- Chapter 2 - Her silk pajamas were slightly wrinkled, as if...
A voice kept calling her name, pulling her from the haze. Yu Jinzhao tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt heavy, as if she were paralyzed by a ghost, utterly helpless.
Yet the voice was relentless, buzzing incessantly in her ear, impossible to ignore.
“Speak! What is it?”
The System finally breathed a sigh of relief. Thank heavens, she’s awake! Otherwise, the Host might have actually killed it with her glare.
Regaining its composure, the System recalled the explanation the Host had given it earlier. Though it felt morally questionable, it had no choice. Its sole purpose was to serve the Host, so it reluctantly delivered the prepared words.
As Yu Jinzhao listened, her brows furrowed into a tight knot, her eyes filled with disbelief and incredulity.
“Wait, wait, let me process this. My head’s a mess right now.”
She clearly remembered working overtime until past 1 a.m., returning to her apartment, rushing through her nightly routine, and collapsing into bed. How could she be hearing all this? Was she just under too much stress, having a nightmare?!
After a long silence, Yu Jinzhao began to accept the reality of being transmigrated into a novel. But why her?!
She didn’t even read novels—how could she have transmigrated into one?!
Was it really just because she shared a name with the villainess?!
This was utterly absurd!
The System, feeling a little guilty, didn’t rush Yu Jinzhao as she regained her senses.
It hadn’t lied to its Host. By all accounts, Yu Jinzhao was a good person.
She had a loving family with two open-minded mothers, close friends, a fulfilling career, and a decent character. In every respect, she was someone trustworthy—which was precisely why the System had chosen her.
It was truly unfair to her, but no matter. Once the mission was complete, it would send her back and compensate her handsomely.
“What will happen to my family, friends, and work?”
The System hadn’t expected Yu Jinzhao’s first question upon waking to be about this. It felt even more gratified now.
Good, good, good! It knew it hadn’t misjudged her. Yu Jinzhao was indeed a good person.
“You don’t need to worry about that. Although you’ve come here, everything in your original world will remain unchanged. There are protocols in place to prevent anyone from noticing your absence. Moreover, you’ll receive appropriate compensation upon your return.”
“Compensation?”
Yu Jinzhao couldn’t help but let out a mocking laugh. They had dragged her here for no apparent reason, promising compensation after the task was completed. What kind of compensation was this? As if she cared about it.
The System, assuming Yu Jinzhao was tempted by the compensation, grew even more convinced that she was a truly good person. Compared to their Host, she was far easier to deal with.
“Yes, yes, our compensation will be extremely generous, enough for you to…”
Yu Jinzhao impatiently cut the System off. “Just tell me what I need to do.”
Since I’m here, I might as well make the best of it.
This was a complete disaster out of nowhere. She didn’t care about any compensation. She had family, friends, and a thriving career in her own world, and her career was at a critical juncture. She really didn’t want to waste any time.
But according to the System, if she failed to complete her assigned task, she wouldn’t be able to return. So she had no choice but to accept this reality.
The System was overjoyed. Finally, someone who could move things forward! It had been such a struggle.
“Uh… right now, because you drugged Pei Daowan—the female lead of this world—and she discovered it, I forcibly knocked you unconscious. You need to wake up quickly and take her to the hospital.”
Yu Jinzhao hadn’t thought much about it. Although her consciousness had been hazy, the woman’s voice had been a constant presence, filled with such venom that it repulsed her to her core.
As her awareness finally returned, Yu Jinzhao slowly rose from the floor. When her vision finally focused, she saw a woman kneeling beside the sofa.
Long, wavy dark brown hair cascaded down her back, and her silk pajamas were rumpled, as if she had been roughly handled.
Yu Jinzhao couldn’t see the woman’s face, only her back. She looked painfully thin; even through the fabric, her prominent shoulder blades were visible.
“Um… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…” Yu Jinzhao stammered, swaying as she stood. Instinctively, she wanted to drape her only coat over the woman’s shoulders. She looked so fragile.
