- Chapter 15 - I Know You're Not the Real Yu Jinzhao...
Ding!
The elevator doors opened, and Yu Jinzhao had already reached the company entrance. Ever since the thought of seeing Pei Daowan had surfaced, she couldn’t suppress it any longer.
Staying at the office felt like sitting on pins and needles; she desperately wanted to see Pei Daowan.
She didn’t delve into the reasons why. On her drive home, she made a special stop at a flower shop to pick out a bouquet of Rain Lilies.
She felt these flowers perfectly suited Pei Daowan—resilient, unwavering, and symbolizing hope reborn.
Racing against the setting sun, Yu Jinzhao drove slightly faster, arriving home just as the last sliver of sunlight dipped below the horizon.
Pei Daowan seemed to have returned early today as well. Instead of going inside, she was reading in the small pavilion in the courtyard.
As Yu Jinzhao entered, she saw the warm white light illuminating Pei Daowan’s face—serene and gentle. Though they were some distance apart, Yu Jinzhao could almost hear the soft rustle of pages turning.
Swish~
A page flipped, and Yu Jinzhao’s heart suddenly raced. Her mouth felt dry.
She felt the Rain Lilies in her hand were unworthy of Pei Daowan, who deserved flowers far more beautiful and radiant.
Pei Daowan sensed her presence and glanced up at Yu Jinzhao, her eyelashes fluttering slightly as she tilted her head.
A hint of inquiry flickered in Pei Daowan’s eyes, as if asking, “Why are you standing at the door instead of coming in?”
Feeling as if she were walking with the wrong foot forward, Yu Jinzhao stiffly approached, her steps rigid but unwavering.
She cleared her throat, trying to appear casual, even a little nonchalant.
“I saw the Rain Lilies blooming beautifully on my way back and bought some.”
With that, Yu Jinzhao offered the flowers with both hands. Afraid to meet Pei Daowan’s gaze, and being slightly taller, she focused her eyes on the flowerbed behind her.
Pei Daowan seemed to smile briefly, a fleeting, subtle expression that Yu Jinzhao couldn’t be sure she hadn’t imagined.
Pei Daowan accepted the Rain Lilies and brought them to her nose, inhaling their faint fragrance. The scent was so delicate that it might have been missed entirely, yet the flowers bloomed with vibrant intensity.
“Thank you. I love them.”
This time, Pei Daowan’s smile was unmistakable. Even though Yu Jinzhao deliberately avoided her gaze, she could see the smile gradually spreading from Pei Daowan’s phoenix-shaped eyes, layer by layer, until it overflowed.
It felt as if something were slowly flowing through Yu Jinzhao’s heart, leaving a lingering trace that she couldn’t quite grasp.
Perhaps the System was right. Maybe she really did like Pei Daowan, or perhaps it was love at first sight after all!
Yu Jinzhao smiled, her expression different from Pei Daowan’s gentle and serene smile. Yu Jinzhao’s smile was unrestrained, brimming with joy and contentment.
“Thank you for liking me. I’m so happy.”
Thump-thump-thump!
She heard her own heartbeat again, its rhythm drowning out the evening breeze. Standing before her was Pei Daowan.
“How wonderful…” Yu Jinzhao murmured involuntarily.
How wonderful! To see you the moment I return.
Pei Daowan didn’t ask what was so wonderful. Instead, she carefully cradled the flowers and turned to enter the house.
Yu Jinzhao instinctively followed her inside, watching as Pei Daowan found a beautiful vase and arranged the flowers stem by stem.
Yu Jinzhao remained silent, neither offering help nor moving closer. She simply watched her quietly.
For the first time, she truly understood the feeling of peaceful contentment.
“Beautiful, beautiful, truly beautiful!” Yu Jinzhao exclaimed again. For a moment, even Pei Daowan couldn’t tell if she was praising the flowers or herself.
“Host! Yu Jinzhao definitely thinks you’re beautiful! I’d bet my life on it!” the System declared.
Pei Daowan’s expression remained unchanged, but a flicker of annoyance stirred within her. This isn’t the time for such trivial distractions.
“From now on, if I don’t ask you, don’t speak.”
If the System had a face, it would have looked utterly crestfallen. It had been so eager to take credit, but Pei Daowan’s cold water doused its enthusiasm, silencing it instantly. It could only obediently shut its mouth.
“Yes, I also think it’s very beautiful.”
As Pei Daowan spoke, she didn’t look at the flowers but fixed her gaze unwaveringly on Yu Jinzhao.
