
Defeated, the System desperately tried to salvage the situation. “Don’t you have any other questions for me? Especially about the female lead?”
Yu Jinzhao’s expression finally softened, losing its earlier icy edge.
“Then tell me, was there more to the car accident over twenty years ago than meets the eye?”
Bang!
The System froze, terrified to speak. Without Pei Daowan’s permission, it wouldn’t dare reveal such information. If it ever brought up this topic with Pei Daowan again, the System had no doubt she would crush it to death.
“Hah! Useless.”
At that moment, Yu Jinzhao’s expression mirrored Pei Daowan’s perfectly, radiating undisguised contempt and disdain.
“……”
Fine, she was useless. She admitted it.
Though she couldn’t see the System, her intuition told her it had already left.
She hadn’t asked that question casually. The System clearly knew something but refused to reveal it. It seemed this System had plenty of secrets of its own.
However, she was now fairly certain that the car accident from over twenty years ago was suspicious. If there were nothing to hide, the System would have explained it.
This System was truly intriguing. It would only discuss trivial matters, but when it came to Pei Daowan’s privacy or crucial events, it clammed up completely.
Was the System really here to help her?
Yu Jinzhao was a sharp woman. Whether in school or at work, she had always stood out from the crowd.
The System was hiding something!
So, should she trust its words? If it claimed it could send her back, would she really be able to return?
What if it was lying?
As these thoughts raced through her mind, Yu Jinzhao’s sense of urgency surged. She had been too passive, letting others lead her by the nose.
She needed to familiarize herself with this place as quickly as possible. As for the car accident from over twenty years ago, she would investigate it herself, without alerting anyone.
Lying in bed, Yu Jinzhao stared blankly at the faint moonlight streaming through the gap in the curtains. Her thoughts raced, her mind wide awake.
A breakthrough!
She needed a breakthrough—something to counter Yu Xincheng and Pei Daowan.
For Pei Daowan, Yu Jinzhao’s only value lay in her status as a member of the Yu Family. She must be after something Yu Jinzhao possessed.
As for Yu Xincheng, Yu Jinzhao was the Yu Family’s sole Alpha, making him a slightly easier target.
What does Pei Daowan want to gain through me?!
In a flash, a daring idea struck Yu Jinzhao.
Perhaps Pei Daowan doesn’t want a divorce at all. Maybe she’s just using me to get closer to Yu Xincheng?!
And if that’s true, the drugging and forced marriage were all part of her plan?!
The realization sent a cold sweat breaking out across Yu Jinzhao’s body. If this were true, Pei Daowan’s schemes ran far deeper than she had imagined.
Having no memories of the original owner, Yu Jinzhao couldn’t gauge the depth of the original owner’s feelings for Pei Daowan.
She could only piece together from others’ accounts that the original owner had indeed been deeply infatuated with Pei Daowan, having fallen in love at first sight during a banquet and subsequently launching a relentless pursuit.
Despite Pei Daowan’s repeated rejections, the original owner refused to give up, resorting to stalking, threats, and disrupting her private life, ultimately resorting to drugging her.
At this thought, Yu Jinzhao instinctively touched the back of her neck. Since her hospitalization, she’d occasionally felt a sharp, persistent pain there—not intense, but impossible to ignore.
I should get this checked out when I have time, she thought. And find out what drug the original owner used…
For days, Yu Jinzhao worked tirelessly, so busy she barely had time to eat, let alone investigate the car accident.
She was determined to quickly familiarize herself with the company environment and personnel, which required her to dedicate vast amounts of time and energy. Fortunately, her efforts were paying off.
When her colleagues saw her now, they no longer saw her as just a spoiled, rich second-generation heir.
Yu Jinzhao still felt a pang of regret. She had been so busy these past few days, leaving early and returning late, that she hadn’t seen Pei Daowan in nearly a week since that night.
She didn’t even know if Pei Daowan had gone back home.
With a soft sigh, Yu Jinzhao shut down her computer, tidied her desk, and gazed out the window.
The setting sun cast a vast orange glow across the glass. Yu Jinzhao squinted slightly against the fading light.
Suddenly, she felt an overwhelming urge to leave work early and see Pei Daowan!
Before long, Yu Jinzhao had packed her things and was ready to go. The thought of seeing Pei Daowan had become irresistible.
Staying at the office felt like torture; she desperately wanted to see Pei Daowan.
She didn’t delve into the reasons behind this urgency. As she drove past a flower shop, she stopped to pick out a bouquet, thinking it might help advance their relationship.
Racing against the sunset, Yu Jinzhao drove a little faster than usual, arriving home just as the last sliver of the sun dipped below the horizon.