Especially after hearing so much about the original owner’s actions from the System, Yu Jinzhao felt a surge of indignation. This woman, like herself, had been caught in the crossfire of senseless misfortune.
Perhaps out of shared suffering, Yu Jinzhao’s resistance to the “mission” began to soften.
It was fortunate the System couldn’t read Yu Jinzhao’s thoughts. Otherwise, it would have screamed in alarm. Had it exaggerated the original owner’s misdeeds too much, causing Yu Jinzhao to completely misinterpret the Host as a delicate, innocent flower?
Yu Jinzhao suddenly remembered that the female lead’s name was Pei Daowan and awkwardly began to speak.
“I’m so sorry. I promise nothing like that will ever happen again. Should we go to the hospital now?”
Yu Jinzhao hadn’t forgotten that it was the original owner of this body who had drugged Pei Daowan, rendering her defenseless and leaving her in this state. However, Pei Daowan was unaware that the soul inhabiting this body had changed, so Yu Jinzhao knew she needed to soothe Pei Daowan’s emotions.
“Pei Daowan! Pei Daowan!”
Yu Jinzhao called out cautiously, her voice soft and tentative.
To Pei Daowan’s ears, the voice sounded strangely different. It was the same voice as that scum, yet somehow it felt different coming from this person.
Seeing that Pei Daowan remained motionless and unresponsive, Yu Jinzhao grew anxious. The System had warned her that this was a prohibited drug—could something serious be happening?
Gathering her courage, Yu Jinzhao took a step forward, casually picking up a blanket from the sofa and gently draping it over Pei Daowan.
“I’m sorry, I need to take you to the hospital first.”
The System nearly went berserk at Yu Jinzhao’s actions. What is she doing?! it screamed internally. The Host already hates her enough! Why is she practically begging to die sooner?!
“Yu Jinzhao! Yu Jinzhao! What are you doing?! Get her to the hospital now!”
The System’s voice immediately flooded her mind.
Hiss!
Her head throbbed even harder, especially the back of her neck, which felt like it was about to explode. She had been forcing herself to endure the pain until now.
“I know! I know! But she’s dressed so lightly for this weather. It’s going to be freezing outside.”
The System paused, realizing she was right. Though spring had arrived, the nights were still quite cold.
After covering Pei Daowan with a blanket, Yu Jinzhao made no further advances. Instead, she pulled out her phone and dialed the emergency number. Thankfully, the emergency number in this world was identical to the one she knew from her previous life.
While Yu Jinzhao was on the phone, Pei Daowan finally turned slowly to face her.
Yu Jinzhao instinctively tried to offer a polite smile, hoping to salvage her earlier bad impression.
But the moment she saw Pei Daowan, her breath caught in her throat.
Pei Daowan’s hair was still disheveled, her delicate face glistening with a thin layer of sweat. Her exquisite, upturned eyes and brows, though currently lowered, hinted at the captivating charm they must possess when she smiled.
Yu Jinzhao’s heart burned with renewed contempt for the original owner of this body. What a scumbag! How could anyone treat her like this?
The dizziness intensified, causing Yu Jinzhao’s body to sway involuntarily.
The movement seemed to startle her. Her already lowered brows and eyes trembled slightly, and even her lips seemed to quiver.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”
Yu Jinzhao tried to speak further, but this time she couldn’t resist the overwhelming dizziness. She collapsed to the floor, completely losing consciousness.
Seeing Yu Jinzhao faint again, Pei Daowan disgustedly yanked the blanket off her and stood up, looking down at her from above.
Her demeanor had completely shed its earlier pitiful facade. No one would ever connect her with the vulnerable figure from moments ago.
“Host…”
The System finally spoke up, its voice timid under the pressure.
“I know. I won’t let her actually die,” Pei Daowan interrupted impatiently. Yu Jinzhao had lasted longer than she’d expected—truly a testament to the resilience of an Alpha’s body. The Creator was truly unfair.