Thump!
Yu Jinzhao could clearly feel her cheeks burning, the heat spreading upward from her neck.
She turned away awkwardly, echoing Pei Daowan’s words as if fleeing, her heartbeat drowning out all other sounds. Her mind was filled with nothing but the phrase: So beautiful!
Pei Daowan watched Yu Jinzhao’s bashful and innocent reaction with amusement. She found it both amusing and endearing—even more naive and easily manipulated than she had imagined.
It had to be said, Yu Jinzhao was undeniably beautiful. Despite having the exact same face Pei Daowan had once loathed and found nauseating, she now felt no discomfort looking at it. Instead, a flicker of delight even stirred within her.
Just now, she had carefully studied Yu Jinzhao’s features: sharp brow bones, a high-bridged nose, and deep-set eyes—a hint of mixed heritage.
Yet when Yu Jinzhao smiled, that sharpness softened dramatically, giving her an approachable, big-sister-next-door aura.
She’s quite attractive! Pei Daowan couldn’t help but think to herself.
She wasn’t one to judge people by their looks, and being naturally beautiful herself, she often found it difficult to discern beauty in others. But looking at Yu Jinzhao now, she had to admit the woman was genuinely attractive.
Noticing Yu Jinzhao’s obvious embarrassment, Pei Daowan abandoned her teasing demeanor.
“Have you eaten yet?” she asked, her voice softening with a tenderness and a hint of indulgence she hadn’t even realized she possessed.
Yu Jinzhao finally composed herself, turning back with feigned composure. “Not yet. I came straight home after work.”
“Perfect. I haven’t eaten either. Let’s go out. There’s a Japanese place downstairs that’s pretty good.”
Yu Jinzhao had no reason to refuse—nor did she want to. She readily agreed.
Since the restaurant was nearby, they strolled leisurely downstairs without taking the car.
Pei Daowan had returned home earlier and already changed into comfortable loungewear: an apricot-white linen dress paired with a simple knitted cardigan.
Yu Jinzhao had seen this outfit countless times on others, but it had never struck her as particularly special.
But when Pei Daowan wore it, Yu Jinzhao found it exceptionally beautiful.
She had seen Pei Daowan in formal attire before—sharp, elegant, and slightly intimidating, commanding respect.
Now, having changed out of her suit into casual home wear, Pei Daowan exuded an entirely different aura.
Contrast!
The thought struck Yu Jinzhao, and her mind began to wander, her heart filling with a strange new emotion.
No one else had seen Pei Daowan like this. They only saw the tip of the iceberg, while Yu Jinzhao had glimpsed her other side.
Most importantly, Pei Daowan had taken her to dinner—twice!
Who else could claim such treatment?
Given how much Pei Daowan disliked the original owner of Yu Jinzhao’s body, she would never have shared a meal with her, let alone enjoyed such harmonious moments. Could it be because of Yu Jinzhao herself?
At this thought, Yu Jinzhao abruptly stopped herself.
No, no, I can’t let my mind wander further. I can’t forget my purpose.
Lust truly clouds the mind!
Lost in thought during the journey, Yu Jinzhao’s attention wasn’t fully focused on Pei Daowan, and she failed to notice Pei Daowan’s subtle, constant observation of her.
Pei Daowan clearly saw Yu Jinzhao’s lips curve into a slight smile, her eyes sparkling with barely suppressed excitement, only to see her brow furrow moments later, her expression conflicted.
What could she be thinking about?
Why is she so conflicted?
As they crossed the street, Pei Daowan finally couldn’t hold back any longer. Yu Jinzhao looked utterly lost in thought.
She gently took Yu Jinzhao’s arm, guiding her toward the crosswalk.
Her voice, neither harsh nor soft, carried a hint of warning: “Snap out of it. Watch where you’re going.”
The moment Pei Daowan’s hand touched Yu Jinzhao’s shoulder, Yu Jinzhao froze instantly before mechanically following Pei Daowan’s steps onto the crosswalk.
She touched my shoulder!
She just touched me!
Just now, she touched my shoulder!
Yu Jinzhao’s mind replayed the brief moment endlessly. Though it had lasted only a few seconds, and the touch was through layers of clothing—she hadn’t even felt Pei Daowan’s warmth—the sensation had already faded.
Yet her left shoulder now felt heavy, urging her to move, but she remained frozen in place, maintaining her stiff posture as they crossed the street. It wasn’t until they stood before the Japanese restaurant that she finally snapped back to reality.
What’s wrong with me?
I’ve been so distracted all night, as if my soul has been stolen by something.
“A friend told me this Japanese restaurant is quite good. The owner is Japanese and has lived here for over thirty years.”
Friend?
This was the first time Yu Jinzhao had ever heard Pei Daowan mention a friend.
“Have you eaten yet?”
“Not yet. I’ve been too busy. My friend invited me several times, but I never had time to come. She’s been here alone a few times, though.”
Hearing this, Yu Jinzhao’s lips curved into a smile, though she tried to appear nonchalant. “Really? Then let’s try it out first.”
Pei Daowan chose a private room upstairs, separating them from the bustle and crowds below. The room was just for the two of them.
She naturally handed the menu to Yu Jinzhao. “Take a look first. What would you like to eat?”
Then, she pulled a slender cigarette from her purse. Before lighting it, she glanced up at Yu Jinzhao.
“You don’t mind, do you?”
Though framed as a question, Pei Daowan’s tone wasn’t particularly polite, almost as if she was certain Yu Jinzhao wouldn’t refuse. And indeed, Yu Jinzhao didn’t refuse.
She nodded slightly, signaling that it was okay to smoke.
Pei Daowan didn’t hesitate. A silver lighter appeared between her slender fingers.
Click!
A flame flickered to life, illuminating Yu Jinzhao’s heart. She couldn’t help but glance at Pei Daowan.
She recalled the night she had seen Pei Daowan smoking, a hazy, indescribable feeling washing over her.
The cigarette tip lit, releasing a faint, bitter aroma. Pei Daowan didn’t immediately take a drag. Instead, she deliberately shifted her position, ensuring the dispersing smoke avoided Yu Jinzhao, preventing her from inhaling too much.
“You don’t smoke!”
It was a statement, not a question.
Yu Jinzhao nodded slightly. She had never smoked before, and there was no reason to hide it.
She generally avoided smoking and drinking when out, occasionally sharing a small drink with friends.
“That’s good,” Pei Daowan murmured, a hint of a smile in her voice. She didn’t linger on the topic.
She brought the slender cigarette to her lips, and Yu Jinzhao watched as the tobacco slowly burned, turning from golden brown to ashy gray.
Pei Daowan didn’t inhale deeply, her expression betraying no enjoyment of the tobacco. It seemed more like a habit.
After just three puffs, Pei Daowan decisively extinguished the cigarette and rose to open a window for ventilation.
The air circulation system here was excellent. The faint tobacco scent lingering at the tip of Yu Jinzhao’s nose quickly vanished, replaced by the subtle aroma of incense.
The incense completely masked the faint tobacco smell. Had there been no physical evidence, no one would have known Pei Daowan had just smoked.
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist. I was thinking about something.”
This wasn’t a lie to Yu Jinzhao. Having lived through a previous life, Pei Daowan had long since quit smoking and no longer used it to numb her will.
However, the ingrained habit remained. It was difficult to shake off completely, and whenever she faced a major decision, she still found herself reaching for a cigarette to calm her nerves.
Yu Jinzhao didn’t press for details. She knew their relationship wasn’t close enough to casually inquire about Pei Daowan’s personal matters.
Though curious, she understood she had no right or reason to ask.
Yu Jinzhao smoothly changed the subject. “It’s fine. Let’s see what’s good to eat!”
She had only glanced at the menu earlier, which featured traditional Japanese dishes. More than deciding what she wanted, she was curious about Pei Daowan’s preferences.
“Alright.”
Pei Daowan didn’t hesitate. She picked up the menu and began checking off items, then handed it to Yu Jinzhao. Yu Jinzhao silently noted the marked dishes in her mind.
A subtle silence fell between them. Yu Jinzhao had so much she wanted to say but couldn’t find the words, so she kept her mouth tightly shut.
Pei Daowan, on the other hand, didn’t have much to say. She was debating whether to break the silence first, a rare moment of indecision for her. Thus, both women remained silent.
The arrival of the food jolted them out of their reverie.
Neither of them liked being served while eating, so the private room fell silent again, punctuated only by the occasional clink of utensils and soft chewing sounds.
After three rounds of dishes, both women were nearly full. Pei Daowan decided to speak up. Eager to put her plan into motion, she didn’t want to beat around the bush with Yu Jinzhao. She needed to test the waters.
“I know you’re not the real Yu Jinzhao!”