Poor Yu Jinzhao still had no idea that the drug had been administered to her, not Pei Daowan. Otherwise, how could she have suffered such a splitting headache while Pei Daowan remained completely unaffected?
Soon, the urgent wail of an ambulance siren grew louder, approaching from the distance. As expected of the Yu Family—a medical team on standby 24/7, arriving so quickly!
Pei Daowan glanced at Yu Jinzhao, still unconscious on the floor. You should thank yourself for calling the emergency services, she thought. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bothered.
She casually tossed the blanket she had torn off herself over Yu Jinzhao and turned to leave. What happens next isn’t my concern, she thought. I’m more interested in seeing what Yu Jinzhao will be like when she wakes up.
The System held its breath, ensuring the paramedics would arrive promptly and Yu Jinzhao wouldn’t die. It hurried after Pei Daowan as she left the room.
Yu Jinzhao felt as though she were falling into an endless abyss. At first, she remained calm, having weathered many crises before. But as time passed without any sign of improvement, panic began to set in. Her body felt heavy, and a dull, aching numbness gripped the back of her neck. She tried to struggle, but even her fingers felt impossibly heavy.
No, I still have so much left to do, she thought. The acrid smell of disinfectant filled her nostrils, the faint sweetness she had briefly sensed earlier now gone.
After what felt like an eternity of struggling, Yu Jinzhao’s consciousness slowly returned. When she opened her eyes, she wasn’t met with the harsh glare of fluorescent lights she had expected, but with a warm, amber glow. Yet it took her pupils a long time to focus.
“Sir, Miss Yu is awake.”
The first person Yu Jinzhao clearly saw was a middle-aged man in a meticulously tailored dark gray suit. His refined appearance and commanding presence immediately marked him as a successful businessman.
But…
The term “Master” made Yu Jinzhao’s brow furrow slightly. What era is this? she wondered. How can people still use such archaic terms?
Seeing Yu Jinzhao awake, Yu Xincheng’s expression remained unchanged. He simply raised a white-gloved finger, signaling the people behind him to be silent.
Yu Jinzhao couldn’t make sense of the situation. She distinctly remembered calling emergency services for the female lead. How had she ended up in the hospital bed instead?
What about Pei Daowan?!
“How many times have I told you, Omegas shouldn’t be indulged. They only need to fulfill their duties properly. And you, a dignified Alpha, look at the state you’ve reduced yourself to. How utterly disgraceful!”
Yu Jinzhao’s frown deepened. What’s the difference between these words and the outdated notions in my old world that women should obey men?
Struggling to sit up, Yu Jinzhao wanted to confront this man. After all, lying down made her feel too vulnerable.
The butler, seeing Yu Jinzhao about to rise, quickly intervened, “Miss, don’t be stubborn. The master is only looking out for you. That Omega is fortunate to have you, let alone the Yu Family. You don’t need to be so polite to her.”
Yu Jinzhao froze. So this was Yu Xincheng, the “good father” the System had warned her about—a pompous, arrogant Alpha who knew nothing of respect. The original owner’s heinous deeds were inextricably linked to the man before her.
Pushing aside the butler’s arm, Yu Jinzhao straightened her posture, her voice weak but firm. “She’s not just an Omega. She has a name: Pei Daowan.”
Throughout their exchange, Yu Xincheng had maintained an impassive expression. But at Yu Jinzhao’s words, a faint twitch crossed his face before he quickly regained his composure.
I never imagined my precious daughter would dare defy me for an Omega, he thought. Does she think marriage has given her leverage? With the Pei Family’s backing, she dares to challenge me now?
The door was ajar, not fully closed, so Pei Daowan heard every word clearly from outside.
Just as Yu Jinzhao was about to retort, a knock interrupted them. All eyes turned toward the sound, and Pei Daowan stood in the doorway.
